Got accepted at CalTech too. My parents want CalTech, but I want MIT. Big choice
to make. Help me out.

^ You must be mistaken. Surely white males can’t get accepted into MIT!

CalTech vs MIT - It’s gotta be your choice in the end, and hopefully your parents are the understanding sort ^.^ If you find that MIT’s culture fits you better than CalTech’s culture, choose MIT. Don’t choose another school for someone else, 'cause it’s you that’s going to spend 4 years there.

That said, they are both great choices :)

[]SAT: 2340
[]SAT II: 800 Math II, 800 Chem

[]GPA: 4.0 UW
[]Rank: Top tenth
[]Other Tests (AMC, AP, IB): 6 APs: four 5’s and 2 4’s[/ul]
Subjective[ul]
[]Essays: I really liked all of mine except the Creativity one - I just couldn’t find a way to make it sound as good as I wanted to, so I just went with the straightforward and bland route. I did submit an extra ‘Why MIT?’ essay, around 400 words.
[]Recs: I saw both teacher recs - they said a lot of the same things about my leadership qualities, but supported these claims with different evidence, so I think the combination was good. My counselor rec was most likely excellent; I know relatively well. I also submitted a supplementary rec from a research mentor - this probably didn’t say anything about my personality since she doesn’t know me very well - probably along the lines of “she’s hard-working and dedicated.”
[]Supplementary Material: A video demonstration of my Creativity essay.
[]Summer Activities: Research and travel and a few summer camps
[]Hook(recruited athlete, legacy, Nobel Prize): None whatsoever[/ul]
Personal[ul]
[]Location: Michigan
[]High School Type: Public, sends a handful of people to top schools every year.
[]Ethnicity: Asian
[]Gender: Female[/ul]
Other[ul]
[]Extracurriculars: Science Olympiad, Orchestra, Forensics, Tennis
[]Awards: some Forensics awards, some music awards, nothing national.
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Essays and recs. I tried to make my essays really show my match with MIT, and my recs glowed with praise of my leadership skills (which personally I don’t think are all that hot, in case you think I’m boasting).
[*]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: Don’t stress and do be yourself. I know it’s easier said than done.[/ul]

Accepted!

Stats:
SAT: 2100, didn’t send
SAT II: Math 2: 710 Chemistry: 720 Literature:720
ACT: 35
GPA: 4.0 UW
Rank: 1 of 309
Other tests: AP Chem: 4 AP English Language: 5, taking 4 more this year

Subjective:
Essays: Pretty darn good, had them looked over for mistakes before I sent them
Recs: Didn’t look at them but I’m fairly certain they were very good
Supplementary: Nothing
Summer Activities: Lots of band stuff every summer, two leadership camps
Hook: White girl from North Dakota if that even counts

Personal:
Location: North Dakota
High School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Female

Other:
Extracurriculars: Band, Rocket Club, Track, Diving, Knowledge Masters
Awards: NHS, some academic excellence thing, some other stuff
Why was I accepted: Not really sure, probably ACT score, essays, and interview that could have been waived.
Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging? I was really happy to be accepted, I just answered the questions the best I could and gave it my best. For those deferred: don’t be discouraged, they’re going to look at you again and if you send in more materials they will get an even better picture of you and may end up admitting you regular decision. Good luck!
