***Official Thread for 2014 BSMD applicants***

@IMGDAD, I was actually quite taken a back. I’m not sure why they are calling it an interview because it was not an interview AT ALL. It was a little half hour pep talk and Jonathan actually called it a “mock interview” to prepare us for the Drexel med interview later on. So our apps arent really going through any initial screening here except to check that we meet the minimum requirements and then are being forwarded to drexel. He just talked a lot about what the interview at drexel is like and what they ask. There were definitely things he said that I have no idea about before so it really helped. He only asked two questions as part of the “mock interview” and then he gives you feedback on improving your responses to the questions.
One of the things that struck me most was that if we get the drexel med interview, we will have to write an essay on-spot at the interview O.o
I definitely recommend going to see him in person because this was really helpful, it was just as if he is your counselor helping you to get into med schools and he offers to meet again and do mock interviews specifically for the drexel program if you wish.

As for Rosemont itself, I liked the college! It was a cute, cozy little place right by Villanova too so you have access to some of their stuff if necessary (like inter-library loans, etc)

@MedicalBoy- We’re like twins!! Everything you said in that post happened to me too! I don’t think Penn is 100% an interview, but I think the chances are likely. I hope we hear soon
@Lari123- U Miami sent an email. If you didn’t get one, then maybe you got an interview. Good luck!!
@GreenSage- Wait seriously?! We have to write an in-interview essay?! That’s just kinda scary… Is that for all schools leading into Drexel?
Haha I didn’t like Rosemont when I visited! I thought it was kinda lonely. And it’s great that you got interview tips and stuff!!

There was one school last year (Robert Morris?) which one applicant got thru to for combined and mentioned there were barely any applicants.

@starlight27, when did you visit Rosemont? Students were starting to go home after finals today so it was a bit lonely as you say, but even with the few staff and students that were there, it seemed nicer with the people. Everyone was so up beat, happy, and enthusiastic!
And yeah, the essay is part of the interview for drexel med so it would be through any UG school. It definitely sounds intimidating, I agree ahhh

@GreenSage- I visited over April break, to kinda see if I wanted to apply. Everyone was generally nice, but I just didn’t get a good vibe from it. Just my opinion though haha
Ahhhhhhh I’m already kinda starting to freak out, not that I’ve gotten an interview or anything hahaha. OMG that’s nerve-wracking… did he say what the essay is on?

@GreenSage, thank you. Well, it was worse than writing an essay in the interview my daughter went to at Oxford University. She was given some laboratory equipment and reagents and asked to design an experiments there on the spot, in front of two Oxford University professors!

@texaspg, my son has applied to Robert Morris and had his interview on the phone yesterday, with four interviewers (the admission counselor, two biology and one physics professors). It is a cooperative program with Drexel and Allegheny General Hospital. Looking at the hospital profile, this program is definitely better than either Muhlenberg/Drexel that works with Lehigh Valley General Hospital, or the Kean/Drexel cooperative program that works with St Peter’s Hospital, but all three not as good as Drexel/Drexel or Rosemont/Drexel.

@IMGDAD That sounds so stressful!! How’d she do?!

Son got the GAP invite today. He never submit any essay

Haven’t seen ONE Miami interview "YES"yet…? wassup with Miami?

@starlight27, yes it was extremely stressful because we had to fly to the United Kingdom on the last week of the Fall semester and she had to delay taking one of her final examination for a day or so. She was even asked to explain membrane action potentials by the second group of professors. She did not get an offer, but not surprising since the college she applied to at Oxford University usually only offer two places to read Medicine to international students.

@IMGDAD that sounds like such a wild experience! O.o
@starlight27, he said no one knows the essay topic until the day of. (I’m assuming it’s just one interview day? The one he told me was Feb 8th so we must all look to get interview notifications by then.)

Anyone going for the SBU UG interview? My son will have his on January 25, 2014. Apparently this is a SERIOUS UG interview since if chosen, the likelihood that GW will offer a place to go into the SBU/GW program is extremely high. @GreenSage, have you applied to the SBU/GW program?

@IMGDAD yes i applied, but I still have not heard anything from them. Someone on CC told me last week that they called SBU and the 2nd set of interview notifications will be going out soon.

Got rejection from University of Miami HPME by email

Got acceptance letter from NJIT Honors college, heard med school interview notifications are March

@IMGDAD, how did your son get notification of SBU interview - email or snail mail?

@docstudent, the interview invitation from SBU came in an email and then followed about one week after that with the letter that also included acceptance into the UG program and offer of a very substantial merit-based scholarship, and an additional $2500 just for being an applicant outside NY or Ohio!

Anybody apply/interest?

@Tropixx: One kid in my area got an interview, and he has pretty average scores/grades/hours (in relation to this applicant pool). His father has several connections at U Miami though… kinda frustrating. Idk what’s going on with them lol

@IMGDAD: That’s crazy. It’s insane that they put high school students through that.

@GreenSage: Wowwww I am totally gonna blank when/if I get to the interveiw stage. Timed essays are definitely not my fort

@starlight27, in relation to what IMGDAD stated, I personally know Oxford and they do not just accept international students right and left like Harvard. It’s a very very difficult process and quite different from the american system definitely. Plus, Oxford is one of the best universities to begin with. I’d equal it to an ivy league school in the US.

@GreenSage, you are correct. In addition to test scores, the students are also selected based on the results of the Biomedical Admission Test (BMAT) which is extremely difficult and challenging. The Oxford Medical School (a 6-year program) only accepts up to 8 international students a year. Funny enough, my daughter’s classmate in the BU SMED program also interviewed at Oxford and also was not offered a place. They both end up in the BU SMED program as classmates!

Did anyone apply to Lehigh/Drexel BS/MD? I mailed in the Drexel supplement before the November 15th deadline. But I haven’t gotten an email to pay the Drexel School of Medicine application fee yet. Did anyone hear back yet?
