Official MIT 2010 EA Decision Thread

WAIT! WHAT THE !!!!! OMG!!!!SL FKJSKLFJ WOF)( U)WQIOWJF(USIO:FJL:SFJKL: SDNVKL: SEJF)UQW)_(#URKL: SDF JKLSETIO WU() ETUO) GF. Time to email them...

Errr, the application says: "If you took the SAT I or ACT more than once, list the test on which you received the highest combined/composite score or the highest math score." So that means u only put on there the highest score from one sitting? Or else why would they separate math...

wat? i didnt know you can combine.

i thought you put your highest combined score on one sitting.

I take that back.
The app actually DOES say
If you took the SAT I or ACT more than once, list the test on which you received the highest combined/composite score or the highest math score
Hm. Really? I swore composite was okay. My best scores just happened to be from one testing, but I thought you could. Ben?

i called mit and asked them when i was applying and they said u can combine from best sittings.....oh yeah im also deferred i think, oh well just got into upenn :)

No, Ben has clarified that we should report the highest composite score from a single sitting. Also, note the single field for date. If you could combine (like on Stanford's app for example) they would have multiple fields.

My son applied last year, but had he been in your spot (those of you predicting deferrals and rejections, that is)...this is what I would have said to him:

1- All the tubes have not yet been delivered

2- The circumstances of your notification are less than ideal

3- If indeed you have been deferred, and you are thinking you are going to pursue MIT RD, you might want to think about how to present yourself in a positive light. Resilience. Remember, you are known on this thread and this thread is perused by MIT admissions officers. Everyone feels disappointed, not everyone whines and blames.

4- MIT is a meritocracy. My son has 5 legacy affiliations (including 2 women!) and had scores, etc in the average range for MIT and was WL last year. Why? He simply wasn't the best candidate in a very competitive pool. He got over it and is doing great at another great school; if this is your destiny, you will too.

5- What's done is done. You can't control it. What you can control is your mental health, your grades, your attitude, your letter in which you tell MIT you still want to go there, etc.

6- Give yourself another 12 hours to deal with this, and then get on with it. Get your other applications done, do a great job with them, have fun with your friends. Don't dwell.

7- Really, everything will be fine. You are still the same great kids you were 6 days ago. Remember how you felt when you felt confident enough to apply to MIT in the first place- and let that be what shines through now...

I wouldn't e-mail them just about your SAT scores. If anything, I almost think that will give them the wrong impression (too grade-mongering, etc.). They get your official report, and they'll know how to read it. After all, they are much more familiar with their formula that we are (if such a rigid formula exists at all). I just don't think SATs really matter for MIT. You certainly can't get in without them. But making or breaking anything? Nah.

If it's too late now (read: you've already e-mailed), I wouldn't worry about it either.

[li] Extracurriculars:[/li]-Soccer since age 5, Varsity since 10th grade.

-I built my own audio amplifier and speakers (11th)

-Chess club since 10th grade.

-Science Olympiad (11, 12).

-Vice President of RC/Engineering club (forgot to mention this one).

-Volunteer Camp Counseler at United Cerebral Palsy's CAMP SMILE, a camp for mentally (or otherwise) disabled children. (Summer after 11)

-Swim teacher for two summers (before I moved), teaching kids age 4 - 15.

-I'm a community level designer for Unreal Tournament 2004. I work with a team of talented mappers from (literally) all over the world. We've released two mappacks (Ultimate Community Map Pack (1 and 2), or UCMP(2)). The first release, we were completely unknown, and still received over 40,000 downloads of the pack in a short period of time (a couple weeks). This mappack was published in PCZone of the UK, (and permission was asked of us for it to be published in a French magazine, though we never received confirmation that it happened). The second mappack I co-authored a map for with an online aquaintance. We've been asked permission to publish in an Italian magazine, no confirmation that it has happened though. <a href="http://www.ucmappack.org%5B/url%5D">www.ucmappack.org</a> for the mappack's site, and go here for images of my map for the first pack, DM-UCMP-Contrast: <a href="http://www.ucmappack.org/ucmp1scrs/dmcont.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.ucmappack.org/ucmp1scrs/dmcont.htm</a>, and here for images of the map for the second pack, BR/CTF-UCMP2-Sublimity: <a href="http://www.ucmappack.org/ucmp2scrs/ctfsub.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.ucmappack.org/ucmp2scrs/ctfsub.htm</a>.</p>

[li] Research:[/li]-I was invited to an internship at the University of Alabama's EMSyL (ElectroMechanical Systems Laboratory)

-Based off experience from this internship, me and a friend built a robotic system that can map out the interior of a room in 3Dimensions into a VRML file. (Unfortunately, none of the data looks too hot, due to the fact that we couldn't afford good hardware ;))

-For this robotics project, our physics teacher took us to the National Consortium of Specialized Secondary Schools of Math, Science, and Technology (NCSSSMST) at Villanova University to present our work.

-We expanded this project into a computer program that uses neural networks to learn to recognize 3D objects. We learned of the Siemens competition a month before the deadline, so we worked hard to get it into submittable form. We submitted it, but didn't make semi-finalist.
-We're expanding this project further so that it will be able to recognize 3d objects in a clustered environment of 3d objects. (Post EA app submission), I've managed to derive new math in order to describe these 3D objects, thus making it much easier.

-Our physics professor intends to take us to the next NCSSSMST at Renssalear to present this project.

-My school is one of 18 in the nation to recieve the MIT-Lemelson Inventeams $10,000 grant. I'm one of the team leaders on this project, and unless circumstances change Drastically, I'll be one of the presenters at MIT in June. Our project is to make a (mostly) autonomous robotic system that can detect and destroy metallic AND non-metallic land mines. We're planning on implementing a form of the object recognition program in this project as well.

-Since I've taken (/am taking the last of the) math classes at my school, my math teacher invited me to do research with her husband, a math Ph.D. at a local university. I'm researching Rational Approximation with him.
[/ul]

---I know there's more stuff, but because I haven't written a resume (will being doing this for RD as well), I can't ever remember all of it at any time. I'll edit if I remember anything soon.

[ul]
[] Why I think I was deferred: AP scores? Not enough space in the 30% accepted? My physics teacher told me MIT hadn't accepted many students from our school after they accepted 5-ish one year, and none of them chose to go?
[] Other thoughts: Blah :(
[/ul]

I'm a little disappointed- I found out today I was deferred. I will post up my stats later. But congratulations to all who got in early!! And to my fellow deferralees, let's kick some butt during RD!

Prodigy, How in the Hell could anyone get into MIT with scores like that?

he's black

guys... way to be subtle and considerate. just think two things: 1) how would you feel if you were him and people immediately started attacking you over something you couldn't control. and 2) what good is it doing you to say **** like that. does it make you feel better? does it help you get in? maybe the first one, but definitely not the second one.

^ hmmmm, a black asian....
