Decision: Accepted

[] ACT: 29

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Did 5 hours prior to 11:59pm deadline and 8,000 miles away overseas in the Philippines (really)
[] Teacher Recs: She promised to devote a day on it, sent 3 "in case"
[] Counselor Rec: She knew me as an overachiever and "brilliant". I admit, I was definitely a privileged student with all the leeway she tolerated
[] Hook (if any): National Honor Society President; hardcore political figure on campus; junior varsity golf; traveled extensively; eldest of 5
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Orange County, California, USA
[] School Type: Public, poor: Orange High School
[] Ethnicity: Filipino-American
[] Gender: Male
[] major strength/weakness: Poor time management and self-evaluation. Teachers say I have the "can-do" attitude, but that means I bite more than I can chew. Strong in challenging myself to study/be involved with a broad variety of subjects/activities.
[] why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: Neither. Notre Dame has always been my dream school since the end of my sophomore year. By January of this year, however, I lost confidence in myself and decided 'not' to pay the application fee. I received many small-enveloped letters from ND asking me to send the check; I refused believing it would only lead to greater disappointment and $50 less. Tuesday afternoon, I received the formal letters from Cal and NYU-- although I was notified of my admissions 2 weeks in advance. Cal is offering me free plane tickets to attend senior weekend; in fact, I've already made several "new" friends (former acquaintances) there. NYU, on the other hand, is only attractive because of its law school ranking. Otherwise, the price tag plus the lack of campus feeling, the deadly liberalism, and lack of community is a no-no. Then on Wednesday, April 4th, God moved a mountain right before my eyes. As I was walking up the stairs, my mom had placed 'the' envelope on the steps. I didn't have to put any effort into carefully opening it and perusing through the letter; the word "congratulations" was offset in such a way that it revealed the content in a sec (plus the size of the envelope).
[li] going to attend? Deciding between Berkeley, NYU, and Notre Dame (I've given up on UCSD, UCLA, & UCI). Someone help! Prestige over academic rigor? I've always despised huge universities, but during the period between my Cal admission and ND's, I seemed to have been convinced that Berkeley will offer me more people to meet (or was I brainwashed?)![/li][/ul]Other Factors: Catholic tradition and the "college scene" (and no, marijuana never works as an advertisement of that idyll.)

ACCEPTED

ACT: 33
GPA: 4.0/4.0 UW; 5.86/6.0 W
Amazing essays
11th at Swimming State Finals
Swimming awards and honors
9th in State Illinois Voice of Dem Speech Contest
Pres of Beta Club, Capt of club and hs swim team and other offices

wow 5.86... impressive! haha. good job guys. Im excited to hear for all of you. And to the ones who were rejected.. Its obviously just not the place for you at this time, but keep trying.

Another suggestion for next year's freshman applicants: Show that you challenge yourself academically as well as branch out of the larger student body. For example, I'm sure I wasn't the only applicant who did this, but I decided to take my foreign language classes at the community college starting my sophomore year; my first reason was to save my GPA from non-honors classes at the HS. Since then, I've had 3 years of Italian and 25 other college units (which ND won't acccept, but worth the effort). I later realized it wasn't just about the GPA, it was also about being exposed to a language no one at my school, at least, really took interest in. Plus, the language barrier isn't a problem anymore between the Popes and me, right? (except the Latin factor) Here's a list of the AP classes/tests I've taken:

Sophomore:
AP world
Junior:
AP bio, env sci, psych, us hist, lang, govt (took the class at Yale Summer)
Senior:
AP calc, micro, govt (again), physics, lit, art hist, italian, human geog (at cc)

So, yes, mold something out of what you do and have done (even if it sounds extraordinary)! Adding meaning to your curriculum vitae wouldn't hurt, and in fact it would highlight you amongst the rest of the applicant pool who lists and lists. I took that list above and spoke of my interest in interdisciplinary studies.

BUONA FORTUNA
Remember, I was certain that I had been rejected. I even spent days gathering information on transferring my 3rd year into my dream school, but look! Only if I could share this blessing...

ND, NYU, or CAL?
