Official Northwestern Class of 2024 Discussion

Rejected. I guess I saved my parents from taking a second mortgage.

deferred - 35 ACT ( 35 English, 36 Reading, 36 Science, 32 Math), 4.12ish gpa, essay about living overseas, and extracurriculars w leadership experience

My daughter got in - so maybe there was something to that admitted student portal?

1520 SAT, 3.8 unweighted GPA at a top private school. Going to double major in Theatre and something else. Mixed race.

D got rejected. 1460 SAT, trilingual, great essays (4 people cried when reading it) and recos. Worry that alumni interviewer hurt.

When he asked “what do you see yourself doing when you’re 35, she told of her career plans and he said “that sounds like something you’d do in your 20s, but in your 30s you should be getting married and having babies.” She was so taken aback and said he was a total jerk. Hoping he did not tank her chances with a negative report.

Congrats to all who got in. Luckily, 5 minutes later she got into Fordham, her close second choice!

Daughter rejected. Did not apply for financial aid and did not get that email, so maybe there was something to those that got it. BTW, her interviewer told her it was the best interview she ever did and hoped she would get in. Clearly interviews don’t mean much…

As an Illinois alum I am not heartbroken that our daughter is not going to Northwestern! We will also save a lot of money unless she ends up going to Pepperdine and they don’t offer anything; all other schools have offered nice scholarships with honors program invites and she can’t even get in to NU. Oh well.

I got in! Did not apply for financial aid and did not receive the email so not convinced if that email was relevant.

My daughter did not get in either. Luckily 45 minutes prior she was accepted at UIUC which helped to soften the blow. Disappointed for her with NU but I told her that everything happens for a reason and she’ll end up where she belongs.

My son got in, 1570 SAT (780 R, 790 M), Weighted GPA 4.72 at a public school (CT). Ranking 6/351, SAT 2: Math 2 800, Literature 720, AP Test: Statistics 5, Microeconomics 5, Macroeconomics 5, English Lang & Com 4, Physics 4

My daughter got in! She applied as an engineering and music major.

Her stats: 3.9 unweighted/4.6 weighted at a top public HS, 1580 SAT (800 math), 800 Math II, 790 Chem, Natl. Merit Semifinalist, high # AP’s with 5 scores (can’t remember name of AP award), currently in AP Physics C, AP Econ, Calc 4/linear algebra… Lots of extracurriculars, music, sports, leadership…

She also got accepted into UIUC engineering today.

Sorry to hear your D was denied admission, but great news on Fordham, congratulations.

With regard to the egregious statement by the alum interviewer, I encourage you to send an email (maybe via linkedin?) to admissions staff leadership of Chris Watson and/or Liz Kinsley sharing this interaction. I promise you they do not want this alum interviewing students.

Good luck to your D.

D20 deferred. Has anyone heard about how deferred students do in the regular decision round? I read that NU doesn’t defer too many kids?‍♀️

My son was deferred as well. According to CC forum about 10 years ago, they put few applicants in the deferral list and seems they have a good chance of being admitted later?! Is this still true?

My daughter got deferred as well. Her ACT 34, has 11 AP , half 5 and half 4. GPA unweight 3.93 weighted 4.67 and strong leadership,My son granulated in NU 2015.

My daughter was deferred 5 years ago. Still remember that day very clearly. We heard that NU deferral is different from other school deferrals (we actually heard it at the NU info session that we attended) and we were told that first semester senior year grades matter very much when you get deferred.

Anyway she got straight A’s first semester, did some important EC work and let her admissions counselor know about what she was up to (she wrote to him 2 or 3 times - the first one being right after her deferral expressing her disappointment but her continuing desire to attend and if admitted in the RD round, she would definitely attend.

She ultimately got accepted and attended and it was an amazing 4 years. But it was a stressful few months between ED decisions and eventual acceptance in the spring.

@Lawstreet. Thank you very much for sharing your story, My son will do his best and hope for the best.

Would love to find out, as well. It seems from this board and other chats that many ED applicants were deferred this year. Admissions leadership has changed, so maybe they are deferring half the applicants as many other schools do. They deferred only 1-2% in 2015, according to an article I read.

have any admitted students received their official letter in the mail yet?

My D20 has not.

We have not yet received the mailing. Also, what is the process/deadline for withdrawing applications from other schools?

From what I know, you have to send out an email to the colleges to let them know you are withdrawing because you have been accepted elsewhere, while thanking them for their time and consideration.
I also read somewhere that you should withdraw after you have seen your financial aid package (if needed) from the college you’ve been accepted to.
