[li] Why you think you were deferred:I am clearly a high achieving African American student, which is right up Stanford’s alley, but I had some glaring weakness that can easily be improved within two months (if I am really committed) so they deferred me to show that I can improve and face a challenge. And I plan on doing so![/li][/ul]General Comments: I was really hoping to be done with this  Now I have to apply to a bunch more scores. Stanford is still my absolute dream though.

[ ] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I have all the stats as everyone, but I was also on Homecoming court and had pretty solid ec’s. I honestly think my additional rec put it over the top (even though i didn’t read it). My essays were pretty damn good near the end and still had my voice (according to my teacher, idk what voice is)
[ /list][ b]General Comments:[ /b]
I always hated CC for a lot of things, but showing your stats and stuff and whether you were accepted helped out. Looking through this it’s going to seem like you roll the dice and hopefully you get in. But I really do think if you have decent (not extraordinary) stats and ec’s you can get in. I put a
ton of work into my essays, and ive been working hard all of high school. The application is just a way to show how hard youve worked and what youre capable of. Congrats to everyone accepted. sorry to those rejected. and good luck to everyone else.

[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: 240K

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Strong scores, EC’s, summer activities
[] Weaknesses: no hook, maybe too much about robotics etc., might not seem like me although it is really me, asian male interested in computer science
[li] Why you think you were rejected: asian male interested in computer science, may seem somewhat contrived, I put myself into the application so I guess they just didn’t like me. Also Stanford probs doesn’t know anything about my school etc. so I guess I had a tough chance…[/li][/ul]General Comments: Congrats to all who got in! I’m glad Stanford wasn’t my only top choice so im not really dejected or anything, just slightly worried about the other schools if I have too much robotics etc. in my application…

HeavenFox,
I am an admission consultant for Chinese students and we helped many students to Stanford and MIT. We have two Stanford EDs who got accepted with lower test scores than yours. I think the problem might be your essays and you were going for the most competitive major in Stanford. I understand Asians are harder to get in, but with a proper application package, your chance would have been better. Anyways, I think you are excellent. I am sure you will get into one of the top schools. Good luck.

KVNL21: Uhm… Stanford doesn’t have ED. It’s REA. And, I don’t think you’re in the position to comment about why a student was or wasn’t admitted.

WealthOfInformation
im sorry, it was REA (which kinda acts like a ED). Regardless, i wasn’t commenting on why a student was admitted or not. I was just giving some of the info and experience I had over the years as an admission consultant. Being an asian myself, I would love to see more bright and talented asian students enroll in top schools. I am sorry if you don’t like my comment.
This year alone, 2/5 students of mine got in via Stanford’s REA, which I believe is significantly higher than the average. So I guess I know what I am doing and what I am talking about.

[] Essays: Fairly good, I would say that my essays weren’t focused on showing my intelligence, but more on showing the flaws I had seen in myself and how I worked on changing for the better.
[] Common App Main: I wrote about the person who had the most influence on me, and it might have stood out because the person who influenced me the most was younger than me. Fairly well written, was entertaining and to the point.
[] EC Short Answer: A bit weaker than the main essay. Wrote about passion for cello and on how notes played by two musicians can have complete different meanings. Continued to explain how playing in the orchestra changed my viewpoint of how such individual notes come together to create something different.
[] “Profile” questions: Fairly witty, but I was straight to the point and honest in most of them.
[] Intellectual Vitality Essay: Wrote about how attending SUMaC taught me to work hard and play hard. Some of it turned into a “Why Stanford” essay.
[] Letter to Roommate Essay: I created a numbered list (it was numbered to the fibonacci sequence) about some small quirks about me that people wouldn’t know right away. Some were fairly amusing (such as what my favorite pokemon was), and some were more serious.
[] What matters to you and why? Essay: I wrote about how happiness is what any human pursues and how I achieve that happiness that so many people desire. I wrote a vivid introduction that showed the readers that happiness can come in several different ways and how each of them mattered to me.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I read one of them and it was fantastic. It discussed my humility as well as my desire to learn everything I can in front of me. The other one should have been good as well.
[] Counselor Rec: Should have been fine.
[] Additional Rec: I got a rec from a Math professor from Stanford. He discussed the experience I had while at Stanford.

[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): SUMaC
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I had a fairly large array of extracurricular activities as well as an extremely tough course load. I specialized in math (even more so than most Asians) by taking Category Theory in 11th grade and attending SUMaC for Algebraic Topology. My recommendations were superb and my essays showed a lot of how I thought and how I act. I also displayed that I had leadership through many of my extracurricular activities.
[] Weaknesses: My standardized test scores seem to be on the low side compared to my accepted peers and I do have a lot of activities stereotypical to Asians. I also do not have any major awards or universal hooks.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I would have to say that being a part of SUMaC really helped my application since I was able to show that I could really use the campus to my full advantage. I filled in almost all gaps across the spectrum with my only weakness being an average SAT score and lack of international or national awards. My passion for Math as well as everything I did, shone as well, which never hurts.
[/li][/ul]General Comments: Congratulations to those accepted and my condolences to those who were less fortunate. Even if you were rejected from Stanford, I’m sure you know that there are many other colleges to try for and that one will accept you in the end. Just never give up and always dream higher.

I feel so lucky and excited right now : D congrats to the people who made it, I’m looking forward to meeting you guys!

TO INT’LS:
Don’t become obsessed with this website (I guess I came close XD) Still, it was pretty useful and soothing(uh in a way…) for me to come here twice or thrice a week, just to know that there are other people out there who are also going through this process, and to find out if you’re finishing your apps at the right speed. imo CC is great for international students who have no effing clue what they’re doing.

Oh and if your family’s doing well financially, I recommend finding a good counseling company : )
Feel free to contact me if you have questions!

[] Job/Work Experience: Soccer Referee (since 7th grade) - I have travelled across the country and have reffed Youth Nationals, Regionals, Olympic Development Program Regionals, State Cup, Futsal Nationals. I am a nominee for my state’s 2011 Young Referee of the Year award.
[] Volunteer/Community service: 384 hours. Volunteer refereeing (pro-bono), volunteering to run various events and help out in my city. Also I help out with youth referee clinics to improve the level of officiating in our area.
[] Summer Activities: Refereeing State, Regionals, & Nationals, Internship at a downtown Advertising Agency (summer 2011), Internship as a Spanish/English translator with a railroad company (summer 2011).
[] Essays: Worked for about 1 month on them, put in many, many hours and worked everyday after school with my teachers to perfect them. Literally put everything I had into them.
[] Common App Main: My common app essay took several months of work and I believe it showed. Very strong. It was about the two halves of my brain and how they can bicker and fight, but also cooperate and collaborate for my success.
[] EC Short Answer: Strong. About refereeing and the priceless moments that keep me going even when everyone around me is yelling and screaming.
[] “Profile” questions: I just put my favorite artists/authors/songs/books/etc. Nothing special.
[] Intellectual Vitality Essay: I wrote about a project I did in AP English Language class.
[] Letter to Roommate Essay: I wrote about my peculiar foot condition and explained why I wear special shoes.
[] What matters to you and why? Essay: I wrote about how human societal progress was important to me.
[] Teacher Recommendation: 2 recs. Both were probably above average, although many other students at my school asked these same 2 teachers for recs, so I suppose they may have been somewhat generic or bland. But I talked with these teachers a lot during the admissions process and expressed my burning desire to attend Stanford, so hopefully they personalized their essays towards me.
[] Counselor Rec: Strong. Personal. I fostered a very strong, tight-knit relationship with my counselor starting the end of my junior year. We are good friends and I often walk into her office just to chat about the Republican Debates or school or whatever. Extremely thankful for such a great counselor.

[] Income Bracket: ~$120,000 - I think.
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): N/A
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Test Scores, Essays (both common app and supplemental), extracurricular involvement (refereeing especially).
[] Weaknesses: GPA, class rank.
[li] Why you think you were accepted: I poured my soul into those supplemental essays. I gave it all I had. Literally. [/li][/ul]General Comments: Still amazed that I was one of 755 students to be accepted REA in 2011. Even more amazed they picked me although I was NOT in the top 10% of my class. I got 5 B’s freshman year, 2 sophomore year, and none junior year. Stanford called my counselor to request my current senior grades during mid-November, and fortunately they were all A’s in my 5 AP classes. Surely they noticed my upward trend in my grades. I also have to believe they really got to know ME as a person through my recs and essays.

As a possible rd international applicant, it really is frustrating not to see any internationals who applied for FA. I have no idea what my chances will be like.
