I worked on my apps last minute (at a hotel) and found SO MANY mistakes after I submitted my app. Plus, my test scores are extremely mediocre for the “typical Asian for MIT” standards. I think it was the content of my essays that had me put up into second consideration plus the fact I arguably took the most rigorous high school course than my senior classmates.

Holy crap!!
How are these people get deffered. What do you need to get in???
I think there is no difference in getting a 2150 or a 2300 on the SAT, people from both groups are getting deffered.
MIT says, they want someone who shows the “Match between you and MIT”. The problem is most of the people here show good mathces, why are they not getting accepted???

…because they don’t show the match? plus it’s extremely competitive and they want diversity.

[*]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: To any high school freshmen - Figure out what you want to do and pursue it consistently through all of your high school career. Start studying for the SAT a year ahead of time (just start with a couple questions and vocab words a day). | To anyone still applying for fall 2010 - Report your SAT test scores 100 points lower than actual. It will look like you are trying to make everyone feel better about themselves. MIT likes that.[/ul]

Hi all, if you’ve got any questions just lemme know. I’d be happy to answer questions to the best of my abilities.

Keep on reading the MIT blogs for what to look out for in the future.

To the accepted: congrats! I don’t know if this is your frist choice or not, but certainly you’ve made an impression and hopefully you will be able to experience MIT during cpw or the following fall.

Deferred: You’re still in the running, so do not worry. If MIT is your first choice, just make sure you maintain your grades and prove that you still want it. You’re now in a bigger pool of applicants, but that doesn’t mean it’s any harder or easier to get in.

Rejected: Take a deep breath and compose yourself. I was rejected from my first choice also (Stanford) but I took it in stride and set my mind to looking at other colleges. Eventually you will find a college that you will like, and eventually come to love. You’ve got a big life ahead of you and one rejection will not chance a thing.

I think MIT dosen’t want the perfect students. They would rather have students who have done really well(not perfect or close to perfect) and who have embraced failure. Kids with 2300+ and national awards are getting deffered and rejected.
I feel MIt would rather want the kid who is passionate about one thing, no matter how small it may be, than a super genius with crazy stats and awards!

I don’t know about that. I hate to say it, but your logic seems ridiculously counter intuitive.

Notice all the Hispanics and Blacks got in with mediocre stats…

tutydau - Some of of them went to MITES (which is basically like a ticket to MIT before you even apply) … and not all Hispanics got in. I didn’t.

Doesn’t MITES have a lower acceptance rate than MIT Freshman Admissions?

Wow MIT didn’t accept a kid with a 2400…

steelersngators,
2400 means nothing to me. A high AMC score probably would mean more for MIT admission. I took it once, got 2230, and realized it was the most boring 5 hours of my life ever. Few with 2400 SAT could match my list of international/national awards and chains of 5’s on AP’s. Then again, that doesn’t mean that I’m smart either. A girl in my class with a ~2150 SAT score is much smarter than me. She spends half the time I spend on homework and still had a significantly higher GPA than me last quarter. She’s also quite witty while I’m really dull and boring. However, she did not apply to the really prestigious schools and her application probably wouldn’t have looked very good due to the lack of high level awards.

Getting a high SAT score means that you are good at taking the SAT. Getting into a good college means that you are good at college applications. I didn’t look on CC at all before I submitted my applications. I didn’t know what I was doing, but apparently I was talented at it. In the end, all that matters are your goals and how much effort are you willing to put into them.

I got deferred with a 36 and a couple 800 subject tests.

But I am not bitter at all! MIT knows who they’re looking for and perhaps MIT is not for me!

grouptheory is right-- test scores aren’t a big deal.

[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I like to think my application brings something new to the table other than just test scores and grades
[li]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: That test scores don’t make or break your application. I think that if you have strong enough credentials and essays, you can easily make up for a couple defects in your applications. Colleges won’t just automatically reject you if you don’t have a 2400 or 36. [/li][/ul]

That was pretty tactless. There are many admitted students with similar statistics. Those test scores give little reason to believe that someone is ■■■■■■■■ or, for that matter, underqualified. The MIT admissions office is very clear about that.

It’s really mean spirited to insult someone over something so petty.
