OFFICIAL Common App '06 Thread

thanks filmxoxo :)

should the academic honors and additional information section be essays, or can they be lists (possibly with some brief explanations here and there)?

and for the academic honors section: by "scholastic distinctions or honors you have won," does that mean they must be awards, or can they be things such as selective internships?

would awards from vocational clubs, specifically DECA state and international awards qualify?
or is it much more of a straight-forward list such as ___ book award, NHS, NMS, etc.
if the second is the case, how long is this really expected to be? i would assume not long but I am a little intimidated by the 6000 character limit

RBase07: Sorry about that. Put what it says on your score sheet.

You're right. Cake does rock!

RBase07, The last sentence of that paragraph does not seem necessary. You dont need to say "It is worth mentioning." You acknowledge that simply by mentioning it! It's like the cliche needles to say. If it's needless to say, why say it?

BUMP Can anyone answer my other questions please?

rbase, your school wil already have mentioned that in the secondary school report, so you don't need to be as detailed as you are. just write a simple 'my school doesn't give awards'.

Theoretically, could one apply to every college that accepts the Common Application with little extra work (other than compounding extra fees)? Someone could easily complete the Common Application and send it to every college that accepts it, whether or not that person wanted to go there. I wonder if someone has ever done this...

what kinda idiot would do that haha
wouldnt it jsut be a waste of money and time

yeah, if it weren't for the $$, i'd prolly do something similar
:P

"rbase, your school wil already have mentioned that in the secondary school report, so you don't need to be as detailed as you are. just write a simple 'my school doesn't give awards'."

Are you SURE that one sentence will suffice?

let the questions begin...
1.) My father went to undergrad, med, dental, and master's school; the commonapp only has space for the first two--should i ignore this or mention the add'l education in add'l info?

2.) Re: Financial Aid Filing...i will apply, but what date do i put down? what date can i put down (ergo when does one apply- i heard u can only fill FAFSA in winter/spring of sr. year but maybe thats diff)?

3.) I'm a US permanent resident but i just applied for citizenship-- is this worth mentioning, or does it not figure into anything major?

4.) I have two counselors: our school provides one according to the alphabet (there are like five for the school), and one for the entire high school as a college counselor-- which do i put down, considering no one really gets to see the college counselor vs. the designated regular school counselor i see 4x a year?

5.) I've taken both the SAT and ACT, but should I submit both (neither is bad, but SAT is better)? Do I need to fill in both ACT test scores I've received, only one, or none?

6.) I read in Katherine Cohen's (famous admissions adviser's) book that you attach a brag sheet (extracurrics, service, summer experiences, honors, hobbies, employment listing) to your apps. The commonapp's extracurricular area is def not a brag sheet, so do i attach it to the supplement/commonapp? Are there different policies for attaching such resumes per school?

I think that's it for now.

Pretty tragic how summer's still going strong and I'm thinking about the coming fall/winter/spring...especially because I'm infamous for procrastination.

The crazy things you do to get accepted, huh? ;)

1) "mention the add'l education in add'l info?"

Do that.

2.) "Re: Financial Aid Filing...i will apply, but what date do i put down? what date can i put down (ergo when does one apply- i heard u can only fill FAFSA in winter/spring of sr. year but maybe thats diff)?"

The earliest date you can file the FAFSA is 01/01/06. Put that if that's what you intend to do (file as early as possible)

3.) "I'm a US permanent resident but i just applied for citizenship-- is this worth mentioning, or does it not figure into anything major?"

No clue

4.) You could either put what you just wrote in the additional info section, or just put the one you see the most and who actually does stuff for you, the "designated regular school counselor i see 4x a year"

5.) "I've taken both the SAT and ACT, but should I submit both (neither is bad, but SAT is better)? Do I need to fill in both ACT test scores I've received, only one, or none?"

no clue

6.) "I read in Katherine Cohen's (famous admissions adviser's) book that you attach a brag sheet (extracurrics, service, summer experiences, honors, hobbies, employment listing) to your apps.
Don't know

Hey guys. I'm glad I'm not alone with this common app. thing :0.

For the SAT II scores, should you be reporting ALL of your scores or only your highest in one in a given subject area?

Here's one. My mom went to the University of San Fransisco. It only fits University of San Frans or so. Should I shorted it to USF, or what?

Also, should I elaborate on each of my ECs in the "anything more" section? There's more to tell about almost every one.

Thanks RBase07

My mother and I are at loggerheads about my essay. I use a pretty extensive siren (the singing temptresses) metaphor leaning heavily on the Odyssey. I think it's literary. She thinks that it is male-dominating and establishing a patriarchal society. (We're both feminists, but I'm less intense than she is.) It makes her sick, but most of my writing makes her sick, including stuff that has won state and national awards.

I don't want my adcoms to be sick though. What do you guys think about sirens?

Michas: Do not put USF because that is also the abbreviation for the University of South Florida. If I were you, I would put something like Univ. of San Francisco.

I really really like how this common ap has almost NO public university (which is what I am applying to). Basically, I can apply to Cornell with this and thats the only university that accepts this app :(. SO MANY ESSAYS NOW :(

bump, still some questions that haven't been answered.
