[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Questbridge Finalist, regional medals in Science Olympiad, National AP Scholar, National Merit Commended

[] Volunteer/Community service: Private tutoring in various subjects (~100 hours), Hospital volunteering (~200 hours)
[] Summer Activities: Class at UCLA.
[] Essays: About my transition from an ultra-competitive, cut-throat student to who one is more willing to help others succeed as well. Thought it was good but maybe not.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Probably good but nothing more.
[] Counselor Rec: Most likely generic. He did seem enthusiastic about writing it though.
[] Additional Rec: None.
[li] Interview: Was not offered one.
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] School Type: Public (~2,500 kids)
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: Low enough to be a Questbridge Finalist.
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Questbridge Finalist, so I forwarded my Questbridge application to them.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: SAT scores, status as a Questbridge Finalist, AP scores.
[] Weaknesses: Weak extracurricular involvement, no significant awards.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I should have been more involved. For all schools, including Dartmouth, my essays probably weren’t as developed as I initially thought. There were a number of things going on in my life emotionally, many of which I wouldn’t have been able to explain to the admissions officers, so I really procrastinated on them and lacked the willpower to revise them.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

Accepted: Williams (Early Write), UC Berkeley (Regents Candidate), UCLA (Regents Candidate), UCSD (Regents Scholar), UCI (Regent Scholar + Campuswide Honors Program), Boston College (A&S Honors Program)
Waitlisted: Dartmouth
Rejected: Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, Duke, University of Pennsylvania, Columbia

[/ul]General Comments: I know I shouldn’t take any of the Ivy Leagues, Duke, or Stanford for granted, but I thought I’d get into at least one of them, especially with Questbridge as a hook. With my college results, I’m baffled that I managed to get an early write to Williams. I will be staying on the waiting list, and hopefully, with the information I failed to provide when I initially submitted my application, the admissions officer will admit me. Advice to future applicants: Don’t focus solely on scores and grades. Those will only get you considered. If you really want to go to a highly selective school, you better go above and beyond in with your extracurriculars or win impressive awards. I learned this the hard way. I know for a fact that I had the highest scores at my school, but due to my lack of extracurricular participation, I failed to get into the schools I wanted, while others did.

[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to Rutgers, Boston College, William and Mary, and Cornell, Waitlisted at UVA and Penn, Rejected from HYPCBD and Hopkins
[/ul]General Comments:
I got rejected after being deferred ED. Honestly, I was pretty mad and upset about this one… Wish they could have rejected me from the beginning instead of stringing me along. It’s pretty cruel, actually, and I even sent a letter of why it was still my #1 and an additional rec. Whatever, I’m heading off to William and Mary or Cornell. Good luck to the rest of you!

@I3auer @monkeydudexD you guys both sound so qualified! sorry about Dartmouth, but Im sure you will do great wherever you go. MonkeydudexD, I know how you feel I got deferred and then rejected at Princeton, but I wasn’t surprised at least. I3auer, I heard that the ivies have a conference where they send names through a database, and those who applied to 3 or more are actually less likely to get into any. Of course I have no idea if this is actually true, but I also know our salutatorian from last year applied to 8 ivies and didn’t get into a single one even with perfect SAT scores and tons of extracurriculars. Idk either way, you guys will do great somewhere else. there’s always Grad school if you’re still interested 4 years from now.

My friend got in, probably the first from our school to get into Dartmouth but he says he’s turning it down for University of Delaware Chem Engineering… he had 2120 on the SAT, and a rank of 18/202, and mixed URM (African-American/Caucasian).

Decision: Accepted

[] Summer Activities: See above volunteering. Went to Summer@Brown, discovered that Brown, in fact, was not my dream school, also discovered that philosophy (my class was called Skepticism) was hella cool.
[] Essays: Pretty good-- my writing generally seems quirky and emotional to others
[] Teacher Recommendation: Both very glowing, though perhaps not too unique-- one is cross-country coach, other is AP and Honors chemistry teacher.
[] Counselor Rec: Do not know her, not very confident in her writing abilities, but I assume it was okay.
[] Additional Rec: Awkward… I actually did not discover the peer recommendation until after deadlines. Oops.
[] Interview: Conducted after likely letter, so it was a lovely, relaxed discussion of 1970’s Dartmouth and its political environment.

Waitlisted: MIT, Princeton

[/ul]General Comments: Congratulations to everyone for making it through this process, and to the amazing schools you have gotten into. If you didn’t get in to your top school, don’t beat yourself up over it. As everyone else will tell you, this process can be very unpredictable and those who get in do not always know why. You will succeed anywhere you go if you take advantage of all the opportunities provided. To those who will be applying in the future: don’t obsess over one school and don’t stress out about this entire process more than you have to (I did a bit too much). Work hard on your applications, don’t leave them to the last minute and once those applications are out of your hands, let the chips fall where they may.

I’m doing this because I promised myself I would. I don’t feel like bragging or boasting at all, but these threads helped me a lot in my time and I feel like I owe something to the CC community.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Objective stats.
[] Weaknesses: Extracurricular activities, lack of awards.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: A combination of my numbers and a story I explained in my letter of continued interest.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

Accepted: Williams (Early Write), UC Berkeley (Regents Candidate), UCLA (Regents Candidate), UCSD (Regents Scholar), UCI (Regent Scholar + Campuswide Honors Program), Boston College (A&S Honors Program)
Rejected: Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, Duke, University of Pennsylvania, Columbia

[/ul]General Comments: After being waitlisted, I wrote a nearly two-page long letter to the admissions committee explaining an extenuating circumstance that I believed affected me during the application process, in addition to informing them of new achievements and activities. I felt like Williams College wasn’t the place for me, but I was ready to accept the fact that that was the place I would be attending fall. Thankfully, I have another option now. I’m leaning towards Dartmouth at the moment, but I have until June 4 to make a decision.

Hello folks, I was just wondering, what is a “likely letter?” Is it for ED applicants who get deferred, or regular admission applicants?

I can’t see the point in sending a likely letter to a deferred ED, since its intent to lock in desirable regular admission applicants. It says (in so many words), “We want you. We will admit you when the regular date comes. If you had gone ED, you’d have an admit letter in your hands right now.” Okay, maybe the latter is a little bit strong.

**Decision: Accepted (w/ likely) **

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2240 (710 CR, 790 M, 740 W)
[] ACT: 34 (35 E, 35 M, 34 R, 32 S)
[] SAT II: 800 World History, 770 Chem, 770 Math II
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 2 of 500
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): 5 (Lit, Chem, USH)
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Psych, Calc AB, Physics, Language, Spanish
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): umm, QuestBridge?

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Several clubs, but I mostly focused on music: Marching Band (Drum Major), Concert Band (1st Chair), Orchestra, out-of-school bands, organized a large charity event.
[] Summer Activities: Band Camp, Drum Major Camp
[] Essays: One about band and how I’ve matured from it, the other about growing up and supporting my family.
[] Teacher Recommendation: AP Chem and USH teachers, didn’t read them
[] Counselor Rec: Loved me, didn’t read it
[] Interview: None, received my likely on January 29th

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Illinois
[] School Type: Very crappy public, never sends to Ivies
[] Ethnicity: Jordanian (marked Caucasian)
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: Under 40,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Low-income, gay catholic arab?

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Decent academics, strong personality shown in my essays
[] Weaknesses: Lack of awards or national recognition
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My unique life situation, and the fact that my teachers knew me very well.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to Harvard (attending), Dartmouth, Brown, Cornell, Amherst, Wesleyan, Vassar, University of Illinois. Wait-listed from Princeton, Columbia, Duke, and University of Pennsylvania. Rejected from Yale (EA).

[/ul]General Comments: Acceptances are a crap-shoot. Apply to as many as you can and just be honest in your application. Where you end up might not be where you thought, but everything works out for the best.
