@user_464093 I really thought I had a chance at these schools until I was waitlisted at WashU a couple of weeks ago. If I’m not accepted to any of the schools I’m waiting on, I’ll send a letter of continued interest there and hope that the COVID-19 situation increases my chances of getting off of the waitlist. But right now, it’s looking like University of Rochester 2024 for me.
I need advice. Northwestern is my top choice and I was just waitlisted by them. My back up school is offering me a $10,000 scholarship if I commit by the end of the week. My backup is already significantly cheaper, but I haven’t heard back from any other scholarships, so this might be the only one I get. Without the scholarship, I can afford about two years at my back up. Is it worth it to try for Northwestern again or should I take the scholarship?
In 2019, Northwestern offered 3,067 applicants a spot on the waitlist. 2,107 accepted the offer, and only 55 were eventually admitted. I found this on their CDS. Past years’ numbers are very similar.
Rejected Northwestern, intended Economics major
35 ACT, 94.85 GPA UW, Solid ECs
Was a bit disappointed since I really liked Northwestern, but got into CMU Tepper a few minutes after!
@kate0593 URoch is a really awesome school! I thought I had a great chance at these schools, too, until earlier this week. This is my third rejection, and I only have options at Penn State and baylor. I still have more decisions to come, but its all so unlikely…
Anyways, i hope we both find success in the decisions to come!
@user_464093 Best of luck to you!! I have the same attitude- I feel like not getting my hopes up will keep me from being too sad about all of these rejections. Also, my best friend is going to Baylor next year and has absolutely fallen in love with the school. Both Baylor and Penn State are great options.
@sleeeeepdeprived could you accept your backup school’s offer and then if you are lucky enough to get admitted to NU just withdraw? You would use your deposit but isn’t that normally how waitlists go?
Do admission letters specify the major to which you’ve been admitted, or just the school within Northwestern? If admitted to the school to which you applied, does that also indicate you were accepted to the major to which you applied?
@kate0593 I know Baylor is a really great option, and they gave me a lot more financial aid then Penn State, but I’m not that religious so I’m concerned their Baptist emphasis will be frustrating for me…

I have good but NOT perfect stats, especially for a STEM-focused student. I’m guessing what I wrote was more compelling than everything else. Advice to future applicants: shoot your shot bc the college admissions process is a crapshoot!!
My D just got in and she intends to do Musical Theatre. Didn’t expect this, and now it’s going to make us reconsider. We got a full tuition ride to TCU and that’s a pretty dang good school too. Time to do some more research.
SAT 1520 weighted GPA 5.13, lots of EC’s and 10 AP classes.
