Official Northwestern University Transfer Thread

A place that's decently social but not overwhelmingly so would be good.

Never mind. I just filled out my housing app. My first choice was Kemper and second was Foster-Walker. I hope I get one of these two.

Is there a transfer group on facebook?

also, has anyone made an apt with the assistant dean to register for classes?

I already had an appt with an advisor, but I guess transfer students can't register until the new student week?

ohhhradio- are you in WCAS? I thought the point of meeting with the advisor was to register for classes so you don't have to do it with all the frosh... What happened in your advising appointment? (Is it really necessary to go then? I'm not from the IL area so would it be worth the $300 or so for the flight?).

I'm the school of Comm. I don't know how they do it with WCAS, but I just followed the directions in the packet that I received. They said to make an appt with an advisor as soon as possible, which I did.

At the meeting, we basically talked about what the requirements were at Northwestern, and he answered some of my random questions. As far as specific class selection went, he told me some classes that I should register for, but we didn't sign up for any. He said that I would be able to go home that same day and register for classes on my own; however, when I got home (I live right outside of Chicago), I was not able to register. I talked to someone in the registrar's office, and they said that they THOUGHT transfer students registered during the new student week.... but the weird thing was that no one was sure.... I'm actually still not sure about that. If you find out, could you post?

Like I said, I don't know how they do things in WCAS, but if the appointment that you have to make goes anything like mine did, it is NOT something that you would need to spend $300 for. The whole thing took about a half hour at the most, and I didn't register for anything. The best thing to do would be to call and ask, because it most def might not be the same.

I transferred to Northwestern WCAS last year. One of my biggest regrets in the transfer process is registering for classes with the Unhelpful and Unfriendly (at least during the time I saw him) adviser for transfers to WCAS. Basically, he sat me down, spoke to me as if he wanted me out of his office as quickly as possible, and asked me which classes I wanted to sign up for. I told him, and he signed me up through his computer, which I guess I could have not done AT THAT TIME because you need special authority which he has, and I don't, in order to sign up for classes that early.

Was signing up for classes early, via him, worth it? No! Absolutely not. The advantage of signing up early was not worth the pain it took to get there. Huge mistake. I wish I would have just signed up on my own through CAESAR, in late September, or whenever, when CAESAR opens to incoming transfers.

Northwestern Advising, in my experience, sucks.

Ah Blaze I'm sorry to hear that--I just transferred from NYU, so I REALLY feel your pain in regard to horrible advising. Would you recommend that we wait until September to sign up then? My biggest concern is that I won't be able to get some classes at that point.

I'm definitely no expert on this. And you'd be better off talking to a dean, but here are my thoughts..

When I signed up, I signed up mostly for large lecture classes, which are easy to get into, even if they fill up at the beginning of the quarter, since many people drop after the first day of class. In hindsight, I realize I didn't need to sign up early in order to get any of the classes I wanted. I could have easily gotten into all of them by signing up in late September.

I suppose that, by NOT signing up early with the dean, you could get left out of some classes.. if you're going for a small or popular class.. because (I think) freshman or other transfers could fill up all the spots in the class when they register. Even if that happens though, getting into a class is doable, either through people dropping or, if that fails, then by asking the professor to overload.

What I recommend is, waiting until late September, unless there are certain classes that you feel you must have. If you really need them, and there is a chance they'll fill up, then registering early is a good idea. Or if you're just a worrier, who won't be eased unless you know you've registered early..then go ahead; it's not that big of a deal.

But if you do register early, I recommend that you (A) don't expect the dean to be helpful (because you'll be let down if you do)... (B) be prepared beforehand as to what classes you want to take, so that you can simply tell the dean which classes you want to sign up for, rather than go through the messy process of trying to get substantive advice from him.. (C) GET A PHONE INTERVIEW SESSION. (Even if I was from suburban Chicago, I would still try to get a phone interview session, because I don't feel it's worth it to travel to the dean's office) And I stress (C). Last year, I remember, that quite a few transfers registered via phone, which I think.. was pretty painless.

Ah, by the way, my advice is directed toward WCAS students.

Other schools have different deans and procedures, and stuff..

Hey everyone, just sent in my deposit for Northwestern, looks like I'll be seeing some of you guys (and gals) there next year!

So whats the next step after the deposits? Should I be calling my adviser and scheduling classes or just wait until Wildcat Week to sort that stuff out.

Thanks!

check the green booklet that you got in your acceptance package.

btw has anyone seen/found/made a fb group for us fall 08 transfers?

I haven't found out one yet! I would highly support the creation of one... :)

Anyone transferring in as an econ major?

Does anyone know when we'll find out about housing?

Hopefully any day now. The Wildcat Welcome booklet says "early August."

Any of you guys register for classes yet? All of a sudden I can in CAESAR--I put them in my shopping cart, but I'm afraid to enroll...

Just kidding, you can't enroll. Have to get it cleared with a dean I guess.
