I am honestly surprised there isn't a thread on this already. Last year's was huge and it started in November! Anyway my fellow transfers, let's get some discussion going. I'll start off.

Application Basics:

Letters of Recommendation: 1 from college professor, 1 from PI, 1 from H.S. instructor (all excellent)

Other:
Other schools applied to: None
Comments: I think my essays will have to pull me through. I'm really only wanting to transfer to Cornell because of the BSoc Major, since my school doesn't have anything close to it, and because of specific research labs that I am interested in. If I don't get in I won't be devastated, but it would be nice for my future career goals to get into Cornell. All pre-requisites are complete/in progress.

I submitted my application in January and all materials have been sent out; I already have my applicant ID and I can see some things checked off.

So who else is joining me on this journey?! Please post comments/stats/insight/advice so we can all benefit from it. And I suppose this can be the transfer chance thread as well.

yeah hoping it works out, have spoken to some people @ HumEc and got the impression that as long as I don’t blow the essays I should be a strong candidate…love the PAM major but fear the Cornell weather. Are you a pre-med?

Yeah your numbers are strong. The only thing I really worry about is HS GPA, but I hope they look past it for us. And I mean come on, I think you can handle the weather if you’ve gone through military training. man up!

Trying to finish my essays up this week. As far as pre-med I was chatting with a HumEc dean on the phone and he told me the committee letter requires 30 credits at Cornell before they’ll write us one. If admitted be sure to touch base w/them immediately and let them know you’re a new transfer and will need the letter for summer med school applications. The moment spring grades hit they can issue one.

Hey guys, good looking stats everyone.
Me:
Applied: ILR
Entering as: Junior
HS GPA: 2.9 (I barely attended HS!)
College GPA: 3.95
Degree: Associates Science (Graduate May 2013 from a CC)
EC’s: I’m a mom of two (one disabled) and work full-time so basically sleeping.
Letters of Recommendation: 1 from college professor

I’m non-traditional; been out of HS for 8 years and am a supervisor for a shipping company.

I’ve applied to Cornell (waiting) and Rutgers (admitted).

Oh wow thank you for the great advice yolo.

Looks like I have my work cut out for me if I get admitted. MCAT + Adjusting to Cornell will be tough…but just gimme the chance fingers crossed

And yeah I think its good to submit the application early; it probably shows interest and organization, and they will read your application before the others (aka the rush of apps that are submitted on the deadline). I’ve read somewhere that they begin review for apps on Feb. 15th (but I dont know where I saw that…).

Also as for “showing interest”, people say that visiting the campus helps. I have visited Cornell like multiple times (for friends mainly), and I mentioned it in my essays…but is there a way to officially make them realize that you visited? Perhaps pay a visit to the admissions office? lol…

@Ftypeman: Much respect on you for taking care of kids AND working full time AND maintaining such a high GPA. Your life experience will be a great story to tell for admissions I am sure. And congratulations on getting admitted to RU! great school.

It’s interesting none of us are applying for to the same college. We’re not in direct competition with one another! Not sure if anyone is interesting in reading transfer essays but if you’re willing let me know and I’d love to get feedback. Also happy to do the same for anyone else.

True no direct competition, but for top schools there is always a quality set of applicants. Sure I’ll give yours a read, I have already submitted mine so don’t worry about plagiarism (which would be stupid, because that would ruin both of our apps). Just PM me.

I heard that Cornell uses rolling admission, so I submitted my application on Jan 30th, but still College transcript, recommendation, and college official form hasn’t arrived.
By the way, are you guys doing well on the current courses? I know that we need to send mid year reports and I’m very anxious about the grades. I’m also thinking of withdrawing on science course becase I understand a **** and going to take other 2nd half biology class that starts next week. I’m taking five courses right now and I have a feeling I feel get either two A’s and three B’s or three A’s and two B’s… I hope mid year report doesn’t ruin my application…

Yeah they do rolling “results” so its best to get your materials asap. I hope mine are there and they start reviewing it soon (obv I don’t have a midterm report, so I hope they review without it).

I think it is your best interest to keep your grades as high as possible. As long as they don’t drift too far from your gpa I think you are ok, 3.5+ on midterm should be fine (unless you are border lining). But since midterm isn’t completely indicative of your final grades, it weights less but is def considered to push you over the edge I think; I am saying this because my friend applied last year to CAS as a transfer and they waited until my friend faxed over the midterm report and then told him that she was accepted a few days later. My friend had a B+ to A average on midterm.

looking to transfer from another ivy. had a bad first semester, but midterm grades should be 3.7+, so hopefully they’ll look at that and my HS stuff.

My Stats:
Current college: UC Irvine
College/ Major Applying to: CAS
Entering as: Sophomore
HS GPA: 3.6ish
College GPA: 3.55
SAT: 2160
SAT II: Math II: 760

courses: Calc (single and multivariable), Physics 1, Classical physics, Intro to CS (1,2), Discrete Mathematics, Writing 1… (will take Intro to CS 3, statistics, writing 2, and intro to databases for my last quarter)

Units completed (by end of the school year): 13
Units in progress (Spring 2013 courses) : 16
Extracurriculars: Founder of start-up (currently trying to receive funding), Undergraduate Business Association, Intern at a local software company, volunteered at an orphanage in Vietnam

Letters of Recommendation: 1 from Calc professor, (might ask another professor). He mentioned that I was in top 1% of the students he taught.

Other schools applied to: Georgia Tech, University of Texas, Austin
Comments: I’m a pretty weak applicant. If I don’t get in any of my schools, I’m considering dropping out and taking a gap year.
