Intended Major: Political Science
Financial Aid Award: $51,000
Date Submitted App: December 29th 2012
U.S. State/Territory or Country: New York, NY
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Hispanic
Gender: Female
Income Bracket Range: $50,000-$60,000
Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): Second Language Learner.

Reflection
Strengths: Essay, GPA, Community Service
Weaknesses: SAT, Work Experience.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Honestly, I think my essay had to have some sort of impact. I wrote about a Winnie the Pooh quote, and how that quote motivated me to teach myself English.
What would you have done differently?: Not taken so much time on my application questions, and done everything earlier on in the school year.

Other Factors: My school has one day called Module which is learning of a specific subject in the morning and going to museum’s in the afternoon and applying what we learned from class to museum visits. Which means I have 4 day’s of school for regular school work which makes it much rigorous school schedule.

General Comments & Advice: If you can, make yourself different as possible. Many people have great grades, great SAT scores, great extracurricular. Write an essay that truly is you, something that will let the Admissions counselor know you are of great value. I got many stares from my peer’s for writing about Winnie the Pooh, but hey it worked! Because it was just witty enough, creative enough and most importantly ME enough to let the reader know i’m different. DONT BE AFRAID TO BE UNIQUE!

Hooks: Sister graduated from Newhouse in 2012

Reflection
Strengths: Essays, SAT, Recommendations
Weaknesses: GPA
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My application showed knowledge of and interest in the university and my intended program. My standardized test scores are relatively strong and my course load has been rigorous throughout high school. Obviously, being a sibling of an alumnus cannot hurt either.
What would you have done differently?: Not taken Honors Precalculus haha

Other Factors: I am a very strong writer and I believe that I made that evident in my application.

General Comments & Advice: From my experiences, Syracuse is a great school and I am thoroughly considering attending. Prep for the SATs and keep up with a tough course load for your years as an upperclassman in high school.

Decision: Accepted (Newhouse as Public Relations Major)

ACT superscore (breakdown):33 (only better score was my reading which was a 36) Although I’m pretty positive Syracuse doesn’t superscore so this doesn’t really matter.
SAT II (subject, score): N/A
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0):3.5
Weighted GPA:N/A
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable):N/A
AP (place score in parentheses): Lang and Comp(5), US History(4), Macroeconomics(3), European History(3), US Govt(3), AP Calc AB(2), AP Physics B(2), AP Biology(2) clearly I do not excel in math in science, but that doesn’t really matter much for my major.
IB (place score in parentheses):N/A

Other courses include world studies, marketing practicum, choir, journalism, child development theory 2, nutrition and foods, personal wellness(our gym/health class), I also was a student aide last semester and am currently a teaching assistant for our AP Lang and Comp class

Reflection

Strengths: my essay and involvement in extracurriculars
Weaknesses: my GPA, although most of my classes were AP and my school doesn’t weight them
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:probably my essay and the fact that I have a lot of writing and marketing experience which both relate pretty well to public relations
What would you have done differently?: I would have submitted my app earlier just because it was stressful finishing up the supplement last minute.
