Official UC Irvine Fall 2017 Transfer Applicant Thread

@TheLongRun your GPA looks great but I wouldn’t solely rely on it (although you are most likely to get admitted to most of the schools you will apply to since it is so high) and yeah touch upon the creative side from your Youtube videos and such  Spring grades don’t matter as much in a sense that they are only checking if you are getting at least a passing grade for your required courses for transfer but with your record I’m sure you don’t have that problem but it kind of looks bad that if you are doing well all this time and the suddenly plummet but they wouldn’t resend your admission because of that. Fall grades matter the most since we update them in January, when applications are still under view but otherwise as long as you are passing (and if you are accepted as UCD TAG) that you are meeting the minimum requirements  Also, I’m not 100% sure about this but UCs do give you unit credit for getting a 3 on the AP exam but it does not exempt you from taking the course unless you received a 4 or higher. . .I hope that helps and good luck! I hope you get into the schools you want

@seokminnie0218 Thank you for your input. I’m just hoping for at least a B in Calc next spring and I hope I can handle my online Business Law class. The online format will need some getting used to.

Good luck with your applications! You do volunteer at a hospital, and your EC w/ medical club helps, in spite of what you say is a low GPA for Bio. I don’t know the competitive GPA for Bio, but a 3.5 is pretty good. I mean, I realize you have to take or have taken Anatomy, MicroBio, Physio, and maybe Chem and O-Chem, and those are no joke classes. I hope you write a great essay, since your outside of school experiences will help.

In short, your ECs and essay would probably boost you, despite your concerns about the GPA. However, I saw in your post that you’re going for UCLA and UCSD, so those are going to be the tough ones. For the rest of the UCs, I think you should have a good shot. I can’t say for the CSUs, since they’re impacted. I’m not familiar w/ their requirements for bio or health sciences.

Also, I just saw your concern regarding your pre-req in O-Chem. I would definitely call this UC Irvine phone number: (949)-824-6703. (Moderators, please don’t block this post. This is a legit UC Irvine number. I’m from the Bay Area, so I don’t know any Irvine numbers.) These people helped me with my concerns about my English score yesterday, and they said that I wouldn’t get rejected right off the bat. English isn’t a pre-req at Irvine, compared to how Berkeley will treat it as a pre-req for Haas. Call the number and ask them your question and tell them about your concerns. If it’s indeed voided, call to be sure they don’t throw out your application due to the major not matching up. I think you could pick an alt. major for Irvine, but like I said, call them. Also, have assist.org up while you’re telling them of the majors you’re thinking of picking, so you have something to refer to when explaining. They’re really nice, since it’s a student working and advising you.

@TheLongRun Thank you so much! Omg that has been so helpful thank you! Yeah I’ve checked on assist about the courses outlined and it says to finish before transfer but didn’t specify if it had to be done by spring but apparently the UCI rep that was called during my counselor meeting said that it had to be done by spring regardless. I got my UCI TAG notification today and the message was very vague so I’m not sure if it was rejected or not but I’ll try calling and see where that leads me  Thank you so much! And I wish you do well with your online classes  Usually online classes aren’t that hard unless it is a Math or demanding subject that requires a lot of self-teaching  Good Luck and thank you again!

Will I be less competitive if I complete Bus Calc instead of Calc 1&2?

@haroldstran I’d say yes, you would be less competitive because they want Calc I & II. If you’re business admin, the probably won’t like that technically missing pre-req. Assist.org doesn’t list Applied Calculus as an equivalent. If business calc was a 2 semester or 2 quarter sequence, then you probably would be ok. I’m assuming that you took Applied Calc though, which is 1 semester or 1 quarter. You could always call the UC Irvine transfer admissions phone number to check.

EDIT: Looking at your stats from the thread, I’d say that your military experience and redemption may counteract the missing math pre-req. Don’t take my word for sure though. I mean, who knows what admissions would truly do, since you have a unique story.

Veterans are loved by all institutions, as it should be, thank you for serving our great country.

Hello there, Folks…Long time follower, first time posting

Chance me please?

Transfer Fall '17

GPA 3.6

Major: Informatics

IGETC: completed by end of Fall '16
(pending foreign language)

7 Ws (UC/Cal State overlook, however I did brief on it on my app.)

Transcripts from 4 CA community colleges (UC/Cal State overlook, however I did brief on it on my app.)

Non-traditional student
(non-working adult in 30s who began college later than most)

*Assist states there is a requirement for a min. of one year computer science courses. I will have three computer science courses completed by end of Spring '17. The one (of three) I am taking this semester (Fall '16) is transferrable, however, there are no articulations as it is a pre-req for the 2 im taking in Spring '17 which do articulate.

  • Will I be considered to have met the requirement on Assist?

THANK YOU!!

Good luck everyone!

ALSO- I should mention…

*As an alternate,l major, I clicked on Data Scienc (which is within the same school as Informatics). The directions said this would be how to intend for a double major. I will not have the transfer requirements for Data Science completed until after the hypothetical transfer. I may not even want to end up double majoring in Data Science.

  • Considering how I marked the majors on my app, will this hurt my possibility of getting accepted just as an Informatics major?
  • How impacted is this major? I know Co Sci and Data Science are very competitive, but I have found very little info. on the transfer profile for just the Informatics transfers.

Thanks again!

Following link has past years acceptance numbers by majors and percentage. This is official stat from UCI. I hope this will help you guys to visualize your chances. Good Luck!

Major : Psychology
GPA : 3.84 - 3.9
Units Completed : 47 units
Pre-rep: Completed in the Spring
IGTEC: Completed in the Spring
Activities :

  • Internship at a non-profit organization
  • Working at a retail store (15 hours/week)
  • Coordinator of a project
  • Volunteer at Hospital
  • Tutoring
  • High School Activites (Vice-President/Board member of two clubs)

Please chance me for UCI. I also have some questions:

  1. I will be taking 15 units in the spring. Would UC look down on my application if I have not completed 60 units by the Fall ?
  2. How important are Personal Statements compare to your grade and pre-rep ?
  3. For those who already transferred to UCI, did you adjust quickly or well to the workload of a 4-years university ?
  4. I am applying to only 4 schools : UCLA, UCI, UCR, UCM. Do you guys think I should apply to more schools just to be safe ? (UCI is my top choice)

I say you have a great chance of getting in, probably in the bag. 1st, your 15 units question …You are applying now, this fall, for entry in Fall 2017. Applications are to be updated at the end of this semester with your Fall 16 grades, but you are not required to have 60 units done until Spring 17 I believe. I had as many units done as you do when I applied last fall. You will need to have completed all required courses as they appear in ASSIST or your TAG contract by Spring 17, and those Spring 2017 grades will be assessed when you send in your transcripts. You can check on ASSIST to see exactly what is required http://www.assist.org/web-assist/welcome.html. Go on UCTAP and fill in your planned future spring semester and what you plan to take, they will take a look at that when reviewing your application I believe. 2nd, Personal statements matter to UCI from what I understand, I know they made a difference in my case, they help admissions to see you as more than just a GPA, I dunno about pre-rep and grade. I suggest you go to your transfer center and meet with a UCI rep to go over your situation, and if possible have your personal statements reviewed by a tutor. 3rd, I’m in the psychology and social behavior major and the first quarter is wrapping up now. I suggest you look into the PSB program. The PSB program can still get you into grad school for clinical psych or any masters programs like MFT, MSW, LPC etc. PSB is easier than regular psychology in that you aren’t required all the math classes, and as much science type stuff. The PSB requires an internship at the end of the program and is in the school of social ecology. I suggest that you at least look into it and consider switching your major to it if you are interested in clinical work, or at least setting it as your alternate major if you aren’t accepted into the regular psych program. PSB is more based on clinical type work, you wanna be a therapist or something go with PSB, if you really are into research and want to go into academia for a career than stick with regular psych, and use PSB as alternate. I took 3 classes for my first quarter instead of 4 like UCI suggested while also taking a few classes for a different AA at my CC. Now, I was careful about who I took, used rate my professor to get some idea about the class. There are only so many PSB professors, I’m sure the psychology department is the same way, so no matter what you will get stuck with some who will be more challenging than may be necessary for you to learn, or who are screwy in some other way. The assignments and tests are the same as they were at my CC, except that here at UCI I have way less prep time for tests and to write. I have done really well so far, but the pace is faster and can be challenging depending on what you have to accomplish. Most psych classes offer some extra credit, usually about 5% of your grade through some easy tasks like participating in research for an hour, or attending a campus event, or even showing up to class gets you some points. You will be just fine so long as you A) learn to manage your time and be disciplined, B) … well actually there is not B or C or D, just seriously list out what you have to get done for the week and organize your time down to the hour, you will do fine. I actually plot out two weeks on an MS paint page and type out on each day what I have to accomplish in reading and actual work. I always take my syllabus and go to the section where it says what is due on each class date and what reading should be done by then, when exams are, and I make a list every semester/quarter on ms notebook of each individual assignment and its due date. As the quarter moves forward I input the grade I received and can track what I have yet to accomplish. It just helps more than anything to be organized, and having the MS paint schedules lets me move things around, swap out an assignment planned for a different day that week etc. No matter what I never have any surprises, and normally I get my stuff done ahead of time and its quality work. Most classes wont have a ton of busy work, most will be a few papers, a mid term and a final. You will still cover just as much material in a quarter as you cover in a semester at the CC, I know that sounds insane, but it’s not as bad as it sounds. I suggest when you look for what classes you want to take if you get into UCI that you go onto your EEE page and look up the websites for classes you plan to take, you can sometimes see old syllabuses and see how the classes are structured under different professors. Bottom line, it’s very similar to the CC level work, just that it’s with a little less study time and work time. One cool thing is that half my classes test online, so that means that you can use study guides for your tests, but they are timed in such a way that you still have to study. The tests are often MC, some have short answer. Some professors I hear want you to break out a blue book and write them a novel, but you can avoid this if you research your professors ahead of time and check out prior course websites. If you dislike a class at least it’s over a little quicker in a 10 week quarter. 4th, your question about where to apply. You have a very high GPA and will be a competitive applicant no matter where you apply, and if you are a decent writer then your personal statements and ECs, use of TAG will further ensure that. You have excellent ECs btw… I say you apply with TAG to UCI, UCLA, UCSD, and UCB. I don’t know what your financial situation is, but if you are broke enough the UCs will pay for 4 applications for you. If you aren’t broke, this is your one chance to apply to schools so do it and do it right. If you are willing to go all the way up to UCM, why not UCD ? If UCD why not UCB ? if you will go to UCI, why not UCSD ? I think if I had applied to UCLA I would have gotten in, and I wish I had, just cause it would have been nice to know. I would have still stuck with UCI, but it would have been cool. Now, maybe you would choose UCLA over UCI, I dunno it’s a great school I wouldn’t blame you necessarily, we have different reasons for choosing the schools we choose. I say apply at UCB, UCLA, UCI, UCSD at least. If you add something onto that then add UCD or UCR because they have a decent psych program, but UCB has a legendary psych program. Also, unless it’s too late, apply to the CSUs ! remember, you can still get into grad school and do research if you attended a CSU instead of a UC. Good luck, please check out the reddit page for UCI, and let the group know how you did. Bottom line, yes I think you will get into UCI for both psychology and psychology & social behavior majors if you keep your GPA this high after this semester and through spring.

Thank you, @BackNSchool83 !
I actually have been following your posts since last year and using a lot of your advices. It is nice to have someone who has been through the processes here since I am very clueless about the transferring processes. I was worried that not having a lot of units before applying does not look very good. Thank you for assuring me !
About personal statements, I have been having a hard time putting my experiences and stories into words. I am afraid that 8 days are not enough to write good personal statements. However, I would definitely try to make an appointment with a UC rep before the deadline.I am not sure if it is too late.
PSB was actually my first choice but I switched to Psychology because I actually enjoy the science and math aspects of it. But PSB sounds so interesting. I am not sure yet.
I have been debating between UCLA and UCI but UCI wins every time. I talked to my friends from UCI and attended some lectures at UCI.I really like the school and the city. And UCI is such a laid-back school. I can imagine studying there. I am actually pretty broke so I might only be able to add one or two more schools. Maybe UCSD and CSULB. What do you think of CSULB? I do not mind whether it is UC or CSU.
I always got bad grade in high school. The only reason I do better in college is because I study so much more in college. I literally study 4-6 hours a day. I like the ideas of going to schools like UCB or UCLA but I do not think I will do well if I attend there. For now, UCI remains my number 1 and I really hope I would get into UCI.
By the way, are you planning to get involved in research at UCI ? From what you see, is it competitive to do research at UCI ?
Thank you so much !!

I think you will do fine wherever you go, you have a lot of motivation and it shows in your grades and what you are involved in. Go where you want to go and will be most comfortable. I feel a UCI degree in psych or PSB is going to be all you need as a ticket into grad school, they won’t care as much about where you got your BA. I say that cause psychology and PSB at the BA level are similar scross institutions I would imagine, once you get to the UCI level. Where you went to school is going to matter most when you apply for internships and jobs. Anyways, with personals I just tried to write a story that combined history, progress, and my goals. If you don’t have time to see a rep see a counselor, or tutor to review them, or if you are confident then press forward with what you have. I like UCI,it’s a beautiful campus, and I’m a photographer so I really enjoy the place. Actually if you go on google maps, a lot of the pictures of UCI that you can see when you click different buildings, and the 360 degree photospheres are mine. If you are into science and math and research then that is raw awesomeness and you will fit in well in any program. I have a GED by the way, so high school didn’t go so great for me either. I bet you get in, and as for research, there is plenty of it. Yes it is competitive in some cases, but you will be successful if you go after it as a primary goal. If you just wander into a interview to be an RA with shorts and flip flops on you will think uci is super hard to find research positions at. If you come well groomed, dressed like you were interviewing for a corporate position, and carry yourself like the student and adult you truly are today, I bet you will nab those spots no prob. I’m a research participant often, but I am not conducting research this quarter because my extra time is being spent interning in substance abuse conseling. Now then for CSUs I was looking mostly at CSUF and CSULB, both of which I was accepted to. CSULB waitlisted me initially though. I think applications are closed, but they may have Spring enrollment still open, not sure either way. Good luck, and again I think you have a good shot. If you are ever planning to visit campus and want to meet for a coffee pm me.

What if a major doesn’t require a transfer applicant to complete pre-Reqs before applying? Is that OK? This would be for film and media studies, and on assist.org, it says an applicant does not need to have completed pre-Reqs.

Yes it is ok for the pre reqs not to be completed at time of application, all required classes have to be done by Spring I believe, maybe the end Summer session. I would take what it says at face value. If the matriculation agreement does not include that certain pre reqs be completed when you transfer then you should be fine. If you can tell me exactly what you mean it would help, tell me your CC and I’ll look on ASSIST if you want. In my case, my major required a course in criminology be completed to transfer, however, my school did not offer the course and so the matriculation agreement said I didn’t have to take the class. What then happens is I still have to take it at UCI. So please give me more specifics and I will try to help out in clarifying the agreement. You can PM me if you don’t want that info on this thread. The other thing you can do, is call the counseling office for the school you are applying for at UCI. I made an appointment with my schools counseling office, they asked if I was a student and I told them I was going to be transferring and they still met with me and clarified my questions. IGETC is bad ass, highly recommend it.

Hey 2017 UCI Hopeful Cohort… Here is the complete list of acceptances reported on College Confidential for UCI from the Fall 2015 applicants. This will take up half a page, but it should be on this thread somewhere so you can see when to expect to start hearing back… then again UCI might be different this year in how they do things, you never know.

Also for anyone applying as a psychology social behavior major, I have an interesting idea for you to bat around as you are admitted. You can earn a BA in Criminology Law and Society by only taking two more classes than you would need to take for the BA in PSB. That means over 2 years you take 3 classes your first quarter, 4 classes for 3 quarters and 5 classes for 2 quarters for 2 BAs ! Not bad, think I’m gonna do it, in fact I can’t not do that lol.

Did anyone have trouble separating their paragraphs on the application? When I save and submit, all my words just get compacted together…
