Date Submitted App: 12/28/16
U.S. State/Territory or Country: Asheville, North Carolina
School Type: Public high school - very competitive

Gender: male
Income Bracket Range: $100,000
Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): None

Strengths: Don’t give up. Strong in science (STEM), managed A’s with a very time limited schedule. I think the Eagle Scout award is significant because of what the award encompasses (years/hours of consistent community service).

Weaknesses: Straight B’s in 9th grade, (medical and family difficulties) but overcame that. To make up for it, took the most difficult course load available the next three years, and got all A’s.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: They saw immense effort, and potential

Where else did you apply? Brown University, Vassar College, Boston University, UNC Chapel Hill, Emory University, NCSU, Wheaton College - MA (recruited for soccer)

General Comments & Advice: Reach for the stars. Apply to at least 3 schools that you think are a reach. You may surprise yourself, and you won’t regret not trying.

Teacher Rec #1: 8/10 - AP Science teacher, she wrote about my academics (I got the highest AP score in her class last year) and a lot about my EC’s (Charity + StuCo)
Teacher Rec #2: 6/10 - AP Cal teacher, talked about what I add to the classroom dynamic and how I am in the top 3 students of her entire teaching career (she adored me lmao)

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rejected from Stanford REA, accepted to USC (presidential finalist), Tulane (honors), and Clarkson. Waiting to hear back from like 10 other schools in March/April.

General Comments: Good luck to everyone else!

GOT ACCEPTED TO THE HONORS PROGRAM AT NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY
MAJOR- Cell and molecular biology

So when are the decisions for non-geniuses being released?? Mid-March?

@sml1234 apparently they were released on march 15th last year. fingers crossed. I can’t wait till april 1st

anyone know anyone that has gotten into neu (not NUin) with an act score under 30? i have a 28 and im losing hope

I am starting to get nervous that I didn’t hear back but others have! Does this mean I was probably rejected??? Northeastern is one of my top schools

@mayc16 On 2/9 there were early RD admits posted here, most if not all top applicants. One applicant posted here that he received his acceptance last Thursday 2/16. That is a small portion of the RD pool.

@mayc16 - No, all it means is that you probably didn’t get Honors. I’m not sure there were any non-honors offers in that early batch. Honors makes up only 15% of undergrads. So, don’t stress… at least, don’t stress any more than your previous baseline

Honors is holding a welcome day in March and they’ve already closed registration for it (though mostly because it filled up really quickly due to higher than expected interest), so I suspect that there won’t be honors admits in the second round, or at least very few.

@neutopschool @sml1234 There is an Admitted Students Welcome Day on March 25/26 (dependent on college) for all students…not just Honors Program so you will probably hear by before then and with enough time for people to make arrangements to attend that day if interested. The 15th sounds pretty solid…or close to then.

Decision: accepted

Summer Activities: running programs
Teacher Recommendations: One was from a college professor at nyu probably 10/10(grade A) (the class was free through my high school during the school year with real college students, it was not a summer program), the other was from my history teacher, probably 8/10
Counselor Rec: 10/10 i have a great relationship with my college counselor
Common app essay: 9/10 (I wrote about a very personal experience from my childhood. It was definitely a risky essay to submit, but it appears that the admissions officer appreciated it)

Reflection
Strengths: nyu college class, professor rec
Weaknesses: test scores, my school doesn’t offer AP

I really wanted to post my decision on college confidential because it is not often that someone with my test scores gets into a school like northeastern, so hopefully this gives ppl hope. I think it is important for people to understand that low test scores may not prevent you from getting into your dream school. Unfortunately, I did not know about the sat 2s, and my school does not offer AP classes. But throughout high school I pursued activities that I was truly passionate about. I worked hard in school because I loved learning. I trained for a marathon because I fell in love with the prospect of qualifying for the Boston marathon, sometimes running 55 miles per week in preparation. This is not something that I did with college in mind. I did this because I loved it. It is intimidating to scroll through this forum and see people’s outstanding credentials, but don’t let that stop you from applying to nu if you are confident that nu is a great fit for you. My biggest piece of advice is to not let others tell you that you should do something because it will look good on your college application. You should do things that you really care about

When did people hear back last year (what was the exact date)?

@slowrunner7 I think you are underestimating your positive attributes. 1300 New SAT is at a high percentile of 86%(or 91% at the Nationally Representative Sample Percentile). Plus as an potential English major your Math score is a bot less relevant. Lastly, NEU is large for a private Uni so needs a lot of strong kids like you in order to fill their class.

@slowrunner7 thanks for giving me hope  I thought my SAT was low and it’s a 1390 ( 720 M 670 W). And did you get any merit aid?
