well, I did get a likely....:-/

my hook.. i'm an athlete... (and harvard is weak in my event..).. I'm an IB student.. with predicted 42 points (excluding the EE and TOK).. I'm also from Europe.. actually eastern Europe.. only one guy from my school went to harvard and he is doing great there.. how's that for a hook.. my only weakness are my low SATs and perhaps a lack of ECs...

hook... I'm chinese (yeah, i know there it TONS of chinese out there) , BUT I was born in South America, Argentina. I've got 5.0 and i came to the US 2 years ago (sophomore year). I'm fluent also in Spanish, Chinese and Japanese, and I can understand Taiwanese and some French... but I've got a low 1850 on my last SAT... i might take it again

Is that a good hook? :P

My hook? I'm not applying to Harvard

...

Or did I just blow your mind?

1 yes

I'm a special ed student!!!!!

I'm sorry, I don't understand :) I'm on the wait list, am I supposed to send them anything additional to try to get in?

My hook was being a legacy and going to a feeder school.

Am i considered a legacy if my Grandfather (by marriage) graduated from harvard business school? Hes not like a blood grandfather, but my dads moms second husband....i think....
oh, and are any of these hooks?
-brought up by low income single mom of 3
-live in rural ohio, go to very underfunded hs
-first generation college student (on my moms side)
-at the expense of sounding arrogant...i am quite talented in art and music. This year i had 3 peices of art chosen for the Ohio govs. youth art exhib. Top 300, which is the top competition in the state. about 14000 art works are entered, 300 are chosen. I had one work make it last year. Also a 6-year member of band, first chair, section leader, blah blah....

thanks guys
ryan

You are definitely not considered a legacy. Only parents who graduated from Harvard undergrad make you a legacy there.

Your low income status and art talent are good, but not necessarily hooks.

Are there any hooks that you can control?

well im not really positive that it was their grad business school, i'd have to ask him, he may have been an undergrad there also, not really sure. I just know that he has a doctorate and at some point in time attended harvard. I know that hes pretty active with alumni groups, he and my grandma went to south america and africa with an alumni groups just last year. He now owns a high-tech laser marking and printing/labelling company and was awarded the entrepreneur of the year in the state of ohio sometime in the 80s i think.
well, thanks for your help guys, i was just wondering, but i know my stats are nowhere near good enough to get in with all the hooks in the world.

thanks,
ryan

looking at other people hooks, i believe i had good hooks to but i got rejected from every Ivy.

Came to U.S three years ago, born in India. moved to about four different place before i settled in the first year. Started out at sheltered classes and E.S.L. didn't know about sports or anyting, did community service thoug, by the end of senior year should have about 700-800 hours of it. Junior year jumped from sheltered classes to A.P and did good. sat and AP exams were low 1710 and 3 bio,2 us history,2 English. played two sports, joined student govt. senior year tri sport athlete, took every AP offered in school. student govt., writing for school newspaper. rank 7th in class of 500+. All tis without any set path to follow, being in a low income/ new immigrant family and at one point dad had to go back and mom worked 16 hrs a day.

Are those hooks?????????????????
hopefully some one can tell me, because i just got rejected from all six of the ivies i applied to. and stanford.

also first generation in U.S parents went to college in India.

my weighted gpa is 4.1 and unweighted 3.9

I can fluenlty use 5 languages (Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese, Spanish & English) and I can understand Latin and French.
My gpa this last semester (junior year) is 5.0 , overall is 4.5. unweighted is 4.0.
What holds me down are: I dont have freshmen grade (I was in Argentina yet); my SAT score is really low (1850), which I will definitely retake; and the fact that I'm Chinese. I was born in Argentina and liver there until 2 years ago, but you know... there is tons of super brilliant asians, especially in California.... heh~ ^^

Hook:
Heard of someone that was a refugee from a war-torn country that came here (America) after his parents, one of which was an alcoholic, divorced. He and his family (minus alcoholic parent) lived as a low, low income family for a long time. He speaks two languages (English and home country’s language fluently and another conversationally). Told me he plans on using this as his supplemental essay and showing how a moment of reflection he had changed his outlook on life. What do you think?

Sadly, it’s just not really that unusual (think Bosnia). We have plenty of those kids around our area…and they’re all extremely bright, multi-lingual, etc.

Would be a Hook at some top 20’s, and maybe, but not necessarily, at Harvard.

True, but no matter how many people have the hook, it’s still a great hook. I mean there are a lot of people who face financial struggles and apply to Harvard and yet that hook doesn’t get old. I don’t know but at least for me, his hook is good enough, especially if you take into consideration that, while many “financial struggle” hooks are seen at Harvard, there are not too many refugee ones. I mean, how many refugees apply to Harvard?

Probably not an awful amount, but sympathy “hooks” don’t go as far in admissions as many people are inclined to believe they do, in my opinion.
