*Official Housing Questions Thread*

So what are the names of the all-freshman dorms? Do any of them have things like two-room triples, or are all of their rooms strictly one-room doubles?

hmm most are one room doubles but Roble has three room Quads.

Branner has two-room triples. Aside from Roble and Branner, all other dorms would likely have one-room doubles and very, very few singles (from 0-3 per dorm).

These dorms are upperclass only: Castano (public service focus), Lantana (humanities focus), Kimball (arts focus), Toyon (sophomores), Robinson, Potter, Suites (suite style), Mirrielees (apartment style), Arroyo (Symbolic Systems focus). All row houses are also upperclass-only.

These dorms are four-class: Okada (Asian theme), Soto, Trancos, Serra, Twain, Burbank, Casa Zapata (Latino theme), Cardenal (part SLE), Faisan (part SLE), Loro, Mirlo, Naranja, Ujamaa (African-American theme), Eucalipto, Granada, Adelfa, Roble.
All freshmen in Cardenal and Faisan are SLE.

These dorms are all-frosh: Branner, Cedro, Junipero, Otero, Rinconada, Donner, Larkin, Alondra (half SLE), Gavilan, Paloma.

FroSoCo is a special case--it's all freshmen and sophomores, as the name suggests. Also, I think as a frosh in Frosoco it's possible (though difficult) to get a two-room double.

how many of the dorms have ac?? how gross does it get in the ones that don't?

No dorms have AC as far as I know, but it's not really a problem. I think that for the greater part of the year, it's nice that we have a heater! Maybe I just have little cold tolerance ;) 60 degrees and I want it warmer. Some students will have little desk fans to keep them cool in September/October/May/June, but it's not that bad without it.

anyone know what it's like to live in Okada?

50% Asian folk. And several of the white males living there are known to possess the strange phenomenon called "yellow fever", i.e. obsessed with Asian girls. It's not particularly social, I hear. And the people I know living there aren't exactly fans. But I'm thinking they're exaggerating because they weren't able to get on the Row.

so I hear I can list dorms in order of preference?
for a frosh like me, how should I list them? any opinions? :D haha

so I hear I can list dorms in order of preference?

This is untrue. You can only list your preferences for TYPE of dorm, like all-frosh, 4-class, FroSoCo, ethnic theme dorm, etc. For the ethnic theme dorms, you can specify which one you would like.

^ahhh I see
hahaha I'm so new at this =_=
is it awkward to have coed floor? like do you guys have to share bathrooms or something?

Not awkward at all. Bathrooms and shower facilities are separate, so there's nothing weird about it. I've lived on a coed floor both years, and I think it's a lot more fun than single-sex floors.

Wow, I think my parents might freak though...(we're sort of conservative Chinese people)...so there are NO single-sex dorms?

The only single-sex dorm is Roth, which is an all-female row house and thus not open to freshmen (freshwomen?). There are dorms with single-sex floors, though. You can request them when you turn in the housing application.

Ah, yes, I left that out. As Sly Si said, you can also request the type of floor. I lived on an all-girls floor my freshman year and this year as well. I'd say it's significantly quieter than the co-ed floor, and I like this because I can sleep and study, but it's still very easy to walk to the boys' floor or to co-ed floor to hang out.

I'll be coming to stanford as a grad student (master's) this autumn. I don't know anything about the housing in stanford, so I was hoping someone could comment on the houses that I'm considering, and whether my choices look good (I basically just picked the cheapest ones). Here're my current choices:
1st choice: Crothers Memorial, Double Occupancy
2nd choice: Chi Theta Chi
3rd choice: Hammarskjold
4th choice: Escondido Village, 2 BR Triple Occupancy
5th choice: Escondido Village, 1 BR Double Occupancy
6th choice: Crothers Memorial, Single Occupancy
7th choice: Escondido Village, 2 BR Double Occupancy
8th choice: Rains Houses, 2 BR

I'm pretty social, only 21, and finished undergrad in 3 years, so I feel more like a senior undergrad than a grad student. I really don't wanna spend all my time hanging out with 25+ year old grad students; I'd prefer a more undergrad-like experience for my first year at least. I obviously prefer a place that is cheap and in a good location too. If anyone has any advise, I'd really appreciate it.

did anyone get the housing application packet yet?
i'm an international student so i was wondering if i was the only one who didn't hear about housing yet..
do u know when we can choose our housing??

Whacks, I'd recommend Chi Theta Chi or Hammarskjold because those houses have undergraduates living in them, whereas the others you listed are almost exclusively grad residences. It's possible that grad life is pretty social, but I honestly don't know any more =/

jjs: it'll come in the summer sometime, no worries.

"Wow, I think my parents might freak though...(we're sort of conservative Chinese people)...so there are NO single-sex dorms?"

my parents are also really conservative Chinese people and they too freaked out at the prospect of coed dorms. yes no single-sex dorms, yes single-sex floors...and as a warning, there are coed bathrooms on some coed floors (i.e. Junipero - I got put there during admit weekend - one single-sex bathroom had been turned into a coed bathroom so the left side was women and the right was men...after my parents found out, they told me to put that i was "religiously opposed to coed bathrooms on my app"....yeah.) so you might want to avoid those (i personally also wanted to...it was kinda awkward). i don't mind coed floors tho, in my experience...
