Official October ACT Math Thread

because u have ur facts wrong

the curve is predetermined - YES BEFORE THE TEST

Let me repeat: the curve is determined before the test

The ability of the test taking population has NO IMPACT on the “curve”.

I used to think it was determined after the test too but I know it isn’t now. The ACT assigns difficulty ratings to each question (derived from past experimental sections) and then uses the overall difficulty to set the “curve”

We both have the same facts and agree. “Predetermined curve” you say. I simply say a curve based on prior tests. We agree. So no matter how the people taking the test score on average, their scores on that test mean nothing in terms of a curve. I agree. That is why ACT can score the tests and release scores before all the tests have been scored for any given test month. A curve indeed - but it has nothing to do with how people score on the subject test. It is based on prior exam results.

Yes - it doenst matter how smart/dumb the students are but the questions from prior tests are modified for the new test

Ya BronxSci your completely wrong, there is what we refer to a “curve” which I guess is a misnomer. We mean how many you can miss and get X score, not a performance based curve.

chill bronx we know, its just like everyone is saying, its just an easy way to refer to the number wrong vs the score achieved

i took the April 2009 test…i missed 7 and got a 32…i feel the math on Aprils test was a bit harder than this math. it had a cube inscribed in a sphere. asking for the radius of the sphere…which is one of the cubes side cubed…and then square rooted…this math didnt really have questions that singled out any math concepts…so im gonna guess the curve isnt as nice…maybe
36- 0
35- -1 or -2
34- -3
33- -4
32- -5 or -6

-7/-8= 31
Come on, baby Jesus.

i really need -3 in math to be 35

I think it might be

36 = -0 to -1
35 = -2
34 = -3 to -4
33 = -5
32 = -6 to -7
31 = -7 to -8
30 = -9

Maybe? Wishful thinking. -3 has been a 35 strangely frequent lately… I don’t know that it will be but hopefully its still generosu
