*OFFICIAL* September 2012 ACT English Section Discussion

I agree with astoria’s answer

i think the part after the comma was more akin to “our legs were streaked with red dirt”

i’m not sure if the “were” was in the sentence or not though

Does anyone remember for the rhythem and blues (R&B) and blah question had an answer choice that said rhythem, blues(R&B), and blah? Because I can’t remember what I put! Thanks

I answered it as rhythm and blues (R&B) and blah.

Yeah, it was rhythm and blues (R&B) and soul music

this sentence essentially is saying two nouns. rhythm and blues (R&B) is one of them
the other one is soul music
no commas needed

I also agree with Astoria. There was definitely a dependent clause or something before the legs streaked with dirt, which is why the “so” wasn’t necessary, just a comma.

Also, for the “it’s intention wasn’t to…but rather…” question, I clearly remember removing all commas. I think I looked for an option with just a comma after the rather, but there wasn’t any. Hence, I removed all commas.

No, (F) No Change was “but rather, to highlight…” Shouldn’t that be the answer?

guys the who/whom one was WHOM… the preceding phrase was a prepositional phrase there was “of ______” something i can’t remember what but i checked that question a billion times and came to conclusion that it had to be WHOM

@Ssammy I think there was something wrong with it, but I don’t remember for sure. I could be wrong though, haha. I’m not perfect at English - I get 34-35 lol.

@roonsta Nope, I’m sure it’s “who.” Has to be who because the subject was clearly mentioned in the same line. If there is no other subject, then only can “whom” be used. But since there was a subject, it’s who. Again, I could be wrong, but I’m relatively confident on this one.

considering possible dumb mistakes and working fast, I think I got a 32-33

To add to the who/whom question, I chose “who”, and my ACT tutor also said that whom has been correct once in the past 25 years. So “whom” was most likely not the correct answer.

Does anyone remember the answer to the one about the girls playing in the dirt it was like " ____ the creators of our own world" or something like that and the choice were
we were
Being
No chance
And I don’t remember

for the “who” “whom” question i used the “they” them" trick and got “they” so I picked who

@Rewonder i think i put we were. Can anyone confirm this?

@spitphire, thats what i put

So does everyone basically agree that the science section was hard?

@mmaatt Good, i hope its right!

@Student303 Yep, pretty much everyone found it very difficult  hopefully everyone had some good guessing abilities

^ Hopefully everybody had terrible guessing abilities (better curve :P)

Sure, one might say that their curves are predetermined. But if the amount of 36’s on the science section is extremely low in September compared to previous months, they’ll probably modify the curve a bit better to keep roughly the same amount of 36’s.
