Official Grinnell Class of 2018 - Admission Decisions

I congratulate everyone who has been offered an early write package with a lot of merit aid. My daughter is a freshman at Grinnell, and she is very happy there. She has lots of friends, and she has had (mostly) excellent professors. She has been challenged. Though she grew up in a city and was not sure she wanted to attend a college in a rural area of the midwest, she loves the town of Grinnell.

But my point in posting here today is to say that she did NOT receive an early write package despite the fact that it seemed to us that she had likely submitted a better application with higher grades and higher SAT scores than some of the students posting their statistics and the information that they had received early write packages. Nevertheless, she received a large merit aid package in late March. The wait was unpleasant and nearly turned my daughter off from Grinnell. I urge those people posting about early writes to remember that some applicants who did not receive early writes and might be equally deserving of merit aid are reading your posts. I also urge those who, like my daughter, have not received early write packages, to be patient, difficult as it might be. It would have been better if Grinnell had made all merit offers at the same time.

Maybe the hold off until they receive your Mid-Year Report. Some schools don’t release them until the end of February.

I received my acceptance letter on Monday and the Trustee Honor Scholarship. Congrats to all who received their letters as well. I wish more colleges would let us know early!

@Atalanta
I agree with you. It seems the schools send admissions and merit aid, based on their own reasoning which seems to vary from school to school. While we are glad that my D, got admission in such a nice school, there are hundreds of other deserving students who are still waiting for their results, We wish them the very best and hope they will get their admissions and possible merit aid soon.

I got my early write letter on Feb. 10th. I’m wondering how many people are actually going to the admitted student program in early March…

My son hasn’t decided if he will attend the early admit program yet. Grinnell is still on his list, but we visited in December, and it would be nice to visit again once the weather warms up a bit and maybe some of the snow has melted. He has spring break the last week of March, so that might be a better time to visit again- he will be hearing from his last 2 colleges that week and then it will be decision-making time.

I’m going to the March visit days! I haven’t visited Grinnell, or even been to Iowa. I’m excited that it’s an option for me with the aid I received.

Just curious, how much did everyone get in merit aid?

24k

The early write just applied to domestic US student I suppose so? Haven’t seen any international say something

I am a bit confused…the information posted here talks about a March weekend for admitted students…but the Grinnell website only has this posted:

“Every spring we host two Admitted Student Programs that allow you to explore the campus and student life. This year’s programs are April 6-7 and April 20-21.”

So is there a “secret” March weekend for admitted students that get an “early write” acceptance? I am very happy for all of you that received an early write acceptance, but it is very disconcerting to those students who have applied and did not get an early write letter, but instead are waiting until late March/early April for a decision.

I believe Grinnell has hosted the “early write” weekend for the past few years, as there are posts here on CC discussing it in previous years. It is understandable why Grinnell wouldn’t post the dates on the website, as they would be inundated with inquiries from applicants wondering why they weren’t invited, etc. I think Grinnell realizes that in order to yield some of their top applicants, they need to be aggressive and to act early before these students commit elsewhere- many top schools have similar unadvertised visit days for select students.

For those of you who were not included in the “early write” weekend, I understand the anxiety of having to wait another month for a decision . . . but be careful what you wish for:

The temperature forecast for the 2-day event is a high of 3 degrees and a low of ten below . . . with snow possible!

Does Grinnell do early writes for internationals?

My son also received his acceptance letter dated Feb 6 with the Trustee Honor Scholarship award.

Congrats! Would you mind sharing your son’s Stats and how much is the award for? Just rying to get a handle on what they look for to award this.

I don’t know about international students, but I received an early write. I am a US citizen and have lived abroad for the past ten years.

Could the happy CCers with acceptances and merit aid post their stats for 2015 hopefuls…thanks
