Reflection
Strengths: Tests, Essays were heartfelt and strong
Weaknesses: GPA, Rank, ECs
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Legacy really helped me most likely; essays were really strong
General Comments on decision: It is my first choice, and as soon as I get my packet (USPS sucks) I’m committing!
Will you attend(yes, maybe, no)?: 100% YES

We are in CA and haven’t yet received the mailing. We did however get an e-mail inviting us to an accepted student event which I assume means my S was accepted. ND was a bit of an afterthought (my S wants to attend BC) but we will be visiting next week. I know this isn’t the right forum, but I would love to hear from others making the BC/ND decision.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

Summer Activities: VBS, mission trips
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common App: 6/10. About being a military brat, but not my best writing. For the supplements, my incompleteness essay was 9/10. Wrote about how being sheltered connected with my faith. Intellectual field trip 8/10. Wrote about the TV show Survivor, which was risky but it paid off! I’d give my ‘Why ND’ a 7/10- it was really hard to convey all the things I love about this school.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 7/10. He said I was one of the best students he had ever had, but other than that it was a regurgitation of my extracurriculars.
Teacher Rec #2: N/A
Counselor Rec: No idea. She’s inexperienced with elite schools but she knew how much I wanted to go here
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: N/A

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Only for the Yellow Ribbon program
Intended Major: Undecided
State (if domestic applicant): Washington State
Country (if international applicant): USA
School Type: public and isolated (I live on an island); about 1600 students
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: $200k +
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Legacy

Reflection

Strengths: ACT score, extracurriculars that lined up with ND’s interests, legacy
Weaknesses: SAT, not Catholic, no real distinguishing factors that make me stand out
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think with my essays I really showed how my commitment to community, service, and my faith aligned with Notre Dame. But really, I’m just incredibly lucky. I could’ve very easily been rejected.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: Notre Dame, Washington University in St. Louis, Middlebury College, Whitman College, University of Washington
Waitlisted: Vanderbilt, University of Virginia, Northwestern
Rejected: Pomona
Still waiting on Harvard and Dartmouth

General Comments: I am so relieved and beyond excited, especially since I hadn’t heard anything 7 days after decisions were mailed! I’ve been obsessing over the ND admissions process for two years and have been pouring over CC for the past year. Next year’s applicants, if you really want to go here, give it your all and don’t give up! I retook the ACT four times just to try to get into ND’s range. Even if you don’t think you’ll get in, TRY. Give it your all, and no matter where you get in, everything will work out for the best. Try not to obsess over past CC threads or compare yourself to others. Best of luck to everyone!!

General Comments:
Honestly never thought I could get in with a 32, but it worked out! I have been dreaming of going to Notre Dame since I was three so I can’t describe how happy I am. Really work hard on your essays and show them who you are as a person. Don’t stress too much over test scores and grades, just do your best. Sorry to all those not accepted, but you will do great elsewhere and it is honestly such a crapshoot. Go Irish!

Reflection

Strengths: My essays were superb. My mom has taught me to be an excellent writer. My piano was very intense.
Weaknesses: No leadership positions, little volunteer work. SAT scores below average.
Why you think you were accepted: I think admissions saw the “Notre Dame spark” in me. I know that’s pretty subjective, but it seems that they go for the one’s who will fit, not necessarily the ones with great scores or a laundry list of activities.
Where else were you accepted/rejected: Accepted to East Tennessee, rejected from their Honors college.

General Comments: Fantastic job to all of you who got in. To those who didn’t, another school is where you were meant to be, and where you will flourish. Stay strong!

–Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Why ND: 9/10. I gave three qualities which I had observed in Notre Dame and explained why these things mattered to me. I spent a lot of time on this essay and I think it was pretty good.
How are you incomplete: 9/10 Spent a lot of time on this one as well. I talked about how I am not well traveled and how ND would give me opportunities to travel abroad, participate in mission work, and encounter different cultures.
Ideal Field-trip: 8/10 It was creative but not too crazy.

Hooks: Legacy (both parents), 3 siblings attending/graduated, grandfather was a prof in the law school, perform college level research on campus in an engineering lab

Reflection

Strengths: I think my GPA and grades (especially senior year) are solid. My extracurriculars are a bit vanilla but I was dedicated and did most of them for all 4 years at school.
Weaknesses: SAT scores could have definitely been better. I didn’t do much volunteer work due in part to my busy schedule (course load, sports, clubs, work, etc). Didn’t take Calc.

General

I think I was accepted on account of my strong GPA, course load, and essays. The legacy hook may have played into my decision as well. I may not have had the highest SAT scores but I was able to make up for that with my other qualifications.

Other schools I’m looking at: Accepted to Indiana University, denied by Georgia Tech (I didn’t have any connection and my essays really weren’t that great), waitlisted at Emory

[ *]Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Boston College, University of Florida, Northeastern University Honors, Boston University, Waitlisted: None, Rejected: None
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I stand out because I’m a manager at my job and I’m able to keep up with school and extracurriculars while working so much, my interest in fashion and modeling, the fact that I’ll be a licensed EMT when I graduate also probably helped because I indicated Pre-Med track.
[ *] What would you have done differently?: Submitted my application earlier, taken the SAT again to up my writing score.
[ b]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: Congrats to everyone who got in, and to those who didn’t you will find your place at the school that is best fit for you!

@lagunatic I am struggling with the same decision! BC and ND are my top choices–I haven’t seen ND yet but I’m hoping to visit sometime this month. They are both amazing places that offer incredible opportunities!

Essays (rating 1-10, details):

Common App. - I very much enjoyed my Common Application essay. I talked about virtue leading to happiness in my life, and also my discovery of St. Thomas Aquinas which led me to a deeper appreciation of theology and philosophy (considering a joint major). (9)

Why ND? - Very much enjoyed this one because it linked my whole application. Some major points I covered were ND’s second to none Catholic identity (including daily Mass, Campus Ministry, and the Theology/Philosophy program). I also explained how I would use the experiences I received from ND to impact the world. (9)

How are you incomplete? - My theological side came out in this one haha. Basically talked about how all humans have something “missing” because we are not Divine like the Blessed Trinity. But then I talked about how I strive to become “more” complete through the exercitation of my mind and body. (9)

Ideal intellectual field trip - Probably my favorite one. I wrote about my experience at an intellectual camp for Catholic teens. I talked about our trip to the art museum, and the significance of art (referenced GK Chesterton in his famous book, “The Everlasting Man”). (10)
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Recommendation: Sophomore Honors English teacher, Pro-Life Club moderator, President of school, and ND Alum - Possibly a little bit cookie cutter. He mainly talked about my classroom ability. But then again, maybe this is what the reps want to hear? (8)

Counselor Recommendation - I know him well and met with him often. He really likes me and probably recommended me as one of the highest caliber students in my class. (9)

Country (if international applicant): USA
School Type: Catholic, all-male
Religious Affiliation: Roman Catholic
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: ~ (Middle-Class)
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Not really anything. But my application to Notre Dame was just “me,” so I consider that a hook. Be yourself and let them know who you are, what you like, and how you will contribute to Notre Dame.

Reflection

Strengths: Extra-Curriculars, Leadership Experience, Essays, GPA
Weaknesses: Test Scores, Demographics
Swing Votes: Recommendations, course rigor (could have taken one more AP senior year?)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Probably ACT score
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: Xavier, Saint Vincent’s, Dayton, Ave Maria
Deferred: Fordham, Case Western Reserve

General Comments: Notre Dame is still my dream school. I felt like I submitted my best application possible, excluding my ACT score. My essays all revolved around a central theme, and I thought that was my greatest strength. I also have a decent list of EC’s which I am proud of.

I have seen others with >30 ACT’s and >2000 SAT’s get accepted. However, my advice to future applicants is to really focus on your standardized test scores starting junior year. A good year of studying can significantly help you. I wish I would have invested more time focusing on this important aspect of my application.

I am bummed out that I am not headed to ND next year, but it is okay! I will trust that it is a part of the Good Lord’s plan! Transferring to Notre Dame is still an option, so I will just have to see where life takes me!

Decision: Accepted ** after being Deferred REA**
Objective:

SAT II: 740M2 700US 680CH 630PH

IB: School does not offer
Senior Year Course Load: Seminar, AP LIT, AP Calc BC, AP Physics E&M, AP Stats, AP Psych, Stagecraft
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National AP Scholar

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Varsity Soccer (Captain), NHS, SNHS (President), Key Club (Vice President), Math Club (President) Spelt a few things wrong in the EC section of the common app, that had been bothering me the entire time between being deferred and being accepted.

Job/Work Experience: haven’t had a paid job yet
Volunteer/Community service: Soccer summer camp counselor, lots of service through my clubs
Summer Activities: DoD Super Computing unpaid Internship
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common App [6] I haven’t experienced any hardships or done something amazing so I didn’t know what to write
Why ND? (7): talked about being a legacy and being part of the next generation of Domers
Incomplete (8): expressed my desire to nurture my spirituality at ND
Field Trip (9): [My favorite] Talked about a continued field trip to the local Navy base. “We would be able to measure the success of the technology not by the achievements of the Navy, but by the reassured smiles on the family members’ faces.”
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1:(10) AP Physics teacher I have had for 3 years She has said that I am her best student in the last 30 years. She stayed one more year before retirement to see me get into Notre Dame. When I called her on the phone to tell her, she cried for a solid 10 minutes.
Counselor Rec: Idk, he doesn’t really like me because I’m not a minority but I’m sure it was okay.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes, anything is better than nothing.
Intended Major: Applied Mathematics
State (if domestic applicant): Maryland
School Type: Non-competitive small public school
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 150,000
Hook: Legacy

Reflection

Strengths: I showed a strong desire to attend Notre Dame, GPA, AP Classes, definitely being a Legacy
Weaknesses: SAT and ACT score, I didn’t send in a letter of desire after being deferred.
Why you think you were deferred then accepted: My SAT score was good enough to keep my from being rejected REA, and I think my slight increase in ACT over SAT helped me get in regular. Also, I’m sure the spelling mistakes on my common app didn’t help either.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: Penn St (safety) U South Carolina Honors College (Nice scholarship, also wouldn’t freeze my butt off there)
After being deferred to ND: Accepted Villanova, Waitlisted Carnegie Mellon, Rejected UPenn

General Comments: I’m still shocked that I will be attending Notre Dame in the fall. Being deferred hit hard, I had to make some serious life changes. ND has been my dream school for as long as I can remember. If I could change anything, I would go back and take the ACT a few more times, I found it to be easier as I am more Math and Science oriented. And through this process, I have learned to keep the faith, if it is God’s choice for me to attend Notre Dame, then great, if not, I would have made the best of my situation.

Decision: Accepted

IB (place score in parenthesis):
Senior Year Course Load: Spanish 4, English Lit AP, US Gov AP, Microecon AP, Calc AB AP
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None to speak of… Commended National Merit Student? I guess?

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): National Honor Society (VP), S.T.A.N.D. (human rights club, does not name officers but I’ve spoken at certain events through STAND), INTERACT, Red Cross Club (VP junior year, then president senior year), Best Buddies, Academic Super Bowl (history and English, captain senior year), Science Olympiad, Science Bowl
Job/Work Experience: A small stint working as a secretary for a doctor’s office in the summer, 40 hrs/wk for 3 weeks
Volunteer/Community service: Done through my various clubs: I would guess 100+ hours
Summer Activities: I went to Spain for seven weeks through a state university, and it was an academic honors programs where I could only speak in Spanish while I was there, so that was pretty cool. I went to the Washington Journalism and Media Conference the summer before that one, and I did a summer program at Northwestern about writing essays.
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 10. I really hate to brag, but I think my essays are what got me in. The dean of admissions at one of the schools I applied to told me that my common app essay was one of the best she’d ever read. My ND-specific essays were interesting as well, or at least I like to think so.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: I didn’t read any of my recs, but both of my teachers know me very well personally, and they like me, so I assume they were very nice.
Teacher Rec #2: “”
Counselor Rec: Very generic - I go to a large public high school, and I doubt my counselor even knows my name.
Additional Rec: Didn’t send one.
Interview: Didn’t have one

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: History
State (if domestic applicant): IN
Country (if international applicant): USA
School Type: large public
Ethnicity: White (Middle-Eastern)
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: 200,000+
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): My parents are immigrants, but I don’t know if that really counts.

Reflection

Strengths: Essays, recs, and I may not have the most extracurriculars, but I have shown a lot of interest and passion in them.
Weaknesses: Ummm, test scores, lack of national awards, no sports
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m a nice person. No, actually, I think they just saw that I’m a very passionate, expressive person. Also, they’re pretty strict on IN kids, or so I hear, and I think they saw that I was a more cosmopolitan person than the average farm girl (not better at all, but I just talked a lot about global issues since that 's what’s most interesting to me), so they thought they might need some more of that “diversity” on campus.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Indiana State (accepted), Indiana University (accepted), DePauw (accepted), WashU in St Louis (accepted), Washington & Lee (accepted), Georgetown (waitlisted), UChicago (waitlisted), Vanderbilt (waitlisted), Duke (rejected), Brown (rejected), Yale (rejected), Amherst (rejected)

General Comments:
So excited to be a member of the ND Class of 2019! College decisions are weird and kind of just random, but you will have plenty of great options, and everything will be fine. Don’t be afraid to apply to your dream school just because you’r’e afraid of being rejected – I almost didn’t apply to ND just because I didn’t think I stood a chance, but obviously it worked out peachy.

[]Strengths: Internships & intense focus on a single interest (journalism in this case).

[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My internships & essays were pretty bomb.
[
]Where else you are applying or have already applied:[ /list] Accepted to Carnegie Mellon, USC, NYU, Bryn Mawr, Smith, & Rice! Waitlisted at Notre Dame, Wellesley, Barnard, & Boston College (huh?!). Rejected by Penn, Brown ED, Georgetown, Northwestern, WUSTL, Vanderbilt, & Johns Hopkins.

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight:[/noparse] When one door closes, another opens. That’s the case for me this year during this application process; I was in despair after Brown straight-up rejected me in the ED round since pretty much everyone is usually deferred rather than rejected, but I’m very excited to join Rice in this fall! More than happy to be an Owl

@Rappnic…how can I PM you? I’d really appreciate it if you could send me your essays
