Is it safe to assume that I can participate in the National College Match and apply Regular Decision to a university even if its Regular Decision applications are due before we receive Match decisions? I understand that if I am matched with a binding school, I would have to withdraw my application.

@coocoocachoo, I believe that is acceptable.

When calculating weighted GPA for QB, do we include required electives like PE and Theatre with no honors alternative? And core classes where no honors alternative is available?

I just found Questbridge yesterday while looking for scholarships for my daughter and would deeply appreciate some answers to a few questions. My daughter is starting her junior year in high school. Will she be eligible for the college prep scholarships? and if so when does the application for that usually open?

I understand that she applies for the national match program her senior year, but at what point does the application open and does she also have to apply to the school through normal means?

Thanks very much!

Metank, start by reading this.

My D didn’t do the QB Prep, but I think the application is available in January of his/her Junior year. I’m sure some students can verify this?

The QB Match application opens early August before his/her Senior year and is due by Sept. 30th.

There is no easy answer for the part about applying through “normal” means. You will need to read (and read again…and again) the entire QB site regarding the match. There will be plenty of people who have gone through the process previously to help you with questions, when the time comes!

You calculate your weighted GPA with ALL classes included.

I find this interesting… I’ve been asking admissions offices whether there’s a difference between applying ED and ranking a college for the College Match. Of the two I’ve heard from, Dartmouth said applying for the College Match would be preferred, while Brown said it doesn’t matter as long as you state that you’re a QB finalist on your ED application.

xavier, the person that said that to you at Brown was incorrect. You cannot be a finalist and apply to any school EA/ED. Here is the link from the Brown FAQ’s.

You can ONLY apply to ED if a non-finalist. Please remember when you call a particular school, whether it is the FA or admissions office, you might be speaking to a student or a clerical person. If you do call (which I wouldn’t find necessary) ask to speak to an adcom or even better the adcom that handles QB.

edit: xavier, I can’t see any benefit to applying ED to ONE school vs. applying through QB. If you apply regular ED, you are going up against recruited athletes, legacies, and probably others from well known elite prep/feeder schools. The only thing that is going to set you apart from that group will be to apply through QB.

My question to the Brown admissions rep was “if Brown was my #1, would you recommend applying ED as a finalist or through the College Match?” That’s why, GA2012MOM.

She claimed there was no difference, but I agree with most of your post.

xavier, read your statement again,

“while Brown said it doesn’t matter as long as you state that you’re a QB finalist on your ED application.”

You CAN’T apply as a finalist. You can only apply to Brown ED if you are NOT a finalist. The words “QB finalist” and “ED” cannot go together. If you apply ED, you can’t state you are a QB finalist.

^But if you DON’T rank any schools as a finalist, you CAN apply ED elsewhere, right? This was my understanding of the process last year.

Yes. You can apply to ED as a finalist…you just don’t participate in the College Match.

You can’t ED to a QB school as a finalist even though you opt out of the match. If you opt out, you opt out of all QB partner schools. Otherwise, why would you not just do the match and only rank Brown?

muffinish, yes, you can apply to another non QB school ED if you opt out of the match if you are a finalist.

Are we arguing over semantics now? I’m not sure what the confusion is. By “as a finalist,” I mean applying through Common App to Brown ED, listing QuestBridge finalist as an honor.

Directly from the email itself:

I’m assuming that e-mail is from Brown?

Your application to QB is submitted Sept… 30th. You cannot apply elsewhere ED. Between 9/30 and 10/22 when you are notified you are a finalist, you may not apply EA or ED. If you are notified 10/22 you are a finalist, you cannot then submit an ED common app to Brown. You would then be in 2 piles, QB and ED. Even if you don’t rank anybody, bing a finalist you are violating QB rules by doing ED, and I’m pretty sure a partner college would rescind you. Doesn’t work like that. If you are a finalist, you can proceed to RD, OR if you are not Matched on 12/1, you can apply ED (for schools that have a later ED deadline) or ED II. Brown is not one of those. Their ED is 11/1. Besides the fact that you can’t do ED Brown and QB finalist, my question is what do you think is your advantage of doing so?

edit: e-mail QB

Hi, I just have a question… is it going to hurt me not to have any work experience? Both of my parents work so I have to watch my siblings, which is why I’ve never had a job…

Yumi, no it will not hurt you, it is not abnormal to QB that you would need to watch your siblings while your parents worked. It is a valid reason for having no “paid” work experience.

^It won’t hurt you. Watching your siblings shows a lot of responsibility I’d mention it somewhere.

I have a question about career interests. I want to pursue creative writing, but that doesn’t show up as an option (there’s no “writer”). Should I select artist or journalist?

Journalist, or is there an English category?

Nope, there’s no English category. Journalist doesn’t really fit with writing short stories/books, but oh well…

About the 50 word career goals section - it asks “What are you career goals and how did you develop them?”

I find it impossible to explain both my interest in medical research and creative writing. Should I choose one, or simply cut my description down? I’m equally interested in both.
