GPA: 3.4-ish - toughest curriculum at an insanely competitive private school that doesn't rank (or calculate GPA, for that matter). Someone gets a 4.0 every few years, but it's tough. Half the class is National Merit commended or above. He is a semifinalist.

No APs offered because everything is taught at that level. He took a few AP exams and did well.

Low key ec's, but good depth: filmmaking, band, soccer, knowledge bowl, research and web development for political campaigns and nonprofits. Started his own web development biz and worked as a soccer ref.

Observations: He loves Dartmouth's film program, which we hoped might be a good niche for the application. He was testing the theory that Dartmouth is more test-oriented than other top schools, and apparently the test failed! In years past, kids with similar grades at his school have gotten in. I can't think of anything other than grades that would have caused an outright denial, although being white upper middle class probably didn't help him at all. He'll apply to some other New England LACs and a few larger schools out west. Maybe he'll end up at USC's film school, which is more selective than Harvard :)

I'll miss all you kids - it's been fun talking to you on this board! Congrats to those of you who got in, and good luck in the RD round for the deferred's.

Make that 1 denied: Rainmama's son. He probably wouldn't love having me spill a lot of ink over it, so here's the short version.

Sorry RainMama. I can't believe that he got denied and not deferred. I guess your son and I are opposites. He had amazing SAT scores 2350 and lower gpa 3.4. I have terrible SAT scores 1940 and decent gpa 3.9. I feel his pain and wish him good luck at USC and Harvard. That is a shock to hear someone with such incredible stats getting denied.

I'd be willing to host an EDer or two during Dimensions if anyone would like to visit then. Definitely come if you can make it; it's really a great experience, and the people I met there (including morangotango and estebancito from CC, as well as my boyfriend of three months) are still some of my closest friends.

the reason you super smart people didn't get in is because you are not real people, you just study all the time and have no personality. Everyone i know at Dartmouth is smart and has a personality, an interesting quality about them. Its not about stats. Stats only get you in the door, and these stats don't have to be 2400/36/4.0. Its about showing that you can contribute to the community more than just getting a 4.0 sitting in your dorm.
Sorry
