[] Essays: CommonApp about improv comedy. But I am 99% certain that it’s the Stanford supplement essays that got me in. They were by far the best essays of all my college essays, and they gave me the room to show my personality in a way that, Yale for example, didn’t.

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: See strengths.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Rice, UNC, USC, UMich, Kenyon, UMiami, LSU. Rejected: Yale.

[/ul]General Comments: Wow! This was the biggest shock ever. I wasn’t even nervous when I opened the e-mail because I was certain I had been rejected, especially after the Yale verdict on Thursday. Great news! I have to decide between Rice and Stanford now, which won’t be easy, but that’s the best kind of problem to have, I think. I am probably going to Rice though, since their scholarship makes it a lot cheaper than Stanford. Congratulations to admits, and to everyone else, this process is a crapshoot and you shouldn’t take it as a measure of anything significant. :)

[] Volunteer/Community service: NHS
[] Summer Activities: Boys state, online classes, band camp, reading, chilling
[] Essays: Great, all essays were very genuine and written from the heart.

Common app main was about how owning a lawn mowing business influenced my views on the natural world, and how I eventually remade my business into what it is today.

Intellectual vitality was about my somewhat eccentric thought processes on philosophy and reality.

Roommate essay about my love to cook and my absent mindedness

What matters to you essay… this one was my least fav (it was the least unique), about how you have to find the small moments to enjoy life.

extracurricular essay was somewhat humorous, about band

[] Teacher Recommendation: All good. One very anecdotal, one very lauding
[] Counselor Rec: excellent; I’ve known my principal for like 6 years now.
[] Additional Rec: excellent; from my wise old wrestling coach

[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: Public, average
[] Ethnicity: White/Vietnamese
[] Gender: XY
[] Income Bracket: prefer not to specify
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none except perhaps Questbridge, but I doubt it helped.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Genuine, touching essays. Recommendations.
[] Weaknesses: imperfect GPA, imperfect scores
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: It had to be the essays and some miracle.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCI, USC, CPSLO, Harvey Mudd
waitlisted: Rice, CMU (supplemental essays at these schools sucked because I spent all my time on the Stanford essays haha)

[/ul]General Comments: My essays definitely helped a lot; I spent a lot of time tweaking them. I always felt I would be a great fit for Stanford, so I was as genuine and as truthful as I could be in my application. Somehow it paid off. Some excellent candidates from my school applied, and I am kind of surprised Stanford chose me. I will definitely not waste this wonderful opportunity I was given. Congrats to all who got in, and to those who didn’t, you are all still utterly amazing :)

[] Teacher Recommendation:
Math teacher for 3 yrs, and math team coach. Knew me well.
Spanish teacher for 2 yrs, saw a lot of growth in my personality and character as I tried to master a new language.
[] Counselor Rec: Superb
[] Additional Rec: Letter from Stanford professor. Said that I was one of the most brilliant high schoolers he has ever worked with.
[] Interview: none

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Large Public (2200 students)
[] Ethnicity: Chinese…
[] Gender: Male :frowning:
[] Income Bracket: 200,000+
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Solid test scores, great recommendations
[] Weaknesses: Ethnicity…? On paper my application looks like a cookie-cutter Asian
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Our school is rather diverse and our school district is rated one of the worst in the nation. I think it helped that no one has gotten into Stanford for the past 2 yrs.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: Harvard, Princeton, Caltech (EA), Columbia (Rabi Scholar), UPenn, UCBerkeley Regents, USC Trustees Scholarship
Waitlist: MIT

[/ul]General Comments:
I am still in shock after receiving my Ivy e-mails, and now this. I’ll need a couple of days for reality to come back to me, since I had initially prepared to get rejected by most of the top 10 schools that I applied to…I must have been very lucky with the admissions committee.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2230 -->730 CR, 740 M, 760 W (8 Essay)
[] ACT: 35 → 34 R, 34 E (8 essay), 35 M, 36 S
[] SAT II: 790 Math II, 770 Chem, 720 USH
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 5/420
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Chem (5), Spanish Lang (5), USH (5), English Lang (5)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: APES, AP Calc BC, AP English Lit, AP Physics C: Mech, AP Gov, Journalism
[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Commended, AP Scholar with Honor, Presidential Scholars Candidate, nothing really too major
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Journalism (Editor-in-Chief), Random Acts of Kindness (Founder/President), National Honor Society (President), Freshmen Mentoring (3x Mentor), Academic Olympics, Mock Trial (Best Witness @ both regionals and state), Free tutoring
[] Job/Work Experience: Work 25 hr/week at my parents’ business as receptionist during the school year, 60 hrs/week during the summer
[] Volunteer/Community service: volunteering with NHS, didn’t have a significant number of hours like many of you, free tutoring (all subjects, SAT/ACT prep for juniors)
[] Summer Activities: Working! And making my way through a list of 1000 books to read before you die.
[] Essays: Pretty good; I liked them. My Common App essay was about skepticism and it is by far my favorite thing I’ve ever written. Intellectual Vitality was about my interest in infectious disease (Ebola, Marburg), 7.5/10, Dear Roommate was light-hearted and quirky, 8/10, What matters to you essay was the most difficult for me, it was way too broad, I ended up writing about being opinionated, 6/10. If any of you future applicants would like to read my essays, feel free to PM me.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Really good! I didn’t get to read them until after I submitted, but the one my Spanish teacher (and RAK Club advisor) wrote was beautiful. My APUSH teacher (and NHS advisor) wrote the other, basically said I was the best student he’s had (pshh yeah right), not quite as good as the other.
[] Counselor Rec: Didn’t get to see it, but I don’t really know her all too well. At my school there’s generally very little interaction between the guidance counselors and the students. I’m assuming it was rather typical and cliche.
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[li] Interview: N/A
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Nevada
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Large-ish public (about 1850 students)
[] Ethnicity: Asian (Vietnamese)
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: <$60000
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First generation college
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Grades, teacher recs, essays
[] Weaknesses: “the Asian anti-hook” and the fact that there is nothing exceptional in my application as one poster once told me
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I have no clue…I was stunned when I saw the “Congratulations.” I thought that maybe my extracurriculars were a little too scattered (no specific passion/interest) and that my application just wouldn’t be competitive enough for a school that accepted 5.3% in the RD round. I guess they saw something in me that they thought would fit with their student body! My best friend was admitted too, which was crazy considering in the last two years, Stanford has only accepted one student per year, both half-black student athletes.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Went 6/6 (SO HAPPY about that!), Brown, Northwestern, URochester, University of San Diego, UNR Honors Program (state school, safety)

[/ul]General Comments: I’m pretty darn positive that I’ll be attending Stanford come fall. They offered me a very generous aid package, and none of the FA offers from the other schools can even compare (other than the state school where I’d receive a huge stipend). Excited to be a Cardinal!

[] Essays: My common app essay wasn’t exceptionally well written, but the subject was different (it was about a legal fiasco surrounding censorship and homophobia that occurred during my freshman year and resulted in a new school principal and a few new school policies)
[] Teacher Recommendation: AP Calc recommendation was good, English recommendation was probably mediocre since I had to use my freshman English teacher (my Sophomore year teacher hated me)
[] Counselor Rec: Very good (my counselor knows me fairly well from programs outside of school)
[] Additional Rec: My journalism rec was AWESOME (that teacher loves me), and my art rec was decent.
[li] Interview: I was really nervous about it. My interviewer was impossible to read. It didn’t go poorly, I just didn’t think he was especially impressed or anything. Nice guy though.
[/li]

[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: <$60k (zero)
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None, really; I applied a year early, which I think was a draw for some colleges and a definite turn-off to others.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Passion. I tried to make sure that came across in all my writing; passion mostly for the school itself and for the very specific field I’m hoping to go into, prosthetics. Art (especially the stone sculpture, which is more unique) and my legacy status with a father who graduated from Stanford and a brother in his Junior year probably didn’t hurt.
[] Weaknesses: Bad SAT IIs, a year’s worth of coursework less than the vast majority of applicants, not too many APs or extracurriculars
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think my art supplement tipped the scales. That’s where I stand out the most, even though I applied as an engineering student. And my brother is there.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: Harvard, Dartmouth, U. Penn, USC, U. of Oregon, U. of San Francisco
Waitlisted: Brown, Pitzer, Harvey Mudd
Rejected: Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Pomona, MIT
Haven’t heard from: Claremont McKenna

[/ul]General Comments:
Stanford 2016!!
My acceptance came out of nowhere, I hadn’t planned on that, but Stanford has been my #1 choice since my brother (and I) visited four years ago.

Reflection

Strengths:Unique schooling, good essays, decent grades.
Weaknesses: My ACT score, that my teachers only get to know me for 16 weeks so bonds made are not as strong as most students can get. That being home schooled didn’t allow for many leadership positions in clubs. Not having the ability to volunteer more, or be more interactive with activities.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: It’s a great school, and I had many disadvantages against me, I knew it would be a HUGE reach. I just really liked the school, and their program for letting students with family incomes under 40,000 attend there for tuition and room/board for free.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rejected: Yale, Rice. Accepted: University of Texas-Austin.

General Comments: Congratulations to everyone who did get accepted! And it’s not so bad that I got rejected, if I would’ve attended any of my schools besides UT, I would not have transferred any of my college credits (And since I’ll have about 60 credit hours by the time of my hs graduation, at least I’ll get to graduate earlier than most. And I can always apply to a better school for grad school .) To everyone who was rejected like me, just stay positive! Everything will work out.

[] Volunteer/Community service: Council for a regional student program for a charity (10-12, Chair in 12), fundraising and awareness for the disease I do research on (raised a few thousand) (11-12).
[] Summer Activities: Each job took up one summer each, worked full-time. Grade 10 summer was spent at Shad Valley. Did nothing in grade 9 summer.
[] Essays: Worked on them all summer. Have something like 30 drafts of each essay. Best pieces of writing I’ve ever done. Talked about how I saw the people side of research after meeting the patients that my work impacted, sketchy Chinese takeout food, and the importance of childhood.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Chemistry teacher said research was at a Master’s thesis level. English teacher’s was absolutely glowing.
[] Counselor Rec: A bit generic, but very long and based on what she heard from my teachers. Really good considering we talked maybe three times throughout high school.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: National/international science awards and media coverage, whole application showed passion for the disease I work on (research, public speaking, fundraising). Good objective stats with early self-studied APs.
[] Weaknesses: Only one major leadership position, almost no ECs outside of my passion area, not involved in the school at all.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: International student asking for aid.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Early action acceptance at Yale, likely letter from Harvard, regular decision acceptance at Princeton. Rejected from Stanford.

[/ul]General Comments: Tried too hard to be that kid that was the president of all the clubs, etc in the first two years of high school, but began research in grade 11 and discovered my passion. My entire application was essentially built on my final two years. Realized it’s so key to find what you love and just do it - regardless of when you realize or how do you realize it, you’ll end up a better person whether you get into your dream school or not.

Hope this is at least somewhat helpful to future applicants. I know I went through countless posts like this one over the last few years so I figured I had to return the favor. You really don’t need to be the president of 6 clubs or whatever and chair five committees to get into a good college - however clich

[] Teacher Recommendation: I assume they were both very general, the teachers I ask usually get a lot of requests, so I know they don’t have time to write anything super specific for me.
[] Counselor Rec: not even written by my counselor - she was out on maternity leave.
[] Additional Rec: I sent in one from my piano teacher (a strong recommendation that was included in my musical supplement). I also sent in another one from my youth group director (I didn’t read it, but we’ve gotten to know each other pretty well over these last couple years. I expect it was quite strong)
[li] Interview: I had mine at NIH (with a post-bac that was working there while preparing to apply for med school). I showed her my manuscript and I think she was impressed with how interested I was in research. [] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I took a risk in writing about my faith for my essay (and sending in a church-affiliated recommendation), but it turned out well because I was honest but not preachy in my essay. I had a lot of fun writing my essays and spent a lot of time on them. I think the reason I got in was because the topics for my essays came so quickly to me - I knew exactly what to write almost immediately after reading the prompt, and that was really helpful (it made me feel like I fit well with what the school was looking for).
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted - Columbia, BME @ JHU, Duke, UC Berkeley, UChicago, and various safeties
Rejected - MIT
Waitlisted - Dartmouth

[/ul]General Comments: Future applicants! Please do not be afraid to write about what is most important to you. Go with your gut when you know that it’s what really matters to you. Also, it’s never too late to get involved in school clubs or even to start one yourself. I started my club in my senior year (even though I was later than others who got involved earlier in high school, I worked hard to really encourage what I thought was important - research and scientific inquiry. Now my club has weekly research presentations by our own members and it’s become a lot of fun to see it grow.)
Stanford likes people who are go after what they are passionate about. Music and research were my two passions, and I was so fortunate to have the opportunities that I had to pursue them to the fullest. Best of luck to you future applicants - please feel free to send me an email if you want any more pointers.
