@hrsmom I believe that the merit awards were in the $15,000-$20,000 range.
My son received something called a “Northeastern Achievement Award” which seems to be different than the Scholars award mentioned in other responses. It begins in sophomore year and the letter indicated it was to recognize “upper class students who demonstrate high-level academic performance and leadership at the university level.” We were not applying for financial aid so does upper class refer to that?? I thought it was strange wording but not looking a gift horse in the mouth! My guess is that it is meant to help keep him there after freshman year if they are worried about him transferring.
Regarding my earlier comment about “strong” recommendations…while we certainly were not shown the recommendations from my son’s teachers, our school college advisor told us that she read them and that they wrote great things! It’s a small private school so his teachers have had him in their classes for several years and really know him well. She also said that she wrote a glowing letter so…while we won’t know for sure, it seemed very positive.
@proudnumom I believe “upperclass” refers to sophomore year and later.
Hey guys, I was accepted to the NUin program and I feel uncomfortable posting my stats but I just wanted to say this:
I was so nervous about my low GPA (considering how selective NU has gotten)… its about a 3.5 W, so I’m mainly posting this for the people applying that may be in the same situation: have confidence! Numbers don’t define you, but work hard to show that they truly are an invalid representation of you now!
Good luck to every EA and RD!
Can someone explain the NUin program a little more for me please?
The current NU In student who started this thread below should be able to help you:

My son is currently in the NUin program and has had the experience of a lifetime. Basically, you study abroad for your first semester and then will begin at Northeastern in Boston in January. The sites include Greece, London, Canada, Ireland and Australia though your choice may be limited based on your major. My son is studying in Greece as an engineering major. He has taken a full schedule of classes while making new friends and experiencing a new culture. He said the transition was very easy. In addition, he has travelled with his friends to Amsterdam, Paris, Brussels, Rome & Florence.
I know some people are disappointed with NUin as an acceptance decision but you definitely should not be! The NUin kids are still Northeastern students and it is not much different than going abroad as an upperclassman or off campus for a co-op. My son says he feels so incredibly lucky to have had this opportunity and would not change it for anything. Given the choice, he would absolutely do it again!
If I can answer any specific questions please let me know. Congratulations & good luck!
Hi guys, I applied EA to Northeastern and just received a call for them thanking me for my application and saying that they were excited to review my application and impressed by my accomplishments. Does this mean anything in relation to scholarships?
How competitive of a major is International Affairs in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities in regards to the application process? I know some majors like business are more difficult to get into than say (supposedly) nursing.
@graceann I’m not sure if that pertains to scholarships but is definitely a good sign!
@Bostonian378 - the official line is that major doesn’t affect your probability of acceptance, but here’s my interpretation: the major you stand the best chance to get accepted to is one that you’ve prepared for and are passionate about. It will show in your application. Some majors have a reputation of being harder to get into, like international business, pharmacy, and engineering, but this evidence is all anecdotal and speculative since NU doesn’t break down acceptance rates. Plus, there are surprises - apparently behavioral neuroscience currently has the highest average GPA for incoming students. (I don’t remember where that stat come from, though.) Your proposed major doesn’t have any reputation like that, and even if it did, I wouldn’t worry about it.
@nanotechnology Thanks for the insight!
Hi graceann. My son applied ED and he got the same call about 2 weeks ago. We really didn’t know what to make of it…but he did get accepted (yay!) so maybe you should take it as a good sign. Good luck!
Based on last year, is it likely that EA will come out next Tuesday?
@graceann I received a call too! I hope it means good things
Hey guys! I also applied to Northeastern. I just had a quick question about admission. My older sister went to NU for her freshman year and then transferred out after. Do you guys think that that will affect how the admission officers view my application?
No, neither way.
This call from Northeastern before acceptance is something new this year I believe. It may be Northeastern’s version of a likely letter!
ED decisions were released as expected last Tuesday, which was similar to last year. In that case EA decisions should be coming out this coming Tuesday.
Note the “should”, not the “will”.
