Reflection

  • [] Strengths: URM? Hydrogen research, essays were pretty good
[] Weaknesses: Test scores are super mediocre. Nothing really “wow” about my app.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied:
Lack of wow factor, shoddy test score record

General Comments:
Although my scores look pretty meh, every single score and subscore listed is the highest in my class. I thought that would alleviate some of the lack of sparkle from the numbers. I retook SAT1s, 2s, and ACTs, and if I don’t blow any of my finals I’ll snatch back my #1 class when the semester ends next week. Hopefully that helps me out in RD. I only have a few AP Scores because of the way my school is tracked. I didn’t get to take any of those AP courses until last year and this year.

(Short Supplements)-Talked about how being a Junior Coach for my summer league swim team as being my favorite volunteer experience and talked about National History Day and competing at Nationals and how I have a new profound love/respect for history thus gaining an identity from that journey
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: 1st Teacher-(10/10) He loves me. I had him for two years, APUSH and AP Gov. I have no doubt it was phenomenal. 2nd Teacher-(8/10) I had her for two years, AP Lit/Lang 1 and AP Lit/Lang 2, and she has watched me grow with my writing in her class. She complimented my brag sheet.
[ *] Counselor Rec: (10/10) SHE LOVES ME! She’s the best! I know her personally and she is my Peer Leading Teacher so I spend so much time with her and she knows how hard I work!
[ ] Additional Rec: none lol
[ ] Interview: It was really chill/fun, like everyone else’s hahaha but she asked a lot of questions about my culture and me being Liberian and the entire Ebola outbreak and then we ranted about our hatred towards physics LOL and we both talked about being children of immigrants so it was good! I made her laugh a lot and she said “dammit” openly hahaha when we talked about beer and eating clubs! She’s young so it was really laid back

[] Volunteer/Community Service: tons
[] Summer Activities: Worked at soup kitchen in LA, Medical missionary to African country, visited colleges, published an iOS app on iTunes.
[] Essays: Hard to self-grade. I did better on the Princeton specific than on the Common App, I thought.
[] Teacher Recommendations: I didn’t read them but I hope they were good. One was by a teacher that genuinely seems impressed by me but my HS sends multiple people to the elite universities every year so it is hard to gauge.
[] Counselor Rec: 10/10 (My theory on these is that they are worthless. Counselors have a bias in favor of placing students at elite universities to protect their jobs. It would be foolish for a counselor to give a less than stellar recommendation—at least at my school)
[] Interview: I did not have one, surprisingly. Maybe that should have told me something.

[] Applied for Financial Aid? affirmative

[/ul]
[ul]Reflection:
[li] Strengths: GPA and course rigor, recommendations and Princeton essay. [/li][] Weaknesses: SAT, I have a hard time with the CR test. Specifically the "choose the best answer” questions. Because of debate training I always go back and forth between the two best answers arguing in my head the merits of each.
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I haven’t cured cancer or won an academy award, I didn’t stand out enough.
[]Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Already accepted to my state U. I am applying to several second tier schools. I always knew Princeton was a reach. The question now will become how much educational bang can I get for the buck.

Durate et vosmet rebus servate secundis - Carry on and preserve yourselves for better times

Counselor Rec: Probably very average even though my GC said he thought it was great

Interview: Weird. I had a septuagenarian interview me and he asked me random questions. It was a fun interview, but he asked me if I smoked weed and drank?? Also a lot of talks about politics lol.

Sent in music supplement for voice and piano which may or may not have had any impact (i’m leaning towards prob not)

General Comments:
:)

**Decision: Accepted **
Well, I promised myself that if I got in I would do one of these for future high school students so I can’t back out now. It’ll be awkward if my friends find out I put one on here though…

Objective

SAT I (breakdown): Didn’t send
ACT (breakdown): 36: 35, 36, 36, 36

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0

AP (place score in parenthesis): Took 8 and got 5’s on all of them
IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
Senior Year Course Load: Dual enroll math and chem, ap comp sci, ap physics i, ap stats, adv science fiction
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): national ap scholar and national merit semi? not really major lol

Subjective

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Tennis (Captain, some regional awards in competitions), Science Olympiad (captain, regional awards), and one other big thing that I can’t really reveal because it would be bad for privacy reasons
Job/Work Experience: none

Teacher Recommendation: Both teachers knew me very well, got to read them and they conveyed my personality well
Counselor Rec: I don’t know if she knows my name
Additional Rec: None
Interview: Went well, we found some common interests and expanded our conversation on that

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
Intended Major: One of the engineerings, don’t remember
State (if domestic applicant): Midwest
Country (if international applicant): US
School Type: huge
Ethnicity: asian
Gender: male
Income Bracket: 100k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): the slick flow rivaling that of hockey players

Reflection

Strengths: Academics, maybe extracurriculars
Weaknesses: Lack of awards
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My strong academics. People like to downplay grades and test scores here, but I’d say they were the thing that powered my application through. The extracurriculars provided the final push and I was lucky enough to make it
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: it’s early action and princeton’s really fast so

General Comments: Maybe they see me as the kid that’ll lead all the review sessions at Princeton. They craft their class to create a functional mini-society so I guess that might be it. If you want to ask me any questions you can message me but I can’t guarantee I’ll respond because, well, I might not even remember my password
