Good Morning,

My D has been accepted to Whitman. Do you know how their Learning Community is or should she not request it?

Also she may be interested in the Marching Band. We understand that Band Camp begins one week prior to when classes start, is there extra housing/meal fees involved if she decides to join?

My current sophomore daughter was in the Whitman learning community and loved it. You have an immediate support group since all of you are in three classes together. At least for her year, the Whitman Dean of Students taught their introductory business course which led to a great supportive relationship which still continues for many of the students. There is a one credit course attached and so the activities were more or less mandatory but they included white water rafting and dinner out with the faculty.
There were still plenty of non-Whitman students on the floors so there was lots of opportunity to make friends. Plus DellPlain is in a wonderful central location.

Decision: Accepted to VPA for communications and rhetorical studies (hoping to transfer into Newhouse)

Subjective:
Essays (topic?): VERY GOOD. Everyone I asked to read it told me it was excellent and said a lot about me and the things I value. I talked about how art shows who I am.
ECs:Latin Club and various art programs, including this very selective art program at Cooper Union. I wrote my essay about an assignment I was given there.
Teacher Recs: Alright I guess.
Counselor Rec: Pretty good I think. I gave this speech in the same place Abraham Lincoln gave the Cooper Union Address and I told her about how amazing that experience was for me and she told em she included that in my rec.
Hook (if any): Art student? even though I am not pursuing a degree in art a lot of my answers on the supplement mentioned about how art influenced my academic interests.

General Comments: Newhouse is my dream school and I figured this would be the best way to get in. I did really poorly during my first two years of HS because I cut class and didn’t do work, which is why I didn’t even bother putting Newhouse as my first choice. But I managed to increase my grades dramatically over a short period time and I feel like I can do well in college because now I know what my weaknesses are. It’s actually even okay if I don’t get into Newhouse because I really like CRS program as well, of course I still prefer Newhouse though.
