10(?) Boarding school regions
NE region=221
These usually are set to be equal to the highest cut-off score among the individual states in the region.

Internationals=?
This usually is set to be equal to the highest cut-off score among all the individual states.

Commended (national cutoff) = 200
Any person with a score equal to or higher than this cutoff who is not a NMSF receives commended status. This group represents the highest 50,000 scorers.

I’m just curious, since it seems that most posters to this thread are parents. And, since my wife and I were both far more excited about the honor than either of our NMSF twins. Do students recognize how big a deal NMSF status is, or are we as parents doing all the celebrating for them?

My kids both feel like it is just another standardized test, and they have certainly taken a bunch of these over the past year (PSAT, 2 ACTs, SAT I, SAT Subject Tests). I assume when the scholarship offers roll in over the next eight months, they will get more excited but for now it is no big deal.

Are your kids celebrating, or is it just a parent thing?

IF D makes it (sitting on a 216 in TX) she will be ECSTATIC! This has been a goal of hers since Freshman year when she first took the PSAT and now that she is so close she is beyond anxious… I think it varies by how much the school hypes it, how much the kids understand what it really means and also how many at your school will make it. I’m sure at a top private school where 10+ kids will make it, it seems less major. At our school, we average 2 - 3 per year, and this year, IF D makes it, she will be the only one.

rmldad,

My D doesn’t even know the semifinalist cutoffs have been mailed to the schools. I’m hovering at 50,000 feet trying to just let this all play out and if she makes it, let her enjoy the moment. It’s really hard to keep quiet and not suggest 1000 times that she visit with her GC. I’ve erased more emails to the GC than I care to admit. And we wait in Texas…

rmldad: I’m a parent but I’m not sure I know what big of a deal being a NMSF is…hoping it is. Neither of my older kids were NMSF and both recieved about half tuition scholarships. However, when looking at schools’ websites, the schools my Sr is interested in don’t seem to cough up much more than half (U Dayton is his first choice) for NMSF awardees. Am I misguided…hoping I am because even at half off, school for 3 in college is 60K + a year!

Since D1 was an NMSF (then NMS) D2 certainly knows what it means and it would have annoyed her no end if she hadn’t made it, if for no other reason than sibling rivalry. She sees the results of the NMF scholarship every day & given that we’re dealing with a job loss in our home currently, she knows what a blessing it may be for her.

School hasn’t told the kids yet, but since D’s scores were 4 pts. over last years cutoffs & I’ve been playing along with Clapuma & Descarteaz and “Clapumatic theory” since last year, I told her in the spring that she was fine. Confirmed it for her friend yesterday and told them they had to look surprised when they were notified

It can be a big deal or it can mean absolutely zero $$$. Depends on the type of schools that you and your student feel are appropriate for them.

This will give a kid choices knowing that there are schools with guaranteed scholarships for NMF. With many of the merit awards, there is a lot of luck since many of the applicants are so accomplished and deserving. A student can go to school X and pay this much or school Y (the long list of schools with full tuition or COA posted on the other thread).

rmldad - Our dd is right on the OH cusp (hoping the predictions are right). We are not really talking about it and almost telling her it is no big deal because I don’t want her to be disappointed if she doesn’t get it. Honestly for the schools she is looking at - it really doesn’t make much difference since her SAT and ACT are a lot higher than her PSAT was - so those other tests give her merit aid. But …she would be very excited to be recognized because sometimes academics aren’t as celebrated as sports in our local newspaper and the NMSF do get published.

My son doesn’t seem terribly concerned about the fact that he is poised to become a NMSF (222) in MD. I am forbidden from contacting the GC. Plus, it seems that the schools in which he is interested (MIT, CalTech) don’t care much, anyway. For me, it is terribly exciting because I never even GRADUATED from high school! I plan to make a big deal of it whether he cares or not.

Any info on OREGON yet? So anxious to hear!!

momawe, I think NMF can help with financing costs at colleges, such as TX A&M, in case MIT and CalTech plans do not come through.

Is this an official score for MN (251), or did you/your child receive a 215 and find out they were in.

My son has 214 and we are anxiously waiting!

McMomma–I interpreted the poster as saying that 215 qualified but was not a minimum qualification as s/he did not mention “cut-off”. You might consider calling your HS as they probably have the info by now (and share it with us, as others in MN are waiting to hear, too!)

Momawe - if your son is looking at MIT, he may want to add Northeastern University as a backup? The guarantee full tuition scholarships to NMFs.

perrazz and bethorama - thank you for your excellent suggestions and I will certainly look into them. As you can imagine, I am a bit handicapped in my ability to guide my son through this process (my husband didn’t graduate from high school either!). My son’s GC is pretty good in general, but seems to think that any college outside of the state of MD is not worth serious consideration. I’m sure there are some good colleges in our state, but my son has worked so hard, I don’t want him to feel that he has to stay close to home if there is a school out there that he thinks would be a better fit for him.

215 qualified in North Carolina. This is a 2 point drop from last year. I don’t know yet if this was the cutoff though.

At our Title One, mostly ESL, high school approx 10% of graduates go to a 4 year college and very few kids make NMSF. When a student does the school makes a big deal, alerts the media and the student will always be in the local paper and on TV. The scholarships for NMSF and National Hispanic Scholar are very important to our local students and families. For students who have a chance at Cal Tech or University of California, even though those schools offer no scholarships for NMSF, this is a national award a student can list.

My son is very anxious in California with a 220.

Momawe, not sure fit-wise, but Texas A&M has a great engineering program and significant financial help for NMF. Auburn, Bama and others as well. If he is interested in A&M (and others) call or have guidance counselor call to speak with special university counselors that handle NMF applicants. A&M applications are already open. Also, check out first generation college attendee scholarsihips. The counselor at A&M indicated most students find additional financial adi/merit scholarships above and beyone their standard package. This will take a lot of work and time, but he has worked hard at thsi point, don’t let the counselor limit options. Good luck. Each university is unique, so research fit.

Just got a text from daughter that she is a NMSF. We’re in Texas. Not a surprise since her score would have made her a NMSF in any state last year, and thus her news is not helpful for establishing this year’s Texas threshold, but I thought that the Texans on here might be interested to know that the NMSF info has reached at least one school in Texas. Hopefully more helpful Texas reports will follow.
