This entire discussion seems absurd to me.
^ It’s not absurd. There are alot of emotions that come out after admissions results, including anger. You have to get mad at someone.
How so you know that those who have a sub-32 ACT score are unqualified? Did you know their life stories? We’re you in the testing room with them? Did you account for how they may not have been able to afford ACT Prep material but still pulled straight-As in school while having a job and caring for family? Should all the things they have accomplished throughout high school to one test? A test they may have been forced to wait till junior year because of the advice of under-trained guidance counselor juggling 80 caseloads?
Why should our entire futures hang on on day?
@VandyDone
No, you don’t. Only here have I seen the card pulled. Everyone else, including in the Ivy threads, cried then moved on. Each denied person was courteous and respectful to those admitted. I don’t know what it is about Vandy that attracts such sore loses but its making me wary of what the campus is going to be like.
If you look at the threads, it’s mostly parents, not students. I’ve played baseball forever… I feel like admissions officers are trying to put together a team. You need different skills in different positions. I wouldn’t want to be on a team with 12 of the best first basemen in the country…if it meant no pitchers. They know what they have to choose from…they know what they need. I hope parents understand that there will be an amazing team out there, grateful for the opportunity to sign their amazing first baseman. Just do your best to appreciate what you’ve been given, and be happy for the team that signed your player.
So I haven’t gotten my admissions decision because I never turned in my official SAT Scores, so I emailed my counselor and she said that it was ok to still send them by this week. Is this a good sign?
She also stated that she would give me my admissions decision this week, with the receipt of my scores.
@ACTSucks guess what? I’m a white, totally unhooked applicant with a 35 and 2320 and I got in. Yes, I was an ED1 applicant, but I know plenty of white people who got in RD. Ever thought maybe the admissions officers weren’t impressed by your essays? Or felt you weren’t a good fit for the school? Admissions are not black and white (no pun intended). They didn’t place your application next to a minority’s and say “this one’s better, but this one’s a minority so…” That’s simply not how it works. I understand you’ve worked hard and are frustrated, but stop belittling others’ accomplishments.
@Okonnyp please don’t take the rude people on this thread as representation of Vandy. Remember, these are the ones who didn’t get in, and claim Vandy wasn’t a good fit anyway. Everyone I’ve met who’s going to Vandy has been really sweet!
Same here, white kid who lives in the suburbs in Kansas City, no hooks, didn’t get any FA, good test scores and ECs, got in
It seems really petty to me that so many people want to demean the achievement of so many on here because they are salty they were not able to achieve the same thing
@collegebobollege actually, as I have previously said, I didn’t think I would fit in well at this school. Also, Vanderbilt does not rank well in my intended field of study. This isn’t about my decision, it’s about that of countless incredibly well qualified applicants involved in many extracurriculars getting rejected/waitlisted. If you look at previous RD threads for Vanderbilt, you will notice this many 35+ and 2300+ students not getting accepted is rather unusual. Lots of people worked hard, and, in the end, should be judged not by the color of their skin or their gender, but by the most objective measures of their accomplishments and intelligence: test scores, GPA, and extracurricular achievement. While lots of well qualified students did get in, I don’t think it’s acceptable for people more qualified by pretty much every objective measure to have their spots taken by students who are, at least in my opinion, under qualified for a school in which the middle 50% of ACT scores lies between 34 and 35.
@ACTSucks I think you’re missing the point though. As a white, fairly affluent person I (and perhaps you too) have had many opportunities that a lot of minority students don’t have. I could afford private SAT/ACT tutoring (btw those tests aren’t as accurate as you seem to think), I had parents who could drive me to extracurriculars and pay for the ones that cost money, I was able to take a ton of APs because I live in an area where they’re offered, I was able to use a computer and Internet to do my homework whenever I needed to. I’ve had it easy. Yes, I have high scores, grades, and a lot of ECs. But for someone who didn’t have the resources I did, which historically has been people of color, achieving even some of what I did is as impressive if not more impressive than what I accomplished. Achievement is not absolute, it is relative. I say bravo to Vandy for recognizing that.
Also, saying people “had their spots taken” is ridiculous. No one deserves a spot at Vandy just for having high scores and grades.
Does anyone know if and when the RD admits will receive their free t shirts in the mail? How long did it take for the ED accepted students?
ACT and collegebo nicely describe the yin and yang the top private ADCOMs go through. They could fill their class 3 times with higher scoring students from private, magnet, and elite public high schools if they wanted. Lets face it, need blind or not these are the kids that pay to keep the lights on. On the other hand students from 33% of US high schools have NO chance to meet these academic and EC criteria and there must be a way to include these students in elite higher education.
@VnEkFf ED 1 got their shirts in mid to late February. I’m ED2 and haven’t received one. Not sure if others have
does anyone know if there’s a vandy 2020 groupme and if so, what the link is? thanks in advance!!
That would be a ridiculously huge groupme.
@whitespace v truuu. i’m in the duke one (~400 members) and the rice one (~200 members), but i’m probs headed to vandy, so i was wondering.
Oh my god, a groupme for an entire class year would be awful. I hope that does not exist. A Facebook page is plenty.
There is one! It’s not actually super crazy but rn we’re having issues getting it expanded. All of the links are in the FB group if you can get into it
@ACTSucks yes you are right on. My criticism of the practice isn’t limited to test scores but also includes GPA.
Anytime a decision is made based on skin color it is racism, and the result is less than optimal for society. Time to put the past in the past and move on with everyone getting equal opportunity and no more sub standards for those who would otherwise not make the cut. It is a disservice to society to continue to propagate this practice. Modern “diversity” is nothing more than racism from the other side of the isle. And unfortunately anyone who really can’t compete otherwise won’t make it to the finish line or will end up with some worthless degree.
