@historygal19 - thanks for posting the questions! glad to hear your interview went well. I am from NJ too and not expecting to be interviewed. I submitted my interview on nov. 4th and haven’t heard anything yet. my guidance counselor also said that I shouldn’t expect to be interviewed because I live so close to nyc that any questions about columbia that I have could easily be answered through a visit (which I have done, more times than I can count). I’m not sure if he’s right, but I don’t really have a preference as to whether I want to be interviewed or not.

Has anyone else gotten interviewed yet? In person or by phone?

@sallylush, wow that would have been totally unexpected. It’s odd for me too that Harvard got u an interview even before ur app submission. I never heard of such incidence. Well at least that can never be a negative sign, it should have been a positive sign.

Yeah when my guy called me I had a mini panic attack but it ended up going very well. The fact that my first college interview ever was with Harvard also added to the stress. My advice to all interviewees are just relax and be honest! They’re not out to stump you with some crazy psychoanalysis. Research the college well, and be prepared to ask your interviewer some thoughtful questions! Dressing nice helps too.

Well looks like I spoke too soon: got an email earlier today for an interview!! I’m excited but a little nervous now too because this one actually counts. Weird thing is they’re making me go down to New York City because apparently that’s the closest alumni to me… It’s a 90-minute train ride which isn’t bad but it would have been nicer if it were closer to me.

Good luck on the interview! For me I think it will be either interview in very near location or no interview since I’m living in Vancouver Island. Post how ur interview went!

I’m having my interview done over Skype. I’m not sure if that’s better or worse. I thought the policy was always with an alum in your high school locale.

Had my interview today…some tips: go in there semi-prepared but not fully prepared because the quesitons the alumni asked were completely different to common ones i looked up. She was really nice as well so just think of it as one component to your application; relax, smile, have fun- I found I was actually enjoying it after a while because it was like having a conversation

@sparky9 what questions did she ask you specifically do you remember? Anything that pertains specifically to your supplement/application? Do they have access to your application and what you wrote on it?

@sparky9, according to historygal19’s post, the alumni interviewer has an ‘Official sheet’ which means most questions should be at least similar. Can you share some questions so that we can compare to the ‘official sheet’?

Yaybrown, that’s when I’m getting interviewed too! not nervous, but excited. Sure, the interview will have little if anything to do with the decision… but considering how gung ho I am for Columbia, I’m hopeful my interviewer will at least see something in me worth reporting!

I agree that the interview only has a little impact on the decision, especially since there is no disadvantage for not having an interview. Because the interviewers are alumni interviewers, not professionals, I think lot of them would be casual and informal. I guess lot of them would give positive report to Columbia admission office in general. Anyway, good luck! no pressure

My interviewer basically asked the questions listed on the previous page… Some were worded slightly differently. She also asked what drives me and how my extracurriculars have impacted my academic life.

@sallylush, good luck on your interview!! I wish you all the best Now that I’m seeing everyone elses posts I’m starting to wish my interviewer had been different! He kept mostly to the sheet because I was his first interview ever, although I tried to make it more like a conversation because, like @sallylush, I feel like I resonate sooooo much better with people than I do on paper. Also, congrats on the Harvard interview! I submitted my Harvard app yesterday lol so hopefully I get one as well… good luck to everyone else on interviews and hopefully they’re a tad bit more interesting than mine haha!

Submitted my ED app on Nov 1, got an email for an alumni interview today. (Out of curiosity, is that considered late to be having an interview for ED? It seems like a lot of people got theirs earlier).

We’re probably going to have it this Saturday. I’m really nervous and excited at the same time, as this will be my first interview… I wish I didn’t have to use my Columbia interview as my first test run, but oh well.
