@Carpediem2424, yes, emergency medicine physicians do work a shift system. Although emergency medicine can be very interesting and a high energy medicine, emergency room physicians also have to deal with many trivial medical problems. Unfortunately, it does not provide for the opportunity to establish doctor/patient relationship that I love most. I am a hematologist/oncologist.

Have a question on SLU Medical Scholars program. I found some interesting statistics on the program. They admit around 100 to the program. 30% drop out of program by Sophomore year. 20% go to other med schools. About 47% continue to the SLU med school.

Advantages:
No MCAT min.
Assurance of being admitted on passing a med school interview and meeting program requirements.

Disadvantage:
No guaranteed admission.
The committee may turn down a candidate after the interview.
OK rated med school.
High tuition.

Is it better to do a premed program at a top 30 Undergrad school and try for an MD admission vs pursuing SLU? Any thoughts.

@BiomedFather, apparently someone posted a few years ago that she was in the program, got a GPA of around 3.8 and did not get a place after the med school interview. Her only feedback was that she “was not suitable for med school”. As a result, even though my son has been offered a sizeable UG scholarship and is still waiting for the decision, he has made up his mind that he is not going to accept, even if he has no other BS/MD offers. He would rather go to the BS/DO program. Our research seems to indicate a much higher drop out rate for the program.

So did you son get the UAB EMSAP interview?

@IMGDAD: Thanks. My son did not receive a call yesterday on EMSAP. I assume he did not make the cut.

@BiomedFather, I am sorry to hear that. We are out of town and so cannot check the voice mail in our home phone. Having said that, it appears that those who got the EMSAP interview also received an email. My son has not received any email, suggesting that it is most likely he did not get the interview either.

@IMGDAD
Good luck to your son on EMSAP. Hope he gets the call! My son got a decent scholarship at SLU also. His first choice is UofR REMS. He spent 2 summers at the UofR Biomed Eng department and fell in love with the campus. Cannot beat the proximity of Med School with UG campus. His stats are borderline for REMS (4.0 GPA, 65 college credits, associates degree in science as part of his HS program, <2100 SAT, hi 700 SAT II in bio/math2, EMT, local first aid squad member, clinical shadowing, karate instructor, CPR instructor) . He is a good candidate for a premed at UofR with a BME major.
In case he does not get a BS/MD my son is evaluating “low assurance” programs like SLU vs doing premed at a school like UofR.
Admit rate at good med schools are < 10%. If he gets SLU even with a 30% admit into SLU med school its 3x vs the premed route. My son will likely find SLU easy as he has already done college level core biology, chem, physics, math, anatomy/physiology as part of his HS program. Bit of a dilemma!

@BIomedFather, thanks for sharing. Your son’s stats are very good, compared to my son’s stats. I suspect he will get into a program better than the one at SLU. Good luck.

Any news on drexel/drexel interviews yet?

Has anyone out of state heard from UMKC about interviews yet?

shimmeringaway, we are out of state and my son got the UMKC interview, but his application was completed before October 15. If you complete your application after October 15, whether you are in state or out of state, you will hear towards the end of this month.

@IMGDAD. Thanks. That explains what they told my son when he called UMKC. He has a chance after all.

@IMGAD congrats to your son and thanks for the info!

Oh, also anyone who applied to Drexel/Drexel, have you been asked to pay the med school processing fee indicating that your application has been forwarded?

nothing from drexel yet except UG

Yes, it is kinda cutting it a bit thin when the interview is supposed to be as early as February 1!

We totally misread Drexel’s tuition rates though - soooo expensive.

@Midhelper, it is average for a private school. Union is a lot more expensive. The only way to get around this is to either get a good scholarship, financial aid, or to apply in-state to state schools. Last night I was looking a tuition for MD degrees and the cheapest are schools in Texas (whether in-state or out-of-state) while the average for most schools is around $50000 a year (the most expensive being $80000 a year in Michigan State University for its DO program!).

Does anyone know when Miami’s HPME interview date is?

I did a quick analysis on tuition cost for BS/MD assuming a typical 20K annual merit scholarship from private schools. Kean/Drexel for NJ in-state is cheapest followed by SLU.

@BiomedFather, thanks for the info. Those figures are rather scary, isn’t it? My daughter is in the BU SMED program and I think the 7 years (without any scholarship) will come to more than $500000!
