The money I received from Northeastern ($15,000 per year for four years) was DEFINITELY merit based and not need based. Prior to applying early decision, I contacted several admissions officers who said that early decision applicants were still eligible for receiving merit scholarships. This money was absolutely not financial aid. I did not receive any financial aid. It was a Dean’s Scholarship.
Quoted directly from my acceptance: “The Dean’s Scholarship has been awarded to you in recognition of your outstanding academic achievement in high school and reflects our expectation of superior performance at Northeastern.”
@HRSMom is correct in what she has been saying.
I see a lot of you describing your teacher/counselor recommendations as ‘strong’. Out of curiosity, how do you know they’re strong? Just based on the assumed skill level of the teacher or did they let you read them?
I don’t know who started this idea that Northeastern doesn’t give merit aid to ED but it is not true. The same standards for merit aid applies to ED, EA and Scholars. Last year a couple of ED acceptees posted that they had received Scholars and their stats and profile were outstanding. Dean’s scholarships generally go to the top 25% of admitted students. Merit aid rewards meritorious performance and is not a “bribe” to attend.
Well said @TomSrOfBoston thank you!
@kunyi98 what race/ethnicity are you? and where are you from (i.e. state/country)?
On the topic of a potential incongruity between honors and merit scholarships: I believe that they are determined separately, so whoever is reading the applications for each may have different things that they’re looking for, and there’s also always chance involved.
I found out what a css profile was today and I applied EA. Is that going to be a problem regarding admissions?
@TomSrOfBoston Do you recall the various merit amounts given? We have one acceptance on the thread now with $15/yr so far.
@nishaus admissions, no…but financial aid, possibly. unless you are full-pay then i strongly suggest you contact northeastern asap to sort that out, because if you don’t soon and you get accepted you may get very little to no aid.
@nishaus it just means that you will not get a tentative aid award along with your admissions decision because you needed to have submitted the CSS by 12/1 for them to have time to process a tentative award. It doesn’t mean you won’t get financial aid if you are admitted and eligible. It’s a timing thing with respect to when you will know what that aid is or is not. http://www.northeastern.edu/financialaid/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/EA-FA-Checklist_NU-Logo.pdf
Thank you @halflokum and @17anddreaming !!! I was so afraid I screwed up really badly.
For those already accepted through ED, how do you know that you have been awarded merit based scholarships?
@kevinkimmy14 It tells you when you check your decision, I checked on my phone and there was a financial aid tab. I was given 40k/year in grants/scholarships which was due to “a combination of demonstrated need and merit achievements.” it said. So it doesn’t spell it out entirely for you; I just know that it’s more merit than need because my family can afford more than the EFC they determined, so I think you just kinda have to figure it out based on what they tell you.
@kevinkimmy14 There were two separate tabs. One was labeled “Scholarships.” Under this tab, it said I received the Dean’s Scholarship for merit. Another tab was labeled “Financial Aid.” Under this tab, it said I received no financial aid. The two tabs were distinguished
