Common App: 1.5 weeks
Supplements: still working on them…

I’m having my Lit. teachers and a few friends look over them

WHAT?? Early acceptance letters??? I don’t know whether to be happy or sad…

@courtneyenpointe

Common App, started in summer. I had six different essays, and I finalized on one. Spent…LOTS of time. I don’t think I can (or would like to) count how many hours I spent on them. I’m a strong essay writer too, so I’ll just answer “more than average” time.

Supplements, I had a few drafts for each mini-essays. Took about two solid weeks.

I know most ppl would say “what the----, how many drafts?” but writing the drafts took only a few hours at a time (Common App, four hours, and each supp. essays half an hr each); refinement and finalization were the most time-consuming part for me.

I also had my AP Lit + various friends look over them! :)

Can we apply for merit scholarship at USC if we are applying to Stanford Under REA ? USC requires early application for scholarships.

The Stanford website says " The student may not apply to an Early Action,Restrictive Early Action, or Early Decision program (or any variation thereof) at any private college/university in the U.S.

This restriction includes applications for scholarships or special academic programs where the college/university requires the student to apply under an early notification plan for consideration."

Haha no Nerdess, I feel ya. I started writing my common app essay in June. I’ve only had two completely different essays, but each of those took a few weeks of time. I’ve written at least two, if not three different essays for each of the supplements, but I have decided on one for each of them and am currently revising furiously. Good luck to everyone!
And ki89ol- sounds like you’ve answered your own question. Guess you gotta choose one!

USC’s December 1st scholarship consideration deadline does not include an early notification component. It is not “ED” or “EA.” The notification date is “by April 1st” for both the December 1st deadline and the January deadline.

What muddies the waters a bit is that those being considered for scholarships DO find out about admissions in February so that they can be interviewed. The vast majority (97%) of December applicants do not find out until late March.

I know that last year there were Stanford SCEA applicants who applied to USC by the Dec 1st deadline. Some were accepted and withdrew the USC applications while others were not accepted. It is probably worth a call to Stanford to ask - you would not want to violate their rules and risk an important admission. Be sure to include the information that USC’s December 1st deadline is not EA, ED or an early notification program.

Good luck!

SCEA students can apply to USC by their Dec 1 deadline and not be in violation of SCEA rules, because the early application to USC is required in order to be considered for scholarship consideration. The same goes for other private non ED colleges that require an early application in order to be considered for a scholarship.

I’m re-reading my Stanford common app + supp. applications.

gosh I’m one oddball of a child…they’re gonna think I’m a weirdo because my application makes no sense. HAHA. -__-;
(Sorry just had to put that out there :P)

Okay, it makes sense, but I feel like it’s such a small piece of information (compared to what I truly am. :/)

So to y’all who haven’t submitted: always ask “is this how I want to present myself?”

Yep. That is all. :)

Have you already submitted yours, nerdess?

I had to, because I am a REA-live music audition applicant! I submitted the rec letters in late Sept and the rest of applications on Oct. 4th because my due date was Oct. 15th!

I only had 2 drafts total for my Common App essay… :p

And why only two? You felt there were no more improvements to make? Man, I couldn’t imagine doing that.

^ I dunno. I felt pretty good about it It was about a triggering experience that has significantly shaped who I am today, as well as how my greatest interest developed…

Just wondering, how confident are you, in terms of acceptances? I was just going over the last few years’ threads…

Here I go.
My school is a mid-sized (1800 kids, 450 seniors) high school. Somewhat competitive, but not as much the three neighboring schools rank in the top ten publics in California (my school ranks mid-triple-digits in the nation). My GPA is not 4.0 unweighted, but still decent. I took the most rigorous curriculum available all four years, and I boast of pages and pages of extracurriculars (all focused in leadership, UN/S&D, math, and music). Been to Ethiopia for UN. Lots of state&international awards in all of those ECs. Solid recommendations. I’m also a strong essay writer.

But the horribles:
SAT I’s: 2060. Took them when I was a jr class prez, so academics + ECs killed my score. I have 33 ACT which is average of Stanford, but still. o_o
First gen Asian girl in a fairly rich neighborhood.
My school had many, many top talents (who are just as competent as me, or even better) but I’ve never heard of REA -> accept cases.
And the most worrysome part: although my ECs demonstrate passion, they’re passionate in too many areas. I hear passion in one > lack of such in many, but what if mine combines both…?

No, this isn’t a “chance me” post because frankly it’s impossible to chance anybody, regardless of their competency, for highly selective schools like Stanford. But I’m extremely nervous.

I’m sure all of you are, too, and that’s just how it works, right?

^

Well… last year, what happened to all of us was the “Stanford Bipolar Syndrome” : at times, most of us fell as if we were surely getting rejected, and at others, we thought we were surely getting accepted. lol…

Oh my gosh. I totally understand this Stanford Bipolar Syndrome. I go through it multiple times each day. Nerdess: a little about myself:

I go to an International Baccalaureate school in a little hick town in the midwest. My school is quite reputable and sends several students off to ivies and the like each year. My GPA is probably the thing bringing me down most: I have a 4.84 weighted (I took Trig/Precalc as a Freshman and Calc as a Sophomore, probably before I was ready, and that lowered my GPA). I am in crazy hard classes, even for an IB students. If any of you speak IB, I’m taking 4 HLs: English, Psych, Bio, and Math (urgh). Either way, that should bode well for my application.
ACT: 35
No SAT,
SAT II Lit: 740
SAT II Math 2: Comes out in 10 days!!!

ECs: ALL OVER THE PLACE.

Music: 4 year Wind Ensemble member. Our phenomenal Wind Ensemble is top 2 in the state, and nationally ranked. SO lucky to be a part of it.
4 year marching band member: nerdy, and probably unhelpful overall, but it shows dedication, right?
Been playing the piano for 8 years now.

Debate: 4 year debater, numerous awards, blah blah blah.
MUN: 3 year award recipient, blah blah blah. you understand.
Boys and Girls Club: Been a Big Sister for 3 years now, couldn’t love it more.
I also volunteer in the Pediatric Urgent care at our local hospital, but I’ve only been doing that for about 6 months now.
Student Council: I’m so extremely fortunate to have been chosen as Dance Commissioner for our school 2 years in a row. THIS is my passion. I plan our school dances. 4 a year for the last 2 years. I design and sell tickets and t shirts; plan, order, and set up decorations; create the playlist; order people around; etc. SO much fun.
Dance: I’ve been in ballet since I was two. Had to quit senior year though because of my school workload. What a shame :(

Work experience: I worked summer 2009 and 2010 as a full time nanny, averaging about 45 hours of work a week. Since school started, I’ve cut back a little. Doing about 25 hours a week now. Kids are so my passion.

Background: Half white, half Indonesian. Found out today that Indonesian counts as Pacific Islander on the common app (not Asian) and I’m jumping with joy. You asians applying to Stanford understand. Anything to be out of the majority!

I totally understand having passion for everything. Obviously :P

Basically, we’re all wonderfully talented. We’re all overqualified. But Stanford is… Stanford. I’m seeing it really just as a crapshoot. One ridiculously qualified kid against another. Best of luck to you all. :)

^

lets not start showing off our stats…
4 HL is commendable. But IB Math HL is quite easy…

“Bragging Rights” (hope you get the ref.) only after decisions are out :p

Stanford’s website says that along with the decision I will receive on the 15th of December, I will also be informed about the approximate financial aid I might receive.

But I am at a loss as to how the financial aid thing works. I am an international student , so sorry for my stupid questions.

I know that the financial deadline is still a long way to go. So practically, if I apply now REA should I also submit the financial aid form and FAFSA thing earlier? And where do I find these forms? It also says that I can request a fee waiver only if I have applied for financial aid and am eligible.

Please answer. Thank you.

Yes, can u fill out the css in december after you get decisions

@boogaloony

They’ve been claiming Dec 15, and releasing Dec 13ish for 3 years now.

Haha sarbaraj, no bragging rights are in order. I don’t find HL math easy at all. I do alright, but only because I work hard. I’m certainly aware that December 15 will be the real day some of us (hopefully most of us) can brag :)
