Official Thread for AP Art History- 2010

Typical AP thread, questions, suggestions, review, anything pertaining to AP Art History.

This thread is both for self-studiers and people taking the class (I fall in to the former category, btw).

For art history, I'm using the 12th edition of Gardner's Art Through the Ages, The Annotated Mona Lisa, and the Barron's prep book.

Im taking the APAH exam as well. We use Stockstad’s Art History, 2nd edition. I plan on getting the Annotated Mona Lisa and some prep books. How far are you guys? We barely finished Early Christian/Romanesque/Gothic before break.

I just started a few days ago and have only finished paleolithic and neolithic art. I plan to read about 15 pages a day and will be done at the beginning of April, leaving enough time to read both Barron’s and The Annotated Mona Lisa.

When you finally get some prep book, _daniel, I recommend Barron’s. I actually prefer it to The Annotated Mona Lisa.

Wow WannaBYalie, you have a lot of discipline!

Haha, well… I have goals, I’ll say that much  And I can usually make a pretty good plan as to how I will achieve those goals. But as far as actually following through with them… there I sometimes fall short  Believe it or not, I am a HUGE procrastinator. But on the plus side I decided a month ago that I would no longer procrastinate and have yet to do so :D

Is it possible to study with just the Barron’s book?

Some claim so I’ve heard, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend it. I’d try to get a textbook on ebay or abebooks (unfortunately you’re international though, so shipping will be so expensive).

Yeah, I know a website which has free shipping and takes only a week or so to arrive.

But, there are so many versions that I don’t know which one is the correct Gardner’s Art Through the Ages.

I might get the annotated Mona Lisa though. It’s about $19.

You are so right, I had an immensely hard time finding the Gardner’s book. I finally settled on the 12th edition and am happy with my purchase.

And free shipping within two weeks! That’s an amazingly good deal, as long as the book prices themselves aren’t super expensive. They sound reasonable though, as I got my copy of The Annotated Mona Lisa for about the same price, including shipping.

So which book is the best overall, for self-studying? And is this even as much of a self-study exam as, say, AP Human Geo?

No, this exam is not nearly as easy as AP HumanG. It will require much more work, and there’s a ton more info to memorize.

For the best prep books:

The Annotated Mona Lisa
Barron’s AP Art History
12th edition of Gardner’s Art Through the Ages

Those are the books I’m using and they are pretty good. In addition, they’ve gotten a lot of positive reviews from other CCer’s and lots of people report getting 5’s on the exam from reading Gardner’s.

I am dropping the class after this semester (just a two more weeks… uhgh)

Does anyone know where I can find vocabulary sheets/notes for the various art ‘eras’?

Edit: We also use Stockstad 2nd Edition (a rambling piece of mess… it explains history well, but the inspirations behind specific pieces of art is minimally or not @ all explained!)

Does anyone know where I can find a really, really good Gothic Era notes!? I have a test in the next few days, so I need a good note sheet to study off of. Anyone?

Hey guys!!! I need help acing the class. I’m horrible with those tests… I’ve been getting C’s on them. My highest yet score was a B+ but I still don’t have an A in the class. I need the A more than anything! Can I use the prep ap Ap art history books during the school year, so when I have a test, I can look through them? Has anyone done it beofore? Would it help? (btw I don’t need the prep book for the exam in may, but for the school year)
