***Official Thread for 2017 BSMD applicants***

neomed is removing the 6 year program, but keeping the 7 for 12 students next fall

Also does Penn State have program of its own? Doubt it. They have this partnership with Thomas Jefferson Sidney Kimmel, a separate private university 3 hrs away from Penn State. Penn State’s own facility at Hershey doesn’t have a bs md program. Btw, Drexel will still have 8 yr. program next year, for those that may be interested.

@rk2017 Penn State is a combined BSMD program with Thomas Jefferson Sidney Kimmel. 3 years at Penn State, 4 at TJSK. It is an undergrad feeder school so it should have been on the same line as TJSK, and not given its own line

People who get into BS/MD are highly qualified kids who have worked hard to get there. People who worked at applying and did not make it are also highly qualified kids who know what they are doing. Some of this focus carries over during undergrad ensures they can be successful when they apply to medical schools. In some cases, their undergrad school choices can be detrimental to their GPA making it look like they did not do as well. Sometimes they are pressured by parents in high school to concentrate on medicine but do lose interest while in college which may contribute to them not making it to medical school.

I personally know two kids over past 7 years who declined NU HPME to attend Stanford and did make it into the number 1 and 2 ranked medical schools after undergrad. I know one who declined Stanford to go to NU HPME and is going through harvard hospitals for residency and fellowship. I strongly believe the success in all those anecdotes belongs to the kid, not the school.

Each year, Stanford has about 650 kids showing up claiming to be premeds. About 150 apply after 4 years although actual numbers show 300+ which usually includes many after 5th year, 6th year or sometimes longer since AMCAS lists undergrad affiliation in their statistics for colleges. As we can see this is far short of 650 in freshman year who intended to be doctors. Many find other choices that appeal to them because Stanford is constantly telling them to explore their interests.

@rk2017 Drexel ended up axing all their affiliate programs. They still have the same amount of seats in the BA/MD program as before, or so their admission officer says.

@grtd2010, can you kindly share what is the source of this information? Is it in public domain or needs paid membership? Sorry if you shared this info earlier, I am new here.

In the meantime, I had the figures checked for a sampling of the fabulous four - those on times higher rating list and also offer the bs md program. These are from a paid premium site and so I trust they must be recent. They don’t have the new MCAT figures though.

Here is another set of ratings for Medicine, filtered by U.S. Not to be overwhelmed, but it is better to cross check across multiple sources to reduce subjectivity and to identify trends. You may want to filter by location and country United States:

@Empire007 & @grtd2010 - is the order of the schools in the list you posted relevant in any way? They don’t seem ordered by MCAT score or GPA or LizzyM score, so wondering if they are ordered by ranking.

@Mom22DDs I tried to create this list manually- almost ordered by LizzyM score (You can put in excel sheet and order it). DD wanted to know the various options and targets for GPA/MCAT in UG.

Wow! Thank you @grtd2010 for sharing the data.

wow, Vandy is stats heavy!

@grtd2010 Why is Wash U not included? Thanks

Pardon my ignorance about this Lizzy whatever, but find it funny that Stanford did not even make it to “top 10” and Harvard barely did

@rk2017 - schools like Harvard and Stanford do not go just by scores for admission, and thus you’ll see a bigger spread of their GPA/MCAT, and thus a lower LizzyM score. The list is not a ranking of top schools, it is just a list of schools ordered by LizzyM score.

And UCSF in the middle of the pack … really?
