@nagintapls @YZamyatin @nat97xo
Are all of you applying for CS ?
So basically with a 32, I’m not competetive! Is that the take away?
Because everything else is in place-Essays,EC’s and even grades.
Apprantly for Indians they only consider grade 10 marks in which I received a CGPA 10/10.
P.S I got in at UT for CS. That is giving me hope!
I am a parent of a CS applicant. With your 36 math score and great grades, I wouldn’t say “not competitive”, but there are less than two days left, so no point in dwelling now; good luck!
@PCMguy I’m not at all saying that you are not competitive. The AVERAGE is 34, meaning some of those top applicants scored 32s while some scored 36s. As long as you have some solid ECs and good course rigor/GPA, you will have just as good as a chance as anyone else.
Lol I’m really worried about my CS application. I have a 2240 and an IB predicted of 41/45 but no idea of what my GPA is. I had no idea that CS was that competitive!
@PCMguy, they’re certainly holistic. Outside of CS, though, since UIUC is pretty big, they’re just not extremely choosy (so a 32 ACT should be fine for a non-CS, and maybe non-CompE/EE major).
Since there are so many CS applicants for the number of CS slots available (far few CS slots than any one of MechE/bio/econ/psych), UIUC can afford to be much more choosy when it comes to CS applicants. That one Prof on Reddit was saying that they were rejecting CS applicants who were more qualified than the average admit to some other engineering majors.
BTW, @YZamyatin, you probably looked through last year’s results thread. I would say that academics aren’t the only factor they consider. Being URM, a girl, or already working/making money coding (or placing well in some CS competition) would give you a boost as well.
And there certainly could be a >2 point ACT difference between admits to CS in Engineering and CS in LAS. It seems that everyone piles on to CS in Engineering as their first choice with relatively few going for one of the CS+X majors (especially the newer ones) but I’m certain they’d prefer someone with an ACT of 26 but also a compelling story for why CS+anthropology makes sense for them and has the EC’s to back that up over someone with a 34 ACT who has CS+anthropology as their second choice but has not a clue why anthropology make sense for them.
Good luck err’body. I’ll post my stats regardless of if I get in so future applicants have a better idea of what to expect. This is about to be the most anticipated day of my life.
@PCMguy Congrats for UT admission. My son has applied for UT Austin Engineering and waiting for decision. Do you mind sharing some details on UT? Is it CS in CNS or Engineering? When did you apply and when you got the result? Thanks
@nat97xo thanks a lot. Best of luck for your decision.
@longwait20 thanks a lot.
Oh, CS is not a part of engineering. It is a part of the College of Natural Sciences.
From what I’ve heard, the last wave of admissions can be anytime this week, with Friday being the most predictable option, (as colleges prefer to release on a Friday so they can have a weekend before calls/emails start)
I applied a day before the deadline.
And was admitted day before!
I know I won’t get accepted into UIUC’s Eng CS, but I really want to get into the Math & CS in LAS. After reading the past few pages about CS, I’m getting nervous that I won’t even make LAS - which would be a disaster. 32 ACT, 35 Math and 31 science… good extracuriculars… with programming classes… high GPA and grades with good rigor. I just can’t see how I might not even get into LAS.
Good luck everyone (make sure to post your decision in the decision thread)!
Does someone who applies to LAS as their second choice have an equal chance of getting in as someone who applied LAS as their first choice? Or are those who applied there as their first choice given some sort of priority?
@nexusguy I remember reading this question on the official UIUC blog answered by an admissions counselor.
There’s no preference for anyone. First choice or second choice, you’ll have equal chances.
And as if on cue, our ever cooperative Prof on Reddit shares that 2014 entering freshman had an average of 33 on the ACT, so not up so dramatically as the hearsay would have us believe (I’m guessing accepted vs enrolled was the culprit).
So, that makes a little more sense. He has a lot more info, sorry, can’t link from my phone but have a look. Thread is ‘Questions about Computer Science’
Looks like over 90% of CS apps are ENG first choice.
