Official Stanford SCEA 2017 Applicants' Discussion Thread

Another question. How much does legacy matter if you had a sibling that went to Stanford? Are legacies for siblings guaranteed as long as your SAT/GPA aren’t extremely low?

@SAT128. What’s the difference between regionally and nationally published? The paper was co-authored, but I’m lead author.

@ccuser
There is a huge difference. The magnitude of the research paper’s importance or unique/recognized qualities would determine on what scale it was published/released to the scientific community. Of course, at a national scale it would be taken more seriously and with greater praise from an institution like Stanford; just as an award won at a national scale vs only a regional one. It’s definitely a plus that you’re the lead author, and they’ll appreciate the fact that co-author(s) are necessary when dealing with research papers that must be verified scientifically.

Or I could just be confused. There is a difference between publishing a research paper in a scientific journal or as an article, as opposed to just putting one up online and having a professor say it’s worthy. You’ll need to clarify this, because I get the feeling that your idea of ‘published’ may be different

Ummm… i think it was national scale because it was in a peer-reviewed journal and passed through several versions before being accepted (aka it was selective on the collegiate level) I think the journal is based in some European country lol.

Do folks think there’s still time to submit info to Stanford for 2013 NFAA YoungArts winners, or is it too late to matter?

I just wanna say… 6.6%

Sounds quite impressive to me, as long as you make sure to phrase it that way to Stanford. Research paper published in a scientifically recognized and selective peer-reviewed journal on a national scale? You’ll definitely want to mention the name of the journal though. Obv can’t just say ‘journal based in some European country’. Make sure it’s legitimate

Lol thanks. I gave Stanford the name of the journal and did phrase it like that haha.

no worries. The book won’t do much for him. Getting a book published is definitely something, but probably not a big deal in the eyes of the college. Is it a good book at least, because some of the things published nowadays are atrocious. You may have trouble if his essays are amazing, but besides that, there’s a possibility you could both get in.

I don’t think other people applying from your same school will hurt THAT much. If you’re both qualified, you’ll probably both get in.

So why did you guys apply to Stanford? I’m just curious because a lot of you are super qualified and could have applied anywhere. Personally, I fell in love with the campus and community feel of the school.

Completly agree with Whitehouses. The students just felt happy, something I didn’t see in any of the Ivies

Ya, definitely the campus.

^all of the above

I wanted to go somewhere that not only has the academics but also was somewhere that I could enjoy myself. Plus the entrepreneurial spirit. Also great location/weather. Oh and the athletics. Oh yeah and everything else about Stanford.

I liked that Stanford seemed more welcoming than most of the Ivies (both on campus and through their website) and that they had a quarter system, because I had to sacrifice a lot of electives in high school to have a competitive schedule. Also, the California weather would be nice :)

@cherryblossom71… it’s POURING rain and like, freezing (well… about 50 degrees…) right now! It’s not perfect all the time… just most of the time! ;)

Well, I’m banking on the fact that on average, the weather at Stanford will be a whole lot better than here in upstate New York :stuck_out_tongue: I would kill for 50 degrees right about now haha…

You can probably count on that!! We’re so wimpy in the Bay…

wow… lot of bay applicants on this thread? is it harder to get into stanford from the bay area since there are a lot applying?
