General Comments/Congratulations/etc:
Wanted to get Honors, but I guess I’m not really qualified enough! I guess that’s life. Probably won’t go because I can’t afford it but… hey. Definitely one of my top choices and probably would attend if I had in-state tuition. Nevertheless, very excited!

It upsets me that people with lower GPAs, no APs, and lower SAT/ACT scores got in but I didn’t. Especially because I’m in state and they’re not. I thought this was supposed to improve chances, why are they being lowered?

I was waitlisted with a 3.4 GPA, universal studies, instate, 28 ACT, 4 honors, etc.

Wait, sike. I forgot. I didn’t submit my teacher recs / counselors recs since Tech doesn’t want them. I also applied as History major which could’ve been a minor hook & definitely easier than Engineering or Architecture.

I’m taking AP Environmental, AP English Lit, and AP Comparative Politics this year too.

I disagree, considering from what I’ve heard most years 0 applicants have been taken from the waitlist.

My GPA was unweighted. I went from a 3.0 freshman, 3.3 sophomore, 3.6 junior, and 4.0 senior so I felt as if the upward trend would help some. I also had some family issues that I really felt gave me a hook when I wrote about them in my essay, and great ECs. How come OOS can get in with such lower standards? Its ridiculously frustrating :

Also - Is there any idea on how many students are waitlisted each year? I feel like I’d have more of a chance if it was around 500 rather than something like 5,000.

Rick, I am a OOSer from CA. My family nor I have ever been to Virginia. I will have 11 APs and a honor here and there by the time I graduate. Maybe I just got lucky though I did get into schools with similar acceptance rate (UIUC and Purdue).

Hope this helps.

P.S. base on your stats, you should be in. File a appeal if VT is your first choice.

Yeah, I’ve been told i should file an appeal. Though it says online an appeal will only be reviewed if there was any info left off of the original app and that an appeal will not considered if i’m only looking for a second opinion.

[ b]FOR DEFEREES IF accepted, reasons why you think so, actions you took after being deferred, etc…: Got Straight A’s in first semester to bump my GPA up a good amount.[ /b]

Yeah, I am. I’m from the county that changed its grading scale, but not retroactively. And when I looked on the transcript it had the new scale listed, but no mention of the fact that previous grades weren’t changed. Plus the grades aren’t listed by number, only letters.

You might just possibly have a case then. Try to get your highschool to contact the school saying that the grades were reported incorrectly. It’s very important that you stress that something was incorrect on the transcript/application.
