I'd be willing to host an EDer or two during Dimensions if anyone would like to visit then. Definitely come if you can make it; it's really a great experience, and the people I met there (including morangotango and estebancito from CC, as well as my boyfriend of three months) are still some of my closest friends.

Got my ED acceptance! Can you explain Dimensions a little more for me?

congrats to everyone who got accepted!!!
from,
the Cornell board

Dimensions was actually an RD-only event last year, IIRC. I don't think there'd be anything standing in your way from visiting during Dimensions, though - just that you probably wouldn't be included in their programming, since the whole point of Dimensions is to get undecided RD admits to attend.

No, John, ED-ers were absolutely welcome, and included in everything; they just had to find their own accomodations.

Ah, I probably misremembered some EDers' comments from earlier this year - someone was asking about Dimensions and I thought I remembered him/her saying something about being an ED admit and being unable to attend.

deferred post stats later

To those who weren't accepted, I know it is hard - but you really do end up in the right school for you. I have 2 sons - the oldest was rejected at D and the youngest was accepted. Even though the oldest was sad at the time, things worked out great for him- he completed his u-grad in 2 years and went straight into med school. Interestingly, D kept his information on file because when it would have been time for him to to apply to med school had he stuck to a 4 year u-grad plan - D sent him info about their medical school referencing the interest he had showed as a high-schooler. I don't know why he was rejected and my other son accepted - but can promise anyone who is down right now- things work out and you'll all have multiple acceptances in the spring at top schools.

My daughter just found out she was deferred. We're sort of in shock. She had 3.8 GPA from a tough private school; Nat'l Merit Scholoar; 800 in math, 750 in verbal. What more do they want?
From reading the letter she got, it sounds as if very few deferred applicants get in. Thoughts?

AmyBeth, they're looking to form an entire class; it's not just about scores and grades. Once you've got scores and grades to get in the pool -- and I'd imagine just about all deferred applicants do -- then they're looking for unique factors to make the class -- dancers, poets, linguists, mathematicians, football players, and so forth.

This will pass -- not quickly enough, I know; but it will work out for her. She will wind up at a fantastic school (maybe even Dartmouth!!) and love it.

*Decision: ACCEPTED!!!!! *

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Teachers loved them. A large part of why I got in I bet. One a narrative about fishing with my dad that was personal and philisophical. The other about the moment I became inspired to become involved in Key Club.
[] Teacher Recs: Amazing "Brilliant" "Best in 33 years of teaching" and other kind things. Peer rec was from my best friend; it was serious, but very enlightening. I also had a recommendation from the doctor I did medical research with. These recs were a major reason why I got in, I bet!
[] Counselor Rec: Wonderful, explained my schedule and motivation.
[] Interview: It went well. We talked for about an hour at a cafe.
[] Major EC's: NHS President, Key Club Vice-President, Medical Explorers-President, Choir- Activities Director, Varsity, and Most Improved award, Musical Theatre, Cross Country-Varsity, Track
Total Hours of Community Service around 700+ hours and a couple thousand hours with my other EC's
[] Work experience: Medical research internship at Oregon Health and Sciences University
[] Hook (if any): None that I know of. My strange ethnicity combo or being well-rounded...maybe? Psshh! Who cares!?
[] Notable weaknesses (if any): I did not take the most rigorous courseload available to me, but I took what I was interested in, and I think that was evident in my app.

[] State or Country: Oregon
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Korean/Chinese/White/Jewish
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: $120,000
[] Financial aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: Unsure
[li] Other schools in mind: Dartmouth was my number one choice! That's why I applied early! If I was rejected...Princeton, Brown, Yale, Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, Middlebury, Wesleyan, and a bunch of other LACs.
[/li]

[/ul]Other Factors: I think I was able to flesh out my app, and present myself as a real human being rather than some distant applicant.

General Comments: I am still in shock. I probably looked like a fool running around the school to tell my teachers and, at the same time, interupting their classes, but they didn't care. I am so excited to meet you all! Congratulations to everyone who got in, and if you were not accepted, there are plenty of other amazing schools out available to you. Someone should start a facebook group (I'm not very tech savvy.) so the 12's can get to know eachother, which means I should start an account. I am so excited!!!!!! Hail Dartmouth!!! Cheers!

Arrowsmith: You sound fantastic! Congratulations! Revel in this feeling!

there already is a facebook group.... Dartmouth Class of 2012! (: congrats!!!

I Got In!!!!!!!!!!!

5/400
lots of aps on toughest course load

i thought my essay was really good, recs were pretty great--counselor's was weak but only because i had never talked to her more than once in 4 years.

i didn't get an interview which is a bit interesting.

white male from small-ish town minnesota, public school, $120,000 or so- major listed as econ

ec's: soccer for 6 years, all state tuba player, chair of prom and homecoming committees, pres of a big tailgating club we have every year at my school, nhs, big brothers/big sisters volunteering yadda yadda
no idea on the peer rec.. i didnt want to read it
quite a bit of work experience
no hook really

weakness..? i guess they found something... i did get 2 A minuses first half of junior year so i'm kind of hoping that the deferral was just to make sure i wasnt going downhill or something. thats what i like to tell myself anyway.. any opinions on that? i'm not gonna lie, i thought i had a decent shot and this is a bit disappointing but whatever.... i have essays to write :S

edit::added satII's

Some of these results are quite frightening. I don't remember this many high quality applicants being outright rejected last year.

01jttma... amazing, only 2 A-'s? I got two B+'s...

And I had a 6.3 on a seven-point scale, and that included one or two 5+s. You do need good grades, but not necessarily perfect ones.
