Official UC Irvine Fall 2017 Transfer Applicant Thread

Look like decent stats to me Bill, if your Fall gpa is 3.33 then the follow up Spring gpa might be even higher, and that is important. It’s a better gpa than I applied with. Good ECs, you are getting statements reviewed… Look like a good candidate to me, finish strong at your cc and I think UCR is in the bag as back up.

UCR?

Yeah UC riverside… You can get in with a lower gpa than UCI

@ericpanda999 you are incredible!!! From what I’ve heard from friends attending UCI and UCLA, you definitely are more than a competitive applicant. Best of luck to you at whichever institution you choose!

@wavygravy I spoke to a UCI rep last week when they visited my school’s college fair and ask a similar question about switching majors because I, too, want to pursue bio but plan to apply as public health. They told me that after you get accepted, you would have to talk to the dean of the department, in this case bio, about your switch because it usually is a case to case basis whether or not they’ll let you change majors once accepted.

@futureanteater97 Hi! I saw that you were interested in to switching to Bio major and I, as a person applying as a Bio major, was wondering if you finished all the major prereqs for your current Public Health major or did you finish prereqs for bio as well? Or do the classes overlap? I just talked to my counselor at my CC today and I just found out that if we do not finish the major prereqs for bio majors, they will most likely reject us. For example, I noted in my TAG application as well as my regular UC application that I won’t be able to finish Organic Chemistry until the Summer before Fall 2017, however the UCI rep said that they require all bio majors or bio-related field majors to finish the full series/year of Biology, General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry by Spring 2017. So I’m not sure if you switch after you get accepted that they will void that requirement and let you take it at the UC or not let you transfer due to the major prereq requirement for transferring. I’m freaking out since I really want to go to UCI but because of not being able to finish one class of Organic Chemistry that it might void my application for UCI but idk maybe if the demand for this cycle is enough, they might allow me to finish Summer Quarter and accept me anyway but I don’t know X_X :frowning:

Hi, I’ve tagged to UCI under as an Art major, but I’m beginning to think I should have applied under Psychology (I know, I’m a fool :-/ ). Please chance me!

Major: Psychology
Transferable GPA: 3.67 (so far, still in progress)
Major GPA: 4.0 (so far, still in progress)
ECs: Volunteer teacher/youth group leader on saturdays for the past 5 years.
Schools applied for: UCLA (under psych), UCI (under psych), UCSB (under art)

Personal Statements: Have not started

Should I play it safe and stick with art or just risk it and apply as Psych for UCI???

I don’t know what to suggest for using art as backup, what about psychology and social behavior as backup? I think you have good stats and with decent personal essays I can’t imagine them rejecting you

What is the difference between Psychology and Social Behavior and general Psychology? In terms of study

Still deciding whether or not to apply as a mathematics major vs a computer science major, however I scheduled a meeting with a UCI Rep.
As far as the personal statements go, how in depth should I go? Should I make it more personal or lean a little towards the formal side? Does the UCI rep look them over or not?

General psychology is old school, geared towards making you into a researcher in the field. A regular psych grad ideally goes on to get into a PhD program ( bout 5% admit rate on avg) and you work in a university conducting research, or go after a clinical license and become a psychologist. You spend more time focusing on some tough classes like a series of stats courses, chemistry, biology, neuro. It’s all interesting stuff, but it’s not for everyone.

Psychology and social behavior shares many of the same requirements of gen psych, but intro to stats is as far as math goes, and there are lower division requirements like any psych degree. PSB has an upper division series that makes it appealing to me because it is applicable to a research career but especially a clinical career. Like I in positive psychology, clinical psych, and human sexuality right now, all of which are useful to me for applying in the field.

Bottom line in my opinion, you wanna do research and work in academia go general psych. You want to work as a psychologist, an MFT, MSW, Counseling psych, etc then PSB is the better choice.

My rep looked it over. I tried to find a classy mature way to discuss my personal history, had to explain a lot of old bad grades. I say it’s a mix, if possible.

this was very helpful, thank you so much!!

@seokminnie0218 Hi! I have finished IGETC and by the end of Fall, I should have a 3.4-3.7 GPA depending on what I get in Ochem haha but I will have finished my bio and gen. chem and ochem sequences by spring '17. I am most likely going to apply to UCI as a psych major and my alternate will be public health policy since the majority of my major oriented classes overlap; for the most part, I got my bases covered! But thank you for the message! Best of luck to you and your future endeavors!

@anelco Hi! If you TAGed to UCI as an art major, DO NOT change your major on your application for UCI to psych. A UC rep as well as my transfer counselors have warned us that by having a major different from the one you TAG with, your application can be voided. If you truly want to do psych, get into UCI as an art major and talk to the department’s dean! But do not, do not, do not apply as Psych Major if you have tagged as anything otherwise!!!

@futureanteater97 oh no, seriously?! I thought that if i applied as a different major from what i tagged as, only my TAG application would be voided?

@anelco I would definitely talk to a transfer counselor; I’m not sure which one gets voided :frowning:

Major: Mathematics
UC Transferable GPA: 3.0
Major GPA: 3.44
EC’s: Work part time
Tag’d to UCSC and am applying to other UC’s as well
I’ll have all the math courses completed by spring, but I’m missing the science requirements like physics and chem. Im on a upward grade trend and am trying to explain that with the personal statements

I have a question and I need some advice as to what I should do. I talked to both my community college counselor as well as a UCI rep while they were here at a college fair and I was asking them about my chances of getting into Biological Sciences even though I indicated on my application (both TAG and regular) that I would not be able to finish Organic Chemistry until Summer. They said that most likely both my TAG and regular app would be voided for not being able to finish Organic Chemistry by Spring but there is a slight chance depending on the cycle if they would allow for an exception. I asked the UCI rep what I should do and she said a good alternate major would be Public Health since it doesn’t require Organic Chem to be finished by Spring and it overlaps with the requirements for Bio but I also have an interest in Chemistry more than Biology now and those requirements overlap with Biology as well. So should I switch and put Chemistry/Public Health as my main major to apply with, knowing already TAG is being voided because of not finishing requirements on time? Or should I just put Biological Sciences on my regular app too just to be consistent with TAG but knowing I would be voided/rejected anyway for the same reason? HELP PLZ ;^;

West Valley College (Semester system)

Major: Business Administration (hoping for a concentration in Accounting)

transferable GPA: 4.0
major GPA: 4.0

IGETC: will be done by Spring 2017 (Need one more art class in winter and a physical science in spring)
Major: will be done in Spring 2017 (Need managerial acctg in spring and Math 3B - Calc II in spring)

ECs: In HS: Leo’s Club (cleaned up park and helped w/ XMas party for the blind), NHS tutor, and did Relay for Life for a video game club. In College: N/A (I know this is bad). I run a YouTube movie review channel, but I only have 12 public videos. I focus on older movies b/c it’s more expensive to keep watching new movies every week at the theater.

Schools applied for: Will apply to SJSU and Cal Poly SLO. For UC: Irvine, Davis (tagged for Econ, didn’t realize there was Managerial Econ b/c I tagged last minute), and maybe Berkeley for Econ (I don’t qualify for Haas b/c I only got a 3 for AP English Lang, which doesn’t count for Engl 1A at Berkeley but it’s fine at a CCC). I will also apply to UH - Manoa.

Personal Statements: Haven’t done them yet b/c I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go to a UC. I will answer the creative question w/ my movie review experience in HS newspaper and YouTube. I will also answer the educational opportunity question w/ taking my senior year at a community college. I will probably answer the unique question (#7) in some way.

Do I need to have a great essay or will my GPA cut it for Business and possibly Davis for Managerial Econ? Also, how much do Spring 2017 grades matter? Does anyone mind chancing me?

Also, will I have to take English 1A equivalent at UC Irvine b/c of my AP Score of 3 for English Lang? I’m not sure if I would be qualified for admission, but I know I would have IGETC done in spring.
