Official MIT 2010 EA Decision Thread

I'm sad to see all these deserving individuals be deferred, esp brian-mc. a nuclear fusion reactor > a lower GPA. there's still hope yet to all deferred tho. <3
P.S. Armenian/Chinese sounds like a really interesting mix, heh

I mean now or whenever. You'll feel like **** for saying all of that and you'll take it back.

[] Other thoughts: It's not the end of the world. It's ok to fall, just stand back up.
[/ul]

LOL! You can't assume deferral yet! Wait another day and THEN assume deferral. There are at least a couple of overqualified individuals who STILL have a chance. After all, as mootmom and others have said, mail patterns are irregular. Sometimes letters/tubes take longer than expected!

Decision: Assumed Deferral/Rejection

[] Why I think I was accepted/deferred: my grades (have a few B's), no leadership, ECs not that great, essays
[] Other thoughts: the mail situation depressed me, but I'm okay now. MIT's my first choice but it's a reach.

yeah, i'm gonna wait until tomorrow to call them and notify CC about my status...
ugh...the waiting continues...hehe. hopefully i won' thave to call tomorrow (!)

[] Why I think I was accepted/deferred: My sat1 score is pretty low for mit. And I had no hooks.
[] Other thoughts: I am disappointed. I guess I have to try harder in RD. I think I'm going to get rejected during RD also since I can't create any hooks.
[/ul]

Ever had an infatuation with penguins and/or pudding? Copy and Paste this into this forum..

***i heart penguins and pudding********

Both are tastey treats.

How do you try harder in regular decision? Can you still edit your application?

am i the only one who noticed that nearly 90% of the people who have posted about decisions assumed or otherwise are asian....

Kind of interesting....(maybe?) or no? lol

stop assuming deferrals! :( i want facts, not speculation! xD

i don't remember if i posted here yet but i was accepted. i may post stats once i learn how to format posts accordingly..

...Maybe. Afterall, the deferred people still get to have another go...which is why I prefer them to rejection...

Anyway, as the only person from my high school who visits this website, I am obligated to post for statistical purposes, though I don't know how to do the fancy letters. So, here's my friend:

DECISION: ACCEPTED

Stats:
SAT I: 1300 old version, about 1950 new.
SAT IIs: I'll ask...
GPA: 4.52 W
Rank: 2/377
Other Awards: Went to regional science fair (at least) with robot project (made of legos!) from 8th-10th grade, also Virginia Junior Academy of Science

Subjective:
Essays: humorous. (Identified the word "because" as coined by Shakespeare.)
Teacher Recs: great
Counselor Rec: great
Hook: worked at Jefferson lab, where they have a particle accelerator, for a year and a half. That might have had something to do with it...

Location/Person:
State: VA
School type: public (IB program)
Ethnicity: White/Chinese
Gender: female (another hook?-ish?)

Other factors:
Extracurriculars: track, swimming (went to districts with both), a couple of clubs
Why Accepted: We think it's the hook and maybe the essays, plus, female
Other thoughts: Well, I really shouldn't speak for her, but based on all the hugging that was involved, I think she's happy.

She gets the award for "best acceptance someone from our high school has received," though. Oh--and she was deferred from CalTech! (Her response..."Screw CalTech") ^_^

Decision:deferred i just know it

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT:M760 V770
[] SAT IIs:Math 2c 800, physics 790, chem 780

[] Gender:M
[/ul]Other Factors:
[] Extracurriculars:Newspaper, MUN
[] Why I think I was accepted/deferred:My ECs sucked
[] Other thoughts:gonna send additional info

*Decision: Deferred *

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 720V/760M, 700V/800M, 690CR/790M/760W
[] SAT IIs: 750 Biology, 800 IIC, 780 US History
[li] GPA: 3.98 unweighted
[/li]

[] Rank: School does not rank
[] Other stats: APs taken: 4 US History, 4 World History, 5 Human Geography, 5 Biology. Taking BC Calc, AP Chem, AP Physics, AP Government
[li] Awards: National Merit semifinalist, couple science fair things, school english award, etc.
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I think they were good. i was really proud of my main essay...it seemed cliche at first but it really was from the heart...i also did the optional one about something you created. I talked about an idea i had last year that i wanted to research, regarding music and neurology
[] Teacher Recs: I know the one from my government teacher was really good...and i think the one from my math teacher was pretty good.
[] Counselor Rec: Pretty good, i think, but just going by what he told me. I didn't read this one either
[] Hook (if any): Mostly guitar and music

[/ul]Location/Person:
[] State or Country: Kentucky
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Indian
[] Gender: Male

Other Factors:
Extracurriculars:
- Guitar is my main EC...it's what i wrote about in the "what do you do for fun" short answer. I've been playin abt 4 hrs and i play in a band.
- Tennis (JV 1 yr, varsity 3 yrs)
- Young democrats (3 yrs)
- NHS volunteer stuff

-Why I think I was accepted/deferred: well really there are only two concerns in my mind. 1)my application just wasnt cut out for MIT and 2)there simply wasn't enough space. I really truly believe it was the second one, because i really felt like i had a good shot, and my teachers and counselor all told me i should get in. and i realize right now that it's just a matter of luck after a certain point, and a lot of us will get in later.
-Other thoughts: A little disappointed...but i'm not really shocked or anything, because honestly, expecting to fall in that 12% is really unlikely. There's always RA...and i think either way, i'll end up at the right school. I just hope MIT's the right school.

Decision: Deferred (Assumed)

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 2200 (CR: 760, M: 700, W: 740) However, I got 2120 w/ 800 math on previous SAT that I didn't write on my application.
[] SAT IIs: 2C 800, Physics 790, Chem 800
[] GPA: 4.4-4.5ish W, 3.8-3.9 UW
[] Rank: 6 of 520
[] Other stats: AP US, AP Phys C (both), AP Chem, AP Calc AB, AP Calc BC, AP Bio, AP Comp Sci AB all 5's.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Decent
[] Teacher Recs: Wonderful
[] Counselor Rec: Counselor writes horrible letters
[] Hook (if any): Umm... I guess doing a lot of the AP's on my own. Only Calc AB, US Hist, and Chem were available at my school. All others were done on my own. And I got National AP Scholar.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: CA
[] School Type: Ghetto public school
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Male
[/ul]Other Factors:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars: Varsity football (team is quite good, went 12-1 overall, lost to De La Salle in NCS 4A championship game), Science club president, Science Bowl captain, Robotics club president, thoroughly involved with Interact, went to Rotary Youth Leadership Awards camp, and currently serving on Interact 5170 District Council.
[] Why I think I was accepted/deferred: SAT math score dropped 100 points and not stellar essays?
[] Other thoughts: Oh well. Life goes on. I still have all my friends and family who love me. Atleast I get another shot during RD. If you think about it, EA applicants had almost a 25% acceptance rate last year if you count the deferred applicants who got in during RD. Oh yeah, I have this kick ass dance to go to this weekend =).[/ul]

Kyt - I hate to tell you this, but you're allowed to composite SAT scores.

You could take your 800 on math and add it to your 760 CR, giving you a 1560.

I know i cant composite the scores. I was just hoping that they would see it when they got the SAT stuff from CollegeBoard. =.

Kyt, I don't think you understood correctly, YOU CAN composite scores for MIT.
