Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 2320 (780 M, 780 W, 760 CW)
[] SAT IIs: (760 Math II, 760 World History, 720 Physics)
[] GPA: N/A (the Israeli system is different, I have a 90/100 average, or 109/111 weighted.)
[] AP: N/A (no APs in Israel)
[] Rank: Doesn’t rank, principal wrote I was in the 90th percentile (top 10%)
[] Other stats: Took a rather insane courseload by Israeli standards. The minimum to graduate is 21 units (where 5 units is considered a major and equivalent to AP level); the national average is 27; I took 51.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[li] Essays: Well, I liked them…[/li]Main one was a personal experience that was just happy. “Extracurriculars” was very strong, and “Why Columbia” I think went way beyond the “NY, Core, Great University” and really detailed something I was genuinely passionate about available only at Columbia. Short answers were fun.

[li] ECs: Three main things that stood out:
[/li]

I wrote three articles for the Jerusalem post in 2005, 2007 and 2008, one specifically defending Columbia (and its decision to host Mahmoud Ahmadinejad) and another about the Millennium Villages project which is connected to Columbia’s Earth Institute (also central to the “Why Columbia” essay). Plus two articles for the Jpost’s local affairs magazine, Metro (one cover article and a small puff piece)

I completed a senior thesis in high school titled Genocide in the 20th Century which earned the national Zalman Shazar award for outstanding senior theses.

I attended two college courses at Haifa University during my senior year and got high grades (94, 97) on the tests.

Apart from that, I’ve been playing the flute since I was 15, participated in a debate workshop during 10th grade (essentially the only extracurricular activity provided by the very low-budget school) and volunteered at a school for the past two years during military service.

One of the major staples of the essays and ECs was the fact that I know Arabic and am very interested in Arabic, the Middle East and Islam.

[] Teacher Recs: Pretty glowing, especially that of my English teacher.
[] Counselor Rec: Didn’t see it, but he’s an amazing person and a Columbia alumnus. He also agreed to write how enthusiastic I was about Columbia above all other universities.
[] Additional Rec: the Rabbi of my pre-army religious program.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Israel
[] School Type: Semi-private, religious
[] Ethnicity: White, Jewish
[li] Gender: Male[/li][/ul]

Reflection:[ul]
[] Strengths: SATs, Arabic-Islam-Middle East, “Why Columbia” essay, Jpost articles, senior thesis, university courses taken during senior year
[] Weaknesses: almost total lack of typical, school-based extracurriculars, an unimpressive GPA if converted out of context from the Israeli score, common major (Economics)
[li] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: MIT (accepted), University of Chicago (accepted), NYU (accepted), Penn (rejected), Princeton (rejected), Harvard (accepted).
[/li]

[/ul]
