[] EC short answer: On the autism stuff. I like it, it explains it in more detail and gives its influence on me.
[] Common App Essay: I wrote about my social development. It was very personal and kind of hard to explain without actually showing it to you. I think very highly of it and it shows a part of me that is no where else on the application.
[] Optional Favorite Things Essay: I analyzed one of my favorite songs and why I like it so much. Not sure if that’s what they were looking for, I personally really like it.
[] Why Chicago: I broke it into three parts: community, learning, and future. I wrote about the community in a pretty abstract way but the other two parts focused on two representative things: Big Problems courses for learning and Computational Neuroscience for future. It’s ok.
[] Extended Chicago Essay: I wrote “How did you get caught” about how I how was caught in confirmation bias while listening to Christian Radio (it’s not really controversial, though it sounds like it on the surface). I like it fine but people I’ve shown it to generally have higher opinions of it.

if you want to know my stats check MIT/Caltech forum.

I am going to Caltech anyway. But I really love UChicago, and everthing about UChicago. So this rejection broke my heart.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 790 M, 800 R, 760 W
[] SAT II (if submitted): 800 on Chinese, Math II, Biology-M, Chemistry, and US History
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Grades in AP/IB/honors classes: all A’s in 10 AP classes in total
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn’t rank, but top 1%
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): 5’s on everything: US history, chemistry, biology, calculus B/C, Chinese, English Language & Composition.
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP English Literature, American Experience (seminar elective class), AP Art History, advanced journalism, AP Political Science, AP Economics, AP Statistics
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Semifinalist, AP Scholar with Distinction, lots of school end-of-the-year awards for mostly science and English, some random debate awards.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership and number of years participated in a certain activity in parenthesis): Speech and Debate (co-captain), newspaper (layout editor), Chinese Cultural Club (vice-president), MUN for 2 years but quit, piano for 8 years
[] Job/Work Experience: Worked at Hollister from November to February.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteered around 40 hours for United Way fundraising, volunteered some other small stuff that didn’t really matter.
[] EC short answer (subject and personal opinions on it): On my experiences with and love for debate. Pretty passionate.
[] Common App Essay (subject and personal opinions on it): On my eighth grade teacher and her influence on me. It was pretty good.
[] Optional Favorite Things Essay (subject and personal opinions on it): Listed a bunch of favorite books, movies, tv shows, etc.
[] Why Chicago (details in the essay and personal opinions on it): Pretty generic, about why I loved Chicago so much, but I think I was true to myself.
[] Extended Chicago Essay (subject - if you want, include essay prompt if you did #5 - and personal opinions on it): Did the one on games and talked about why I think games are so addicting from an evolutionary psychology analysis.
[] Interview: Probably the best out of all my interviews.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Three Areas of Interest Listed: Philosophy, biology, pre-med.
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] School Type: Public - really competitive
[] Ethnicity: Asian American
[] Gender: Male
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): First generation immigrant? But that’s not too uncommon with Asian Americans.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Great grades and scores, good essays and recs, well-rounded and intelligent (?).
[] Weaknesses: Didn’t really do many EC’s till junior year. Also, jumped around a lot in terms of EC’s. I tried out a bunch of activities, found out I didn’t like them, and quit. I don’t really regret it personally since I regard it as simply pursuing my interests, but I’m not sure whether colleges may think I’m inconsistent for doing that.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: See strengths. Also, I really loved Chicago and I think that came through. I’m pretty intellectual and therefore I’d say a good fit for the college.
[/ul]

ACCEPTED!!! I’ll be posting my stats soon :D

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): Didn’t submit, but it was 680M 800CR 800W
[] ACT: 34
[] SAT II (if submitted): Didn’t submit them, but 750 US History and 800 Literature
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.82
[] Grades in AP/IB/honors classes (if applicable) 4.3 weighted GPA
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn’t rank
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): APUSH (5), AP Euro (5), AP Lang (5), AP Lit (5), AP US Gov. (5), AP Microeconomics (4)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis):N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc, AP Chem, AP Psych, AP Macroeconomics, AP French, Honors Japanese 4, Honors Anatomy and Physiology, gym
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Finalist, AP Scholar w/ Honors, various debate awards at state and national level, though nothing that fancy. If these mean anything to any debaters out there though: my best awards are semifinalist at the Glenbrooks and 6th in Congress at my state tournament.

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership and number of years participated in a certain activity in parenthesis): Forensics (4 years, captain of Congressional Debate), Garden Club (President/Founder, 2 years), Quiz Bowl (3 years), National Honor Society (2 years), Academic Decathlon (Topic Discussion Leader; 1 year)
[] Job/Work Experience: Private Japanese Language Tutor, 1 year
[] Volunteer/Community service: EASILY over 250 hours and I made a huge fuss about it.
I listed different projects separately and noted the leadership positions I had within them. For example, I founded a community garden with a local girl’s shelter and helped maintain it for a summer, called myself project manager; I put together a video to commemorate 100,000 hours of service completed by students at my school and called myself the director, and so on. I also did a habitat for humanity build, not to mention an hour or two here and there at various places to meet school requirements. I even included an extra sheet, about half a page, on the garden.
[] EC short answer (subject and personal opinions on it): Wrote about debate, how I enjoyed being able to discuss world issues with informed people.
[] Common App Essay (subject and personal opinions on it): About my Habitat for Humanity build, but the focus was on the personal growth I underwent. I wrote about how I basically sucked at building houses and ended up sandpapering walls, but eventually realized my contributions were valuable as well. Honestly, it’s decent but not phenomenal.
[] Optional Favorite Things Essay (subject and personal opinions on it): I wrote two paragraphs, like they said, one on my favorite books and one on my favorite movies. Nothing fancy.
[] Why Chicago (details in the essay and personal opinions on it): I talked about their reputation as intensely intellectual and how I was drawn to that, and I mentioned their linguistics program.
[] Extended Chicago Essay (subject - if you want, include essay prompt if you did #5 - and personal opinions on it): Essay prompt #2 (what you’ve outgrown/what replaced it), and easily the best one I wrote. When I was 7/8ish, I tried to teach myself Elvish - yeah I know - so I wrote about how my childhood love for far-off places and culture developed into a current love of learning languages.
[] Teacher Recommendation (only if you saw it): I only saw my English teacher (AP Lit), but it was excellent, said I was one of the most creative and intellectually well-rounded students he’d ever taught.
[] Counselor Rec (only if you saw it): Didn’t see.
[] Additional Rec (only if you saw it): N/A
[] Interview: I think this might have been what got me in, to be honest. My interview went on for over an hour, and at the end of it my interviewer said that I was the most well-prepared person that he had ever interviewed for anything.

[] State (if domestic applicant): Iowa
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Small/Medium Public (1000 kids)
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: Female
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): I made sure to emphasize my love for languages and serving the community, but nothing that striking.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Volunteer work, extended essay, interview
[] Weaknesses: My record in math and science is a bit sketchy
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: The strengths I listed above. [/li][/ul]General Comments: I’ve lurked College Confidential for school stats ever since I was a freshman so I thought I’d contribute to the paranoia of next year’s applicants :stuck_out_tongue: No, but really, I think that this proves that there is hope for people without an amazing hook to get into a tough college in a tough year. I also applied to Columbia ED, Yale, UPenn, NYU, Barnard, Reed, University of Michigan and University of Iowa. I’m officially accepted at Iowa and I got the ‘make plans for events for accepted students at NYU’ email. I was deferred from Columbia, and I’m still waiting to hear form everywhere else. Barring acceptance to Columbia, I’m attending Chicago - though if by some stroke of insanity I do get into Yale I know my parents will pressure me to go there. Anyways, congrats to all the other accepted people and even if you didn’t get in, there is an awesome school waiting out there for you.

Decision: Deferred –> Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 730 CR, 720 M = 1450. 800 on W (not counted) yielding to a 2250
[] SAT II (if submitted): 740 Math I, 690 US History
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.723
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 51/189, 27%
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): APUSH: 5, AP Lang: 5, AP Chem: 3, AP Macroeconomics: Expecting 5, AP Gov: Expecting 5, AP Physics: Expecting 3 or a miraculous 4, AP Cal AB: Expecting 5, AP Lit: Expecting 4 or 5
[] Senior Year Course Load: Business Information Systems, AP Literature, Advanced Health Science, AP Cal, Art, AP Eco/Gov, AP Physics
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Eagle Scout Award
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership and number of years participated in a certain activity in parenthesis): Boy Scouts for 9 years. Karate for 9 years, leading to Black Belt.
[] Volunteer/Community service: 130 hours at Methodist Hospital
[] EC short answer (subject and personal opinions on it):
[] Common App Essay (subject and personal opinions on it): The effect of a particular line by Johnny Depp’s character in the movie Blow on my artistic perspective. “May the wind forever be upon your back, and the sun on your face. May the wings of destiny carry you aloft to dance with the stars.” Really passionate and a wonderful essay.
[] Optional Favorite Things Essay (subject and personal opinions on it): The effect of the 1963 Buddhist Crisis and some monk who set himself afire on me. It really changed my outlook on humanity. I submitted this same essay for Scholastic Writing, and won Gold, so I guess it was really good.
[] Why Chicago (details in the essay and personal opinions on it): Freaking brilliant essay on why I love Chicago, describing the intellectualism and how I would join the Photography Club and the Zombie Invasion Club. And more stuff.
[] Extended Chicago Essay (subject - if you want, include essay prompt if you did #5 - and personal opinions on it): “How did you get caught?” I wrote a very poetic, yet abstract, piece of me at the base of a mountain, the sun above piercing the edge to impact a horizon out of my reach. And I remain at the foot of the mountain, seeking to bathe in the sunlight. Then it goes through my entire past, briefly, and talks about how I got there, and where I seek to go next. One of my best essays.
[] Any additional essays? After getting deferred, I sent in another essay that described the duality of culture in which I’ve grown. THE best essay I’ve ever written. It was a pleasure writing it. I’m positive this is what kept me from not getting rejected. I also sent in a letter of continued interest.
[] Teacher Recommendation (only if you saw it): One from APUSH teacher, who wrote a glowing letter describing me as an absolute gem to teach. Another from my Physics teacher, which was absolutely horrible and did not help at all.
[] Counselor Rec (only if you saw it): Average, I guess.
[] Additional Rec (only if you saw it): After getting deferred, sent in another from my AP Macroeco teacher, who wrote another glowing rec describing me as one of the best student he’s ever taught in his 20 years of teaching (and it was genuine too).
[] Interview: Didn’t do it for some reason. I forget why. I know - stupid. Should have…

[] Gender: Male
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): None
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: My essays were amazing. My SAT wasn’t too shabby either.
[] Weaknesses: GPA and Rank… sigh
[li] Why you think you were waitlisted? My freshman year, I didn’t know how important grades were. Same for sophomore year. If I knew then, I would have a much better GPA and would probably be in. Oh well. Life goes on.[/li][/ul]

waitlisted. meh

Congrats everyone! I’m a current first-year and I can honestly say that UChicago is an exciting and (sometimes) magical place - you’ll meet some of the most amazing people here and be surrounded by kids who want to (and can) change the world. You should all be very proud!

I was waitlisted…and I’m pretty content with that decision, because I don’t know enough about UChicago to love it yet.

Decision: Rejected

ACCEPTED. I will be sure to post my stats later…

Holy cr*p! What is wrong with UChicago this year! This is the first year I have seen this many waitlists and rejections… UChicago why? Why? Why? Why? Why?

[] Job/Work Experience: Basketball ref, since 7th grade
[] Volunteer/Community service: 180 hours as a camp counselor, 24 as a campaign volunteer, 1 semester-worth of work in my school during lunch

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I thought my EC’s were kinda strong-ish and I loved some of my essays though obviously they aren’t loved that much
[] Weaknesses: GPA/Class rank, Schedule Strength, The fact that my regional AO thought I was an idiot
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My low GPA and my bad relations with my regional admissions rep. Also, I might have sent a bit too many supplemental papers and some of them may have had flaws even though I clearly stated that my purpose of writing them was not for correctness but rather for intellectual exploration and that I thought that they adequately represented my rational capabilities. Also, my EA application was so weakly constructed relative to my RD applications so that may have been a contributing factor.
[/ul]General Comments: Well, I guess I just have to wait for Harvard, Yale, and Duke and pray that I have some good luck with them…Though I have a feeling that I’m going to go to Pitt regardless. Anyways, congrats to those accepted. And, life goes on.
