University of Houston started the program this year (there is a group already admitted) and they do it by invitation only. I have communicated with the person in-charge and found the following information.

Need to apply by priority deadline.

Need a score of CR+M of 1400 or 32.

Need to get into honors college.

Once you get in, you get a request to join HBS (Honors biomedical sciences). You may get this request with lower scores.

This is followed by a request to apply to the 3/4 BS/MD program. It requires recs, personal statement etc. They are also ensuring that you have a rigorous science curriculum in high school.

If accepted, there is a requirement to complete MCAT with a score of 32 and maintain sciences GPA of 3.7 and overall GPA of 3.8.

The med schools are part of UT and they are setting higher standard in order to accept students from a non affiliated Texas college.

I checked UT Houston and their class averages are close.

2009
MCAT Average Score 32
Grade Point Average 3.7
2010
MCAT Average Score 30.9
Grade Point Average 3.74
2011
MCAT Average Score 31
Grade Point Average 3.73

MCAT requirement for Rice/Baylor scholars is new to me.
There may be in practice MCAT while in Rice but if there is an MCAT requirement, it’s not BSMD program. I rather take reular track (pre-med) if so.

that’s news to me as well. one has to be very patient if they choose the rice baylor route as the results dont come out until a week before the May 1 commit date!

FAQ 11. Will the MCAT be required of Rice/Baylor Scholars?
Yes, the MCAT will be required of Rice/Baylor Scholars who matriculate to Rice beginning the fall 2014.

Since it’s in Rice’s official website, it should be true. One thing noticed is that Rice didn’t indicate MCAT score requirement to be in Baylor medical school. If the score requirement is low enough, it’s worthwhile pursuing this rice/baylor program in order to avoid excessive MCAT prep during UG life.

Son going for his first BS/DO interview this week! If he gets admitted, even though he now prefers DO to MD after his shadowing experience with MDs and a DO, he can at least not be too worried anymore about whether he would get int a BS/MD program or not.

@Texaspg and 4beardolls, thank you. It is definitely cheaper than BU for undergraduate and he will definitely get a scholarship, between $5000-$15000 a year, and most likely be invited for the Fullride competition. If he wins the competition (10 places in total), he will get a fullride for the undergrad portion. He is obviously very pleased and he knows that if he does not get into BS/MD, he will have this to go to. If he gets into a BS/MD program, he will have difficult choices since he likes the Gannon campus very much and LECOM is very impressive and with good matchlist for residency programs in either osteopathic or allopathic programs.
