searchingavalon: I just sent you an e-mail. Hope it arrives!

Just got the letter...son accepted at U Chicago EA. Hopes to go there but waiting for scholarship info. Waiting also for decisions from Wash U, McGill, UMich and Harvard. It sure feels good to have one acceptance in hand especially from Chicago. I can't believe how nervous I was.

Good luck to you all!!

Hooray for Cedronella's S and Suzy's D!! The good news just keeps coming....

Sybbie, I hope that Yale and Co. send fin aid packages BEFORE April. It only seems fair that your prelim fin aid offer would be disclosed when the decisions is issued. If it's favorable, the student can forego any other apps (if the are set on the EA school). If the fin aid is not agreeable, the student would then know that more apps are needed. What's the point of EA for parents needing aid if they won't know what the package looks like until April?

congratulations chinaman. I thought your son was in 10th grade.

Hi Momsdream,

You wrote;

"I hope that Yale and Co. send fin aid packages BEFORE April. It only seems fair that your prelim fin aid offer would be disclosed when the decisions is issued".

Because, a student is not committed to an EA school like they are to an ED school, Yale or any other EA school has no vested interest in letting them know how much aid they will get before they release the financial aid to the RD candidates .

Remember that is suppose to be the beauty of EA, you know early, but you still get to shop around, so you'can't have your cake and eat it too. You there are many mechanisms available to calculate what the EFC is going to be. Remember Candi's efc was "0" and she still has loans and some work study, so there is really no such thing as a free ride and I hope Chinaman is not looking for one because he will be disappointed. The financial aid is not going to be based on what he thinks he can afford to pay but what the school thinks he can afford to pay.

Mini posted the perfect example in the IF/Then thread about the person applying ED to Middlebury, has been accepted and now can not afford it, and Xiggi beautifully elaborated about people neglecting to read the fine print and only seeing what they want to see.

On page 1 of Yale's Early Action Application,

It states:

In mid-December you will receive a response: an acceptance or denial of admission,
or a deferral, meaning that the Admissions Committee will send you a final decision in April.

The question about financial aid for EA was asked earlier in the application process, and the advice we had given Chinaman earlier was that if he needed to compare packages, he would be better off applying EA vs. ED. We also told him at that time that the financial aid package would come when the RD decisions came out. He now knows that Yale has accepted his son, and in April, the school will give him a package which he can either accept or negotiate and hope to get better.

If Chinaman doesn't want to put all of his eggs in the Yale basket because money may be a deal breaker (and he states very adamantly, that he is looking for the most affordable school) then the process is not quite over for him. His son will have to apply RD to some schools so that he can compare packages.

kdos -- Hey, congrats on Chicago. We are waiting for the mail today or tomorrow from UofC. Where abouts do you live?

thanks momof2inca. Good luck...hope it comes today. we are in ohio. is Chicago your ultimate number 1 choice? I see you are in Cal. Has your child applied elsewhere?

kdos, Chicago is edged out a teensy bit by one other school on S's list of 7, but the other is an uber-reach, lottery school, so for all practical purposes, it's number one. We think Chicago is the best fit for him in terms of personality (if that makes sense), though there are other schools that might fit better in terms of his particular ECs and off-campus opportunities (such as internships). We were blown away by our visit to UofC in October and will be thrilled if he gets into Chicago. But we are waiting to see about merit aid, too, before we make an ultimate decision. Come on, US Postal Service!!! :)

Congrats to all!
Chinaman, I've folowed your post many months, and I think Yale is the lucky one!
Suzy, Cedronella--wonderful news
Kdor--A boy I carpooled for years is having wonderful time at UChicago

Congrats Mom of 2!!

Sybbie, thanks for explaining the EA fin aid situation. I didn't realzie that EA people had to wait until April for aid packages.

Momof2inca:

Congrats on the acceptance to Chicago. It's a great school. My S is rather relieved he does not have to write an essay what he would do with a super huge jar of mustard! He did go as far as ponder the issue of language. Your S must have written a killer essay!

Ok, Now time to play catch-up,

Searchingavalon, pamvanw, Suzy, ncmom, MusicMom758's , Cedronell, kdos, Little Mother, Wsox's , Jpar congratulations on all of your acceptances. Your kids have done a wonderful job and will be attending some really great places. Keep the good news coming. Those who I may have forgot, don't worry , the list will get longer and I will hopefully catch up. I am just so darn happy for you all.

Momof2inca , I know that the good news is comming, hang in a little while longer.

Momsdream and Marite,
No congrats yet. Still waiting on the mailman tonight or tomorrow. Sigh.

Wow! Wow! Many Wows! I won't even try to catch up. Just to say: your kids earned their rewards and so did you. Now, we'll see how easily you all go Cold Turkey from these boards...some of us are still trying (not very successfully.)

MusicMom: I can newly vouch for the Columbia core curriculum, after hearing from my S that instead of studying for finals, he and a group of friends got into a two hour discussion on the Bible and whether or not it is propaganda. (They're all reading the Bible in LitHum now.) (He's also a musician, by the way)

Bettina's daughter

Congrats to your daughter, Bettina

I've lurked on these boards for months and have taken advantage of much of the advice given. This was our second time through the process. S1 is a second year at the University of Chicago. He loves it and it is the perfect school for him. S2 was accepted this week to WUSTL. He is ecstatic and we hope he has a similiar experience.

Accepted: Colorado/Boulder; Wisconsin/Madison; Washington University in St. Louis ED

Decision: WUSTL
