Official RD 2020 Thread

@nftynotnifty I don’t want to speak for others, but for me it’s that I’ve been waiting to figure out what college I’m going to for a while, so I need to pick one and get excited about it. I don’t want to pick one and have the nagging hope in the back of my mind that I might always have a shot at that other school. Plus, I wouldn’t feel like I belong on campus - I’d always feel like a second class student.

@nftynotnifty I know for me I rejected the waitlist offer because I already got into Williams which is a much better fit for me and has better stats for getting kids into the top law schools so even if I had gotten in I probably wouldn’t have attended. Also, a lot of schools will only take full pays off the waitlist and I need financial aid.

@allison1225 Want to know something?
I only had a 29 ACT and got accepted with 63K in aid. My entire undergrad will cost me 8000.

Apply!

@IvyLeagueIsMine do you mind if I ask you have any hooks/income bracket? The issue is that I have no hooks (I’m a female from typical suburban middle class white family) and my parents saved their money for a beach house, so I doubt schools would give me much aid, despite the fact that my family can’t afford more than $25K a year (which is, in fact, more than my flagship state school’s in-state tuition :)) ). I’ll definitely apply, but I just feel like I don’t stand out at all

@allison1225 Well there are merit scholarships you can apply for. My stats aren’t amazing but I still got in. You’ll never know if you don’t apply though.

@psychlvr18 Like I said, I’m simply a middle of the road applicant at a school like Vanderbilt, 32 on my ACTs, 3.9 GPA with only 3 AP courses (pretty much all my school has). I didn’t start my own business, I haven’t had the opportunity to work in a lab or make some big, huge difference. I’m a firm believer of everything happening for a reason, so if I get in, then it’s meant to be, and if I don’t, it’s not  There are plenty of schools out there and I’m sure I’ll find my perfect fit, Vandy or not. Thank you for your encouragement, though! I’m definitely going to apply, it’s been my top school since I started my college search. Best of luck next year at Vandy!!!

@allison1225 Black female in a lower income neighborhood with immigrant parents but I doubt it was all hooks. Apply anyway.

@allison1225 I had a 2060 SAT and a flawed GPA. I was 100% under qualified. But I played my strengths in my application and it all worked out! I can be considered a pretty hooked applicant, but I’m pretty sure it came down to my EC’s, essays, and recs. I wrote out a full summary of my app on the results thread!

Can I minor in Computer Science even though I only applied to the college of Arts and Science? Vandy’s website is confusing.

@IvyLeagueIsMine @ThatGirlCoder Thank you for the encouragement! I’ll already be filling out the Common App for other schools, so I’m going to apply to Vanderbilt. Best of luck to you both and thanks for answering my questions

Anyone waiting for Duke and Berkeley tomorrow? Getting into Vandy definitely calmed my nerves a little, but I’m still not looking forward to it haha

Going to say something that many won’t like but it’s factual. Vandy wants scores and hooks. It is very, VERY difficult to get in as your average white bread guy or girl, even with stellar stats. Look at the profiles on here. All very well-deserved but there is a profile they want. VU went on a mission to become more ivy-ish about 5 years ago. The university is getting a lot of great students, and missing out on many others.

It’s funny though, because when you go to Vandy, it’s about 2/3 “white bread guys or girls”.

True but the mission has increased, and a lot of the ones they want, go ivy.

someone should create a groupme for accepted students

@DaPueo agreed! You should make it

@DaPueo There is one! The link is in the FB group

3 rejections in one day… Oh well

@str8up You’re absolutely right. I have no business being accepted to a school like Vandy with a 3.4/3.5 gpa.

Guess they really need the 35 ACT, First-Gen URMs to go there in order to move up the rankings.

Waitlisted, which i was honestly shocked about (in a good way)!!! 32 ACT, 4.2 gpa.
