OFFICIAL School of Cinematic Arts 2014 Applicants/Results

@shicko! ****ing congrats man!!! I’m holding my breath for you for SCA. Still no DHL for me but my sat’s are not so good etc. I was accepted to the top program in canada for film production with 60 spots (out of 1500 applicant) so I am pretty pleased with that and Bournemouth in the UK. I’d really love to go to USC but as the days grow closer it is looking more and more like I’d have to be a transfer. :frowning: As you were forwarded later than I. Whatever there still hope I guess for myself and everyone else that has not heard.:)

It’s just haunting to know that I must get DHL notification first. Takes the “what if they’ve sent it” factor out of the equation.

@themitchster thanks a lot buddy. and my stats were on the low-side as well, so like I said before. DONT LOSE HOPE! If it’s not that 31st don’t worry. and If you were to be admitted as a spring admit, you’d hear much later.

@quwayo, It’s not that I don’t like Emerson, it’s just that going to the US for college is a huge financial commitment on our part (since we live in asia) and while Emerson is a good school, it would be more difficult to convince my parents (and myself) to take on the financial burden. But SCA being SCA, my parents would be more willing so to speak.

this post was on the “Spring Admit” thread: My son was a spring admit for this year, Spring 2010, in the School of Cinematic Arts. USC film was his top choice and he accepted the spring option without a second thought.

Some people are getting their acceptances as spring admits. I didn’t know SCA did spring admits. I would think this is a very positive thing for all of you waiting and wondering…if you get a spring admit it could be for SCA!

I haven’t posted here before, but I’ve been reading all of it. I was wondering if SCA Production tries to diversify their admissions in terms of emphasis (director, editor, cinematographer, writer or producer). So I’m curious what everyone put for their most likely emphasis (both people who have been accepted and those who are still waiting).

momhere: how did your son find out about spring admit? was it through an email, letter, usconnect, oasis?

I changed to forwarded yesterday. Is that a bad sign?

@starchild- I don’t know too much about the production program, but I’m fairly certain all production/post-production aspects such as director, cinematographer, editor are part of the undergraduate production program. I know that USC has a graduate program if you want to be a producer, but I don’t know if they offer that as a undergrad? I would think maybe some classes but I don’t think a specific course.

I applied for the screenwriting program, so I can tell you that they offer that as a seperate program. It’s the only SCA program that is offered as a B.F.A, I believe. Screenwriters are required to take some production classes, but most of the focus is on writing.

Hey guys. I’ve been reading this thread for a week or so now and just wanted to let you know that my daughter got into SCA today for Writing for Screen and Television. (first choice) We live in Denver and it was postmarked on the 24th. Her status changed from forwarded (she was here since the 18th) to being reviewed yesterday. Very happy!!! All of us freaking out!!! Good luck everyone and rooting for all of you!!

by any chance do you know what the requirements are to transfer to NYU film? Same as SCA?.. I regret not applying to NYU but whatever. I figure I can do a year at some other uni and then transfer. Although I know for SCA production you have to wait until you have 48 credits or something. I’m really not sure how it works… so if ANYONE has insight that would be great.

@mitch
oddly enough i applied to both as a transfer app this year. although my NYU app is still 1 essay shy of being done so i havent submitted yet. NYU’s transfer application doesn’t require anything special from what ive found, although they do no accept 1st semester freshmen so you would have to at least do a year at another school. The app is pretty much the same as if a freshman were applying except instead of the main essays they require, you have to write an essay on why you want to transfer.

applying to SCA to the production track does have a minimum 48 transferable credit hours requirement for transfers. but besides that the applications are also the same as a freshman applicant (except for a small short answer box about why you want to transfer to usc).

Right now i dont know for sure if im going to finish the NYU app, because financial-wise, i would really only be willing to incur such a large amount of debt for SCA, and not necessarily for NYU. but ill also have more insight later after admissions starts making decisions on transfer applicants.

@swatdojo thanks man.

Another quick question because I am having trouble understanding this credit situation…
is every hour in a course a credit? How exactly does it work… I’m not sure if the system in Canada is different (even though I’m pretty sure it’s the same or comparable) I was thinking I could even enter UNI now and get some credits out of the way.

Also just to clarify NYU doesn’t take freshman transfer so I would have to do a full year somewhere and then apply during my second year? Or could I apply while doing my first year at the other school

Thanks for your help man!

im almost 100% sure you can transfer at the end of your freshman year to NYU. what they mean by no ‘1st semester freshman’ is that they dont accept spring transfers of freshman. so if you would apply to NYU you can apply as early as this time next year.

credit-wise im not really sure. each course hour is 1 credit, but i’m not sure what is all transferable. i think it would be any courses that aren’t university specific. like if i took an understudy course or field hockey i dont think those would be transferable because they dont have any courses there that correspond to that sort of credit. but im not sure. i never really talked to any usc rep’s about what of my courses are transferable. i took a wide range of courses and combined with my AP class hours from high school im sittin around 72 total hours right now, even though it’s only my 2nd year here. so i figured that was enough, haha.

got it. thanks man… one last question…i’ve heard those schools want to teach you film their way, however, I received admission to the top program here so I am worried if I were to go there then they wouldn’t want me because I was enrolled at film somewhere else. I’m probably just being paranoid. Now I have to find out if I can transfer credits from that program to the states.

@themitchster- I think you’re definitely being paranoid there :)

There are a lot of myths that get generated and most of them aren’t true. A popular one is “you have to know someone” or already have lots of experience, and I think those have already been debunked by people who have experience/strong industry LORs still being rejected. My guess is your above thought is a myth as well. They look at your body of work.

thanks man… yeah I think i’m just loosing it right now ahhaha. Getting a bit delirious.

I know what you mean, Mitch. At least you’ll find out within a week or so. Transfers still have to wait until June 1st. Whaaat.

Since I applied in October, that’s 8 months I have to wait to hear back. It’s like waiting on a baby!

@nwfilmstudent…my son did not get a spring admit…I was quoting from another mom who posted in the “Spring Admit” thread.
@pinsandneedles…GREAT for your daughter.
