@cheemu you have to check your portal…
@YZamyatin When you say “over 90% of CS apps are ENG first choice”, it means CS or CompE or both?
@PurpleTitan
I agree about non-academics, as you describe them, to a certain degree at a place like Illinois. I think they exaggerate the degree to which they have dispensed with their old formulas. But yeah, real quality work in CS or institutional need qualifications (various diversity etc.) will have an impact, I’m sure you are correct there.
Re CS+X, I think it is too soon to tell on the new majors. Very few entering students in the first year, and the school does not want students in a new major all trying to transfer out ( into ENG). So definitely they were picky last year and probably this year with the type of student accepted, as opposed to pure academic numbers.
But for Math and Stats I think the school is more comfortable letting second choice students fill spots, and especially so this year, specifically because they removed Comp E as a viable second choice option for CS applicants (too many Comp E’s trying to transfer to CS). So I guess I would qualify my statement by limiting it to just Math and Stats for now.
Incidentally, here are the enrollment numbers for the new +X’s as of last Fall (Spring numbers should be out soon)…
Chem - 15 students
Other three - 8 students each
With a sample so small I suppose avg ACT could be anywhere.
@longwait
He said 3300 CS apps earlier, and in most recent post that 3100 of those were to the College of Engineering. Nothing about Comp E
@YZamyatin - Is there any data out there on the CS in Eng yield?
The average ACT scores in LAS were 27-32. Should I assume them to be much higher for Math+ CS?
If the avg was ACT 33 for CS then what would roughly be it’s comparable SAT M+CR?
No idea about expected or historic yield on a per major basis. On a school-wide basis the numbers are pretty useless as they conflate first choice, second choice, no choice but they thought you might be a good fit, and DGS.
Hey guys!
I am an international applicant
I applied for CS+Math at LAS
My SAT is way too shitty, but I have a perfect GPA and great ECs. I even send them the certification for my research paper (which they accepted). what do you guys think my chances are ?
@Rag22304 What’s your SAT score (and math score) ? I’m international as well and my SAT is also weak (for CC standards at least).
Everyone who is worried about their stats, I think it’s important to remember it’s all out of our control now and we will know in 24 hours. I hope everyone gets in!!!
How can I even wait for 24(!!) hours
@meriks My SAT is not xtremely bad, but yeah, bad. Math score is decent though 780.
Using AVG as the term of measurement is really not good to use because you don’t know the outliers. If the Median and range were used instead those would at least give better information. Our high school last year told us that the lowest ACT to get into ENG (I don’t know what specific major) was a 29. The lowest ACT/GPA to get into UIUC period was 24 - no idea what School at Illinois that was. UT Austin is an awesome school.
It doesn’t matter what is ‘good’ to use; if you are working off limited data, you use what you have!
This entire exercise is just to ballpark chances to get a safe balance of schools to apply to. For this year’s applicants the exercise is just academic to pass the time; too late to be useful.
I would argue though that ‘range’ on the downside can be very misleading; you don’t know about hooks.
Do you think if I got in to University of Minnesota- Twin Cities which has a 44% acceptance rate that I should be worried about getting into UIUC which has a 63% acceptance rate? I feel like this means I should get in, but I still have this feeling I won’t.
I honestly believe you will be just fine! Your stats are above the AHS average

@carls2015 hey since decisions are out tomorrow I think you should try settling down and not worrying too much. Can’t do anything about your application at this stage.
Good luck
@carls2015 In my opinion, you should get in. I just recommend you remember this feeling and use it to your advantage. Hit the ground running when you start school in the fall. In 4 yrs you’ll be “stressing” over jobs…and I mean this in the most caring way. (It’s what I tell my own children.)
