Official Countdown to Move In Day 2016 Thread

@riceboy222 I’m still at Exeter.

I got a single in Lamont (as a Lower) and I’m pretty excited. One of the girls there reached out to me to answer any questions I had about the dorm. All the people I got to talk to from there have been crazily nice!

LOL @ how this turned into an Exeter thread, I swear I didn’t mean to

@junemaybees Lamont gets a bad rep for their facilities, but some of the nicest girls I have ever met in my entire life are in Lamont. You’re in good hands.

@AMS0203 Are the smaller houses kind of dilapidated compared to the big dorms?

@Center not really. There are multiple houses that are in a better state than some dorms, IMO. There are dorms and houses that are in desperate need of a renovation, as there are dorms and houses that are just fine. I will say though, the hallways tend to be smaller in a house, but that’s simply because of size and the fact that they are old, stereotypical NE homes.

@Center @AMS0203 I was admitted on August 5th as a new Lower for Exeter. I know that this is quite unusual. Do you know if new lowers are treated any different than other lowers in their same class? Is it hard to fit in as a new lower? In the context of dorm arrangement, I was also wondering if I had a good chance of being placed into a single. Finally, does anybody have any advice on how to adjust to the supposedly “intense” curriculum and life at Exeter?

P.S. I am a debater who specializes in Lincoln Douglas debate. Is there Lincoln Douglas at Exeter? I know that there is CX and parliamentary at Exeter, but I was wondering if there is an LD division.

@dmjkang_1 Whether you get a single or a double really depends on what dorm in which you get placed. Chances are, I’d say, that you’ll get a double, though. Most preps and new lowers tend to.

I’ll leave the other q’s for the other guys — a little tired and can’t really type much.

@AMS0203 Thanks!

@dmjkang_1 I was a new lower and I loved it!!! For the first few weeks, I would say maybe new lowers get their hand held a little bit rather than returning lowers, since it’s our first term there, and not theirs. Other than that, we’re treated the same. Regarding dorm assignments, it depends on what dorm you’re placed in. Soule is entirely made up of doubles, and if you’re in a house there’s a chance you’ll get a double. I was fortunate because my dorm is traditionally all singles (with the exception of emergency doubles for preps). As for the “intense” curriculum- Exeter will ease you into it, but after those first two/three weeks your workload will get larger. There’s always help if you need it, be it with time management or homework, but you have to ask for it- it will not come to you without you speaking up. Hope that helps!

It seems many schools have started or are starting next week. How did you spend the last two weeks?

D is excited about her school starting in a few weeks. She has lots of packing and stuffs to do. But she is also worried about possible math placement test, failing it, and being rescinded of her already registered Fall courses that require Algebra II.:slight_smile: Did you binge reviewed your math?

She also has a lot of episodes for her favorite TV shows to finish up before the school starts. Thankfully the school policy says it doesn’t allow using school wi-fi for streaming for entertainment.

@SculptorDad since I’m starting upper (junior) year, a really tough year at Exeter, I’m basically enjoying the last few weeks of freedom :). Trying to get all of the “couch potato” out of me so that when I’m back at school, it’s out of my system until the next break. As for your daugther, tell her she’ll be fine. Unless she hates math (nothing wrong with that) and bombs the test, worst case scenario is she drops down. Better than her placing into a class she can’t handle.

@SculptorDad And even if she drops down a class, the teachers will notice if she’s really ahead of the class and grasps the material fully. Don’t worry about it… they’ll talk to her if she’s clearly not in the level she’s supposed to be in.

@collegeisalright Thanks!

bye guys

u guys excited for move-in day?!?! :wink:
