***Official Thread for 2014 BSMD applicants***

Anyone know if BUSM done with interview process ? or still coming ?

S got rejection from AMC for RPI and Union programs. They were sent minutes apart. He got into BS/DO at Nova Southeastern and I am wondering if anyone here can share their thoughts on that program.

@dadcolorado, sorry about the rejections from RPI and Union but congratulation for the offer from Nova Southeastern. This is a legit program and it is supposed to be one of the best DO programs in this country. If your son is okay with doing a DO degree, go for it. My son applied and decided to withdraw his application because he is hoping to go to the Northeast where we will be relocating to. If he does not get into any BS/MD program, he will go to the Gannon/LECOM BS/DO program. DO programs are gaining a lot more acceptance and interests in the last few years. Many people have the wrong impression of DO graduates. Many DOs specialize too, rather than staying in primary care.

@imgdad, thank you. My son decided to go to Nova, so I just wanted to get positive assurance. I guess I will be visiting Miami quite a bit in the next seven years. I learned quite a bit on this forum and am amazed at the support from everyone. I truly wish nothing but the best for everyone here.

@dadcolorado We visited Nova Southeastern over winter break. It’s not a large campus but they still toured us around on golf carts, it was nice. Campus is very clean. I didn’t realize that 75% of the students are graduate students so the feel of the school (to me) was more of a professional feel rather than a typical College. I didn’t thikn that UG students would get that typical college experience but my S doesn’t care for that so it doesn’t matter My S really liked it. When did your S have his interview?
Oh congratulations by the way!!

@Midhelper, Thank you. S had interview on 1/21 and admission letter was mailed on 1/28. We are waiting to receive the contract and program details mentioned in the letter.

Can someone give me more information on RPI/AMC program?
Is it worth it? Is it challenging? Positives? Negatives?

@collegeponderer I’m not sure I really understand what you are trying to find out. I am assuming you applied there?? If you did then at some point you must have thought it was worth applying for right? Something is making you doubt the school or program?? Have you been accepted to this program and another or maybe an amazing undergraduate school possibly? It’s tough to answer your question without knowing what it is your are driving at.

Challenging? That’s an RPI question. Without going to 2 different colleges can anyone truly answer that question accurately? As far as I know, all the students in my D’s year in the program are able to meet the 3.5 so far.
Positives? Guaranteed Med school with an UG at a very good science school.
Negatives? The cost. RPI is expensive.
Does that help at all?

@midhelper thanks for the response. I wasn’t all that clear. I have been accepted into that program but I am debating between that program and NEOMED. I wasn’t sure what the GPA requirement was and when I said, “is it worth it?” i meant is it worth dedicating the next seven years of my life there. I know I like research, I love research, but I also want a decent social scene and a college where tuition is not too expensive. Do they give decent scholarships there? If so, what do the scholarships look like? Right now I am leaning towards this program, however, NEOMED is 6 years and is only 3 hours away from my house. I do have family in Troy though. Do you know if they changed the GPA requirement to 3.6? How is your D dealing with the classes there? Does the school recommend taking easier classes in order to maintain GPA? Is it true that they deflate grades? I just want to clear a couple things up and want to really know if this is the place I want to go in the future.

As for research you can do that anywhere. RPI/AMC have special classes to prepare them to be better researchers but she’s not there yet so I can’t comment. Maybe someone who has been in the program longer can explain that.

As for scholarships, they have ranged from what I have read from 10K to 25K each year. If you have been accepted already you need to start calling financial aid and letting them know you need to know asap. THey take long.

GPA is still 3.5 as far as I know you should call to confirm.

Troy is a dump - can’t lie there - the city does not have anything to offer you. I think it offers lack of distraction. My D has taken day trips to NY city though for only $25.

She still has lots of friends though and is happy with the social scene.

The adviser is never going to recommend easier classes - how would that get you ready for med school? In fact he tells them to take the next level challenging class. If you use your AP Calculus grade you are required to take the next level calculus. You have to take at least one math at college level even if you have AP credit. Get out of AP Bio though - Bio is rough at RPI - long story there. I think RPI is known for grade deflation but it’s not like you get a 90 and they give you an 86. It’s more like their expectations are high. Some classes you don’t have to take final if you have an A in the class, some classes let you drop one bad test. I felt like they were very accommodating.

Your better source of information for this sort of thing would be the students themselves. Get on their FB page.

My D loves it there and we are ecstatic that she is in this program. We loved Albany because the students there looked like they were not stressed and were having a good time. We were touring just as one of the classes got out and they were all milling in the hallway laughing, talking. We have toured other med schools where there was no smiling going on whatsoever. It was a totally different feel. We have always instilled collaboration in our kids so the cut throat mentality doesn’t jive well with us.

I know absolutely nothing about NEOMED - sorry.

You are lucky you have these options available to you. Good luck in deciding and congratulations!!! Did yo interview for Union as well?

Hey has anyone on here heard of a more specific date for the notification of the UMKC SOM decisions?

Has anyone heard back from RMU about the Drexel program?

Hi!
I am currently in the Kean/Drexel BSMD from Long Island, NY. You might remember me from the interviews.
If you you are considering Kean and worrying about dorming, I am looking for a female roommate maybe possibly 2. I live right by campus that a school trolley picks you right in front of the complex. It is super safe! Message me for info!
Good luck to everyone!

Is anybody here considering the Medical scholars program at FAU?

Is there anyone who has received admission to Lehigh/Drexel BS/MD ?

Has anyone heard back from the Sophie Davis Program? Past discussions from previous years got notifications around this time.

Others UG schools applied t (decision): UC San Diego (Accepted), UC Berkeley (Accepted), Duke (WL), Harvard (rejected), UCLA (WL)
Decision: RPI/AMC Physician Scientist Program

Reflection: Alright, so clearly I applied to many schools. Here are the schools I was pissed about not getting in: UC,
Case Western, VCU, Villanova, and second Baylor. I was the most angry at UC. I did 3 years of research there and
attended a very selective program at the college, yet I did not even have the chance at an interview where I know I would have been successful due to my amazing success at mini med interviews (NEOMED, UMKC, OSU BMS). I am over it now because I was accepted into a far more prestigious program, RPI/AMC. Many people may be wondering why I did not accept Miami HPM, and let me tell you why. That program requires a 32 MCAT, 3.7 maintained GPA, and I did not receive at least 3/4 tuition. Also (and this is weird lol) I dont really like hot weather. Now I rejected both 6 year programs because UMKC was not worth it to me and NEOMED was too close to home as well as too rigorous and other factors. I did not choose OSU BMS, although not a BSMD program it is essentially one, because I did not want to go to OSU simple as that. Duquesne and W&J to me were worthless. Pretty simple choice in my opinion. SLU didn’t really offer too many benefits.

Things I should have done but don’t regret: more hospital volunteering, and studying for school more and limiting my ECs a bit more

Overall the application process was hell. The decisions were completely random. Simply put my resume wasn’t great enough to succeed into higher rated schools. I am EXTREMELY happy however that I was accepted into RPI’s program and am ready to face the challenges up ahead. Now both my sister and I will graduate to med school at the same time. She will graduate from Pitt GAP and I will from RPI Dual.

TIPS for future classes:
1.) Really show your passion for medicine. If you are not set on becoming a doctor, don’t waste your time.
2.) Understand that you will get a lot of rejections, SO APPLY TO A LOT OF SCHOOLS
3.) APPLY TO A LOT OF SCHOOLS
4.) At interviews, AlWAYS dress professionally
5.) Never skip an interview UNLESS you know you don’t want to go there or you can’t afford the trip in which case you can always call the institution
6.) Work on essays over summer because there are a lot of them. Keep them interesting.
7.) please PM me for questions, I dont come on that much, but will be happy to help

P.S. Every program is a great one, but it has to fit you.

@collegeponderer Congrats on so many acceptances! But maybe this should go in the results thread ;)

Okay, I have my final choices:
• UMKC - 6 year program (regional pool)
• Neomed - 6 year program (out of state)
• University of Oklahoma Medical Humanities Scholar Program – 8 year program (out of state)
• IIT/Midwest BS/DO program - 8 year program
I live in Chicago suburbs. Any advice on choosing between these programs would be great.
